Numerical and experimental study on the optimization of overload parameters for the increase of fatigue life

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Vol. 35, issue. 1 , May , 2014 , p. 80-86 Sarkheil, S ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Fatigue life and crack growth retardation due to periodic tensile overloads, which are superposed on constant amplitude cycles, have been investigated in the present study. In the numerical analyses, the Walker equation with the generalized Willenborg model has been used. The analyses and experiments have been performed on C(T) specimens made of 7075 aluminium. The periodic overloads have been induced at two different periodicities and the effect of overload ratio and overload periodicity on the fatigue life has been studied. The results of the experiments and analyses reveal that the normalized fatigue life versus overload ratio curve has a maximum point, which indicates that there are...

Efficient batch-mode mixing and flow patterns in a microfluidic centrifugal platform: a numerical and experimental study

    , Article Microsystem Technologies ; 2016 , Pages 1-13 ; 09467076 (ISSN) Mortazavi, S. M. A ; Tirandazi, P ; Normandie, M ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
During recent years centrifugal-based microfluidic devices known as Lab-on-a-CD have attracted a lot of attentions. Applications of these CD-based platforms are ubiquitous in numerous biological analyses and chemical syntheses. Mixing of different species in microscale is one of the essential operations in biochemical applications where this seemingly simple task remains a major obstruction. Application of centrifugal force, however, may significantly improve the flow agitation and mixing, especially when it is combined with the Coriolis force which acts perpendicular to centrifugal force. In this study, mixing process in minichambers located on a rotating platform under a periodic...

A comprehensive experimental and numerical study on redistribution of residual stresses by shot peening

    Abstract
Shot peening is one of the most effective surface strengthening treatment technologies in which compressive residual stresses are induced beneath the specimen surface. Effects of various factors on the distribution of residual stress profile induced by shot peening have been investigated by many researchers. However, initial residual stresses are one of the important factors which affect the shot peening residual stress. This study is aimed to present comprehensive numerical and experimental study on the effect of initial residual stresses on the shot peened specimen. Initial residual stresses were induced using a four-point bending rig and grinding. Incremental center hole drilling (ICHD)...

Improving the hysteretic behavior of Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF) by a proposed shear damper

    , Article Steel and Composite Structures ; Volume 30, Issue 4 , 2019 , Pages 383-392 ; 12299367 (ISSN) Ghamari, A ; Haeri, H ; Khaloo, A ; Zhu, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Passive steel dampers have shown favorable performance in last earthquakes, numerical and experimental studies. Although steel dampers are more affordable than other types of damper, they are not economically justified for ordinary buildings. Therefore, in this paper, an innovative steel damper with shear yielding mechanism is introduced, which is easy to fabricate also can be easily replaced after sever earthquakes. The main goal of implementing such a mechanism is to control the possible damage in the damper and to ensure the elastic behavior of other structural components. The numerical results indicate an enhancement of the hysteretic behavior of the concentrically braced frames...

    Abstract
The analytical study of microchannels has been considered as a preliminary approach to alleviate the difficulties which are normally encountered in numerical and experimental studies. Among the analytical solutions, those with high robustness and low complexities are certainly more attractive. In this work, we present a theoretical approach to predict the temperature field in micro-Poiseuille channel flow with constant wall temperature. The use of power series method simplifies the solution in the current analytical approach. The current analytical derivations are examined for channels with both hot-wall and cold-wall conditions. The current solutions agree well with the numerical solutions...

Numerical and experimental study of a jet impinging with axial symmetry with a set of heat exchanger tubes

    , Article Mechanics and Industry ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , 2018 ; 22577777 (ISSN) Jamalei, E ; Alayi, R ; Kasaeian, A ; Kasaeian, F ; Ahmadi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to predict the flow field of impinging turbulent jet with cylinder in a 3-d state. Nowadays, shear stress has multiple uses in the industry. The study has been conducted in both compressible and incompressible states with output velocities between 100 and 150 m/s, in different eccentricities of jet with respect to the first cylinder, and in various nozzle outlet orifice distances from front edge of the first cylinder. Pressure distribution and shear stress on cylinder surfaces have been determined and efficiency of jet in cleaning the heat exchangers pipes has been analyzed. Also, an experimental investigation has been conducted in order to verify the...

Numerical and experimental study on dynamic responsemitigation of tension leg platform using tuned mass damper

    , Article Journal of Ship Research ; Volume 66, Issue 4 , 2022 , Pages 265-276 ; 00224502 (ISSN) Tabeshpour, M. R ; Nikmehr, L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Responseamplitudemitigationof theoffshorestructures like tensionlegplatform(TLP) is important since these structures are always exposed to environmental loads such as waves, andin thecaseofTLP, reduction in responseamplitudeofplatformcauses reduction in stress range in tendons; thiswould increase the fatigue life of tendons, and therefore, increases the structural safety. Also providing stable conditions for machinery and crew increases the efficiency and functionality of the platform. This article thus aims to investigate the possibility and effectiveness of applying tuned mass damper (TMD) as a passive structural control systemto suppress the surgemotion of TLP that is exposed to wave...
