Size-dependent energy release rate formulation of notched beams based on a modified couple stress theory

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Vol. 116, Issue.1 , 2014 , pp. 80-91 ; ISSN: 0013-7944 Sherafatnia, K ; Kahrobaiyan, M. H ; Farrahi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The modified couple stress theory is employed in this paper in order to formulate the size-dependent strain energy release rate of Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko notched beams. As a case study, the normalized energy release rate of the aforementioned beams has been developed for three-point bending as a function of the ratio of material length scale parameter to the beam depth. The results of the current model are compared to the experimental data. The good agreement between the present results and the experimental values indicates that the current model can be successfully applied to evaluate size dependent energy release rate of structures

Experimental Study on Flexural Strength of Notched Fiber Reinforced Concrete Beam

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fartash, Ali (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The benefits of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) have been thoroughly investigated. Much of this work has focused on polypropylene FRC notched beams. Data on the bending behavior of beams with side notch is scarce. A pilot investigation on the compressive behavior of macro-synthetic FRC and on the splitting tensile strength of FRC was carried out. Twenty beam specimens with two different strength of 35 and 60 MPa was tested. The beams dimensions were 15*15*55 centimeter and they were notched at the bottom at mid and side span. Two different notch depth of 5 and 7.5 centimeter was implemented. At the end it was found out addition of fiber decreases compressive strength of 35 Mega Pascal...

    Abstract
An investigation into the mixed mode fracture of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams with one percent volume fraction of steel fiber is presented. A series of notched beams with different notch depths and locations are tested under three-point bending. The test results for apparent fracture toughness, crack trajectories, and fracture energy are presented. The crack paths for SFRC and plain concrete beams are compared. The apparent fracture toughness values were more scattered for SFRC than for plain concrete. The load-deflection curves were used to obtain the fracture energy. To this end, two methods were utilized for center notched beams, and the results were comparable to each...

Investigating the effect of heat treatment on the fracture toughness of a hot extruded Al–Ti composite produced by powder metallurgy route

    Abstract
An Al-5 wt% Ti composite was fabricated via powder metallurgy technique and hot extrusion. The produced composite samples were heat-treated subsequently at 600 °C for various time durations of 0, 4 and 10 h to achieve different volume fractions of the intermetallic Al3Ti phase. Pure aluminum sample was produced as a benchmark specimen to be compared to the composite samples. SEM studies were used to investigate the microstructure of the composite samples, and it was revealed that core-shell structured particles were formed in the composite heat-treated for 4 h. Triple point bending test was performed on the single edge notched beam specimens of the heat-treated Al-5 wt% Ti composite and the...

On the fracture toughness behavior of in-situ Al-Ti composites produced via mechanical alloying and hot extrusion

    Abstract
Mechanical alloying and hot extrusion techniques were employed to produce in-situ fully dens Al-Ti composites without applying any heat treatment. The focus of this study is the investigation of fracture toughness in produced composites in order to improve it and to explain the mechanisms responsible for the fracture. The morphology of milled powders was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The microstructure of the extruded composites was examined by Optical Microscopy (OM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). Moreover, the density and hardness of samples were investigated. Three point bending test of the single edge notched beam (SENB) samples was applied to...
