    , Article Proceedings of 2016 7th International Conference on Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, ICMAE 2016, 18 July 2016 through 20 July 2016 ; 2016 , Pages 394-399 ; 9781467388290 (ISBN) Mohammadkarimi, H ; Nobahari, H ; Sharifi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel algorithm for correcting the error of attitude in inertial navigation systems is introduced. Since the oftenly used differential equations of the navigation errors show the small rotation angles instead of the error of Euler angles, the nonlinear equation between the small rotation angles and the error of Euler angles, are derived. To obtain an approximative solution for the derived equations, third order multiplication of the small rotation angles are ignored and error of Euler angles are expressed explicitly as functions of the Euler angles and the small rotation angles. Based on the obtained solution, a new algorithm for attitude correction in inertial navigation is...

Simulation of wave generated by landslides in Maku dam reservoir

, Article Prediction and Simulation Methods for Geohazard Mitigation - Proceedings of the International Symposium on Prediction and Simulation Methods for Geohazard Mitigation, IS-KYOTO 2009, 25 May 2009 through 27 May 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 91-96 ; 9780415804820 (ISBN) Yavari Ramshe, S ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, impulsive wave generation and propagation generated by landslides are studied numerically for a real case. Maku dam reservoir, in the northwestern of Iran is considered as the case study. Generated wave heights, wave run-up, maximum wave height above the dam crest and the probable overtopping volume have been evaluated, using a two-dimensional numerical model (LS3D). This model is validated using available three-dimensional experimental data for simulating impulsive wave caused by sub-aerial landslides. Based on the results, the generated wave height for first and second scenarios are 12 m and 18 m respectively. The wave height of 8 m is observed close to dam body. Because of...

Mechanism analysis of steel frames considering moment–shear interaction

    , Article Advances in Structural Engineering ; 2018 ; 13694332 (ISSN) Kazemi, M. T ; Sharifi, M ; Yang, J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Considering the interaction of flexural moment and shear force in the steel frames with haunch or intermediate beam length and eccentrically braced frames with intermediate link length is a major concern of the structural analysis and design. This article contains two stages. In the first stage, to investigate the moment–shear interaction for the highly ductile steel I-sections, a study is carried out using finite element analysis and a simple and practical relationship is developed. In the second stage, a simple approach based on virtual work method for assemblage of interconnected rigid bodies is employed to consider collapse mechanisms with mixed hinges. Using this approach, the...

Optimal placement of PMUs to maintain network observability using a modified BPSO algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 33, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 28-34 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Hajian, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Amraee, T ; Mozafari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach to optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) for state estimation. At first, an optimal measurement set is determined to achieve full network observability during normal conditions, i.e. no PMU failure or transmission line outage. Then, in order to consider contingency conditions, the derived scheme in normal conditions is modified to maintain network observability after any PMU loss or a single transmission line outage. Observability analysis is carried out using topological observability rules. A new rule is added that can decrease the number of required PMUs for complete system observability. A modified Binary Particle Swarm Optimization...

A complementary method for preventing hidden neurons' saturation in feed forward neural networks training

    , Article Iranian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering ; Volume 9, Issue 2 , SUMMER-FALL , 2010 , Pages 127-133 ; 16820053 (ISSN) Moallem, P ; Ayoughi, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In feed forward neural networks, hidden layer neurons' saturation conditions, which are the cause of flat spots on the error surface, is one of the main disadvantages of any conventional gradient descent learning algorithm. In this paper, we propose a novel complementary scheme for the learning based on a suitable combination of anti saturated hidden neurons learning process and accelerating methods like the momentum term and the parallel tangent technique. In our proposed method, a normalized saturation criterion (NSC) of hidden neurons, which is introduced in this paper, is monitored during learning process. When the NSC is higher than a specified threshold, it means that the algorithm...

Identification, prediction and detection of the process fault in a cement rotary kiln by locally linear neuro-fuzzy technique

    , Article 2009 International Conference on Computer and Electrical Engineering, ICCEE 2009, 28 December 2009 through 30 December 2009 ; Volume 1 , 2009 , Pages 174-178 ; 9780769539256 (ISBN) Sadeghian, M ; Fatehi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we use nonlinear system identification method to predict and detect process fault of a cement rotary kiln. After selecting proper inputs and output, an input-output model is identified for the plant. To identify the various operation points in the kiln, Locally Linear Neuro-Fuzzy (LLNF) model is used. This model is trained by LOLIMOT algorithm which is an incremental tree-structure algorithm. Then, by using this method, we obtained 3 distinct models for the normal and faulty situations in the kiln. One of the models is for normal condition of the kiln with 15 minutes prediction horizon. The other two models are for the two faulty situations in the kiln with 7 minutes...

Optimal reactive power dispatch using the concept of dynamic VAR source value

    , Article 2009 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, PES '09, 26 July 2009 through 30 July 2009, Calgary, AB ; 2009 ; 9781424442416 (ISBN) Rabiee, A ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Voltage stability is the ability of a power system to maintain acceptable voltages at all buses in the system under normal conditions and after being subjected to a disturbance. This paper employs the management of reactive power generation to improve the voltage stability margin (VSM), in the framework of optimal reactive power dispatch (ORD) problem. Scheduling of VAR sources is performed using the concept of relative value of VAR sources. The proposed methodology has been tested on the IEEE 14-bus test system. Simulation results show that after the optimal reactive power scheduling, VSM of the systems is increased considerably. In addition, it is observed that reactive power reserve is...
