    Abstract
In this paper, the numerical results of hydrodynamic modeling of primary settling tanks are presented. The flow field is assumed to be incompressible and non-buoyant. The effects of two different types of turbulence model, standard κ - ε and RNG, are compared with each other. The effects of an inlet baffle on the hydrodynamics of settling tanks are also studied. Results are obtained for the primary settling tank of the city of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. The effects of the existence and position of another interior baffle in the settling tanks are also studied. Results in the different parts are compared with experimental and numerical data and showed good agreement. Comparison between two...

Sustainable transport indicators: Definition and integration

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Science and Technology ; Volume 2, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 83-96 ; 17351472 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a different interpretation of sustainable transportation, is introduced, in which sustainability with respect to transportation sector for the selected countries is evaluated. This interpretation characterizes "sustainable development" through "harmonic development". It means sustainable development with special focus on transportation can be measured by the degree of conformity between environment, economy, and social aspects on one hand, and transportation on the other hand. The best indicator to perform such a measurement is elasticity. The database used for the study encompasses a series of national indicators for each country Seventy nine countries were initially selected...

    Countries’ classification by environmental resilience

    , Article Journal of Environmental Management ; Volume 230 , 2019 , Pages 345-354 ; 03014797 (ISSN) Moghim, S ; Garna, R. K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization affect countries’ vulnerability to future disasters. This study investigates the vulnerability of 141 countries to natural and anthropogenic hazards using six environmental indicators including air pollution, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, access to drinking water, access to improved sanitation, environmental risks (total death and affected people), and energy use. Results confirm that the resilience varies by the location. Furthermore, this work delineates the World countries using the environmental resilience score. The most resilient countries are located in Europe and North America and the least resilient countries are in...

    Abstract
Background: The burden of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rising globally, with substantial variation in levels and trends of disease in different countries and regions. Understanding these geographical differences is crucial for formulating effective strategies for preventing and treating IBD. We report the prevalence, mortality, and overall burden of IBD in 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017, based on data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017. Methods: We modelled mortality due to IBD using a standard Cause of Death Ensemble model including data mainly from vital registrations. To estimate the non-fatal burden, we used data...

    Abstract
Background: Data about the global, regional, and country-specific variations in the levels and trends of colorectal cancer are required to understand the impact of this disease and the trends in its burden to help policy makers allocate resources. Here we provide a status report on the incidence, mortality, and disability caused by colorectal cancer in 195 countries and territories between 1990 and 2017. Methods: Vital registration, sample vital registration, verbal autopsy, and cancer registry data were used to generate incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life-year (DALY) estimates of colorectal cancer at the global, regional, and national levels. We also determined the association...
