    Abstract
One of the main challenges of hybrid simulation is developing integration methods that not only provide accurate and stable results but also are compatible with the hybrid simulation circumstances. This paper presents a novel enhanced integration technique for hybrid simulation termed “modified operator splitting” (MOS) method. The main aim of the MOS technique is to improve the precision of the operator splitting (OS) method by reducing the corrector step length, where initial stiffness is utilized instead of actual stiffness. For this purpose, a new algorithm is proposed, which makes a more precise estimation of the predictor displacement; thus minimizes the effect of the corrective...

    Abstract
Hybrid simulation is a powerful test method for evaluating the seismic performance of structural systems. This method makes it feasible that only critical components of a structure be experimentally tested. This paper presents a newly proposed integration algorithm for seismic hybrid simulation which is aimed to extend its capabilities to a wide range of systems where existing methods encounter some limitations. In the proposed method, which is termed the variable time step (VTS) integration method, an implicit scheme is employed for hybrid simulation by eliminating the iterative phase on experimental element, the phase which is necessary in regular implicit applications. In order to study...

    Mullins-Herring Equation with Lateral Growth

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghamari, Danial (Author) ; Moghimi Araghi, Saman (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Surface growth have been one of the most interesting topics of research in non-equilibrium Statistical physics, due to their relevance in studying industrial growth processes. Many models such as Edwards-Wilkinson and KPZ have been proposed to study these systems where by incorporating renormalization group, numerical integration and computer simulations we can derive their critical exponents. In general, a thermal noise is implemented in these models, however, other types can be used as well. In particular for the case of Edwards-Wilkinson, it has been shown that a multiplicative noise changes the universality class of the model. In this thesis we want to investigate the effects of...

    Abstract
The nonlinear aeroelastic behavior of a three-dimensional general laminated composite plate at high supersonic Mach numbers is investigated using von Karman's large deflection plate theory and quasisteady aerodynamic theory. Galerkin's method is used to reduce the governing equations to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations in time, which are then solved by a direct numerical integration method. Nonlinear flutter results are presented with the effects of in-plane force, static pressure differential, fiber orientation and aerodynamic damping

Assessment of Existing Offshore Platforms for In-Place Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bassamzadeh, Nastaran Sadat (Author) ; Golafshani, Ali Akbar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Assessment of existing jacket type offshore platforms in Persian Gulf for life extension is of great importance in the field of offshore platforms in recent years. The main question to answer is whether an existing platform is safe enough to be used beyond the design life. Evaluation of existing jacket type offshore platforms under extreme environmental (wave) loading in Persian Gulf is a part of this major assessment. Two general approaches exist in this context, deterministic and probabilistic assessment. In this thesis, a new probabilistic method (reliability analysis) to assess offshore structures under environmental loading (extreme wave) is introduced. This method is a...

Thermo-Mechanical Behavior of Shape Memory Alloys Under Multiaxial Loadings: Constitutive Modeling and Numerical Implementation at Small and Finite Strains

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Arghavani Hadi, Jamal (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are a type of smart materials which have unique features known as pseudo-elasticity, one-way and two-way shape memory eects. The interest in the mechanical behavior of SMAs is rapidly growing with the increasing number of potential industrial applications. The origin of SMA material features is a reversible thermo-elastic martensitic phase transformation between a high symmetry, austenitic phase and a low symmetry, martensitic phase. In most applications, SMAs experience general non-proportional thermo-mechanical loads. Thus, according to experimental observations, the so-called variant reorientation should be considered in the constitutive model development....

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Baghani, Mostafa (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Arghavani, Jamal (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a class of multi-phase smart materials that have the ability to return from a deformed to their original shape . The origin of SMP material features is a reversible glassy-rubbery phase transformation between a high stiffness glassy phase and a low stiffness rubbery phase . Thus , according to experimental observations , the phase transformation must be considered in the constitutive model development . In most applications , SMPs experience arbitrary thermo-mechanical loadings . Moreover , SMP structures typically undergo large rotations and strains and the use of a finite deformation scheme is preferred. In this thesis , we study the SMP behavior under...

On the contact mechanics of a rolling cylinder on a graded coating. Part 1: Analytical formulation

    , Article Mechanics of Materials ; Vol. 68, issue , 2014 , p. 207-216 Alinia, Y ; Guler, M. A ; Adibnazari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the fully coupled rolling contact problem of a graded coating/substrate system under the action of a rigid cylinder is investigated. Using the singular integral equation approach, the governing equations of the rolling contact problem are constructed for all possible stick/slip regimes. Applying the Gauss-Chebyshev numerical integration method, the governing equations are converted to systems of algebraic equations. A new numerical algorithm is proposed to solve these systems of equations. Both the coupled and the uncoupled solutions to the problem are found through an implemented iterative procedure. In Part I of this paper, the analytical formulation of the rolling contact...

The Gaussian expansion of the Green's function of an electric current in a parallel-plate waveguide

    , Article 2008 IEEE International RF and Microwave Conference, RFM 2008, Kuala Lumpur, 2 December 2008 through 4 December 2008 ; April , 2008 , Pages 46-48 ; 9781424428663 (ISBN) Tajdini, M. M ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, a novel closed form expression is derived to find the Green's function of a horizontal electric current in a parallel-plate waveguide. It is achieved by expanding the Green's function into a series of Gaussian functions. This new method is called the Gaussian Green's function (GGF) method. The main advantage of the GGF method lies in its precision as well as rapid convergence. Numerical results confirm that the closed form expression yields less than 0.2% error compared to the numerical integration of the spectral integral. Furthermore, it is verified that this method can be in excellent agreement with the complex images (CI) method. © 2008 IEEE

Employing Enriched Meshfree MLSRK Method to Analyze 2D Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics Problems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Namakian, Reza (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The so-called moving least square reproducing kernel method (MLSRKM), which is a meshfree Galerkin method, has two special properties in comparison with its prior version, say moving least square method (MLSM): (i) stability in preserving completeness conditions to the desired order for a discrete reproducing formula due to implementation of shifted and scaled basis, (ii) use of more accurate quadrature weights in a discrete reproducing form, especially along boundaries. However, because of employing shifted basis in MLSRKM, some of enrichment techniques, specifically in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) problems, cannot be applied to this method. Therefore, we are...

Introducing structural approximation method for modeling nanostructures

    , Article Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience ; Vol. 7, Issue 2 , 2010 , p. 423-428 ; ISSN: 15461955 Momeni, K ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work a new method for analyzing nanostructured materials has been proposed to accelerate the simulations for solid crystalline materials. The proposed Structural Approximation Method (SAM) is based on Molecular Dynamics (MD) and the accuracy of the results can also be improved in a systematic manner by sacrificing the simulation speed. In this method a virtual material is used instead of the real one, which has less number of atoms and therefore fewer degrees of freedom, compared to the real material. The number of differential equations that must be integrated in order to specify the state of the system will decrease significantly, and the simulation speed increases. To generalize...

An efficient closed-form derivation of spatial green's function for finite dielectric structures using characteristic green's function-rational function fitting method

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation ; Vol. 62, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 1282-1292 ; ISSN: 0018926X Torabi, A ; Shishegar, A. A ; Faraji-Dana, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A uniform and closed-form spatial Green's function for finite dielectric structures is derived by using a combination of the characteristic Green's function (CGF) and rational function fitting method (RFFM). Employing the concept of quasi leaky waves, CGF-RFFM represents both of the discrete and continuous spectrum contributions efficiently by using the modified VECTFIT algorithm. The method is examined for 2-D truncated dielectric slab while it can be implemented for 3-D structure straightforwardly. An error of less than 0.2% is achieved compared with the direct numerical integration of the spectral integral. The derived Green's function is exact for separable structures while it is...

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science ; Volume 225, Issue 9 , 2011 , Pages 2044-2051 ; 09544062 (ISSN) Eigoli, A. K ; Vossoughi, G. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Among the locomotion concepts employed in the microrobotics, friction-based locomotion principles are of considerable importance. In this study, the dynamic modelling of friction drive microrobots subjected to the tangential and normal excitations is investigated, which have the same frequency, but are shifted in phase. The motion equation of the microrobot reveals a strongly non-linear differential equation with discontinuity for which the elastic force term is proportional to a signum function. Using the homotopy perturbation method, simple expressions are derived for predicting average velocity of the slider. The obtained results are in good agreement with those achieved from numerical...

    2011
    Abstract
A fully implicit iterative integration procedure is presented for local and geographically distributed hybrid simulation of the seismic response of complex structural systems with distributed nonlinear behavior. The purpose of this procedure is to seamlessly incorporate experimental elements in simulations using existing fully implicit integration algorithms designed for pure numerical simulations. The difficulties of implementing implicit integrators in a hybrid simulation are addressed at the element level by introducing a safe iteration strategy and using an efficient procedure for online estimation of the experimental tangent stiffness matrix. In order to avoid physical application of...

    Abstract
The friction drive principle, which is based on the superposition of two synchronized perpendicular vibrations at the interface of the robot and the work floor, plays a fundamental role in the locomotion of miniaturized robots. In this paper, the iteration perturbation method proposed by He is used to generate a periodic solution for this type of friction drive microrobot. The equation of motion for the system reveals a parametrically excited oscillator with discontinuity, the elastic force term for which is proportional to a signum function. The obtained solutions are in excellent agreement with those achieved from numerical integration and experiments reported in the literature. Results...

Gauss integration limits in nearly singular integrals of BEM for geometrically linear elements

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 4 B , August , 2010 , Pages 285-300 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Abbaspour, M ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The most suitable and widely used numerical integration method for boundary integrals in the BEM method is Gauss-Legendre integration. But, this integration method is not appropriate for singular and nearly singular integrations in BEM. In this study, some criteria are introduced for recognizing nearly singular integrals in the integral form of the Laplace equation. At the first stage, a criterion is obtained for the constant element and, at the later stages, higher order elements are investigated. In the present research, the Romberg integration method is used for nearly singular integrals. The results of this numerical method have good agreement with analytical integration. The singular...

    Abstract
A novel closed form expression is derived for spatial Green's functions of microstrip structures by expanding the spectral Green's function into a Gaussian series. This innovative method is called the Gaussian Green's function (GGF) method due to the Gaussian form in the closed form Green's function representation. The main advantage of the GGF method lies in its precision as well as rapid convergence. To demonstrate the versatility of this method, the current distribution of a microstrip antenna is achieved via the combination of the method of moments (MoM) and GGF method. It is shown that this method can be computationally very efficient with less than 1% error compared to the numerical...
