    Abstract
Various morphologies of CuO/Cu(OH)2 nanostructures with different adsorbed -OH contents were synthesized on an acid-treated Cu foil through variation of NaOH concentration from 0 to 50 mM with an in situ oxidation method. X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated formation of CuO on the Cu(OH)2 crystalline phase at a growth temperature of 60°C for 20 h. Antibacterial activity of the nanostructures against Escherichia coli bacteria was studied in the dark and under light irradiation. The nanostructures grown at a NaOH concentration of 30 mM showed the highest surface area and the strongest antibacterial activity among the samples. After elimination of the...

Photocatalytic reduction of graphene oxides hybridized by ZnO nanoparticles in ethanol

    , Article Carbon ; Volume 49, Issue 1 , January , 2011 , Pages 11-18 ; 00086223 (ISSN) Akhavan, O ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Graphene oxide platelets synthesized by using a chemical exfoliation method were dispersed in a suspension of ZnO nanoparticles to fabricate ZnO/graphene oxide composite. Formation of graphene oxide platelets (with average thickness of ∼0.8 nm) hybridized by ZnO nanoparticles (with average diameter of ∼20 nm) was investigated. The 2D band in Raman spectrum confirmed formation of single-layer graphene oxides. The gradual photocatalytic reduction of the graphene oxide sheets in the ZnO/graphene oxide suspension of ethanol was studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for different ultra violet (UV)-visible irradiation times. After 2 h irradiation, the relative concentration of the...

Hydrogen sensing properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube films sputtered by Pd

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 35, Issue 9 , 2010 , Pages 4445-4449 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Ghasempour, R ; Mortazavi, S. Z ; Iraji zad, A ; Rahimi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multi-Walled Carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) films were obtained by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition method and coated by palladium sputtering process. Raman spectroscopy was used to study alteration in quality of the carbon nanotubes after the sputtering process. Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that hydrogenation process can reduce the C{double bond, long}O to C-O and also produce O-H bond. Furthermore, the electrical resistance measurement for Pd/MWNTs films was performed in a chamber with 1% hydrogen gas in a constant dry air flow. Hydrogen sensing behavior of the films was investigated at 50 °C. Pd/MWCNTs films presented an irreversible gas response to hydrogen in the...

Hydrothermal synthesis of ZnO nanorod arrays for photocatalytic inactivation of bacteria

    Abstract
Arrays of ZnO nanorods were synthesized on ZnO seed layer/glass substrates by a hydrothermal method at a low temperature of 70 °C. The effect of pH > 7 of the hydrated zinc nitrate-NaOH precursor on the morphology and topography (e.g. size, surface area and roughness), the optical characteristics (e.g. optical transmission and band-gap energy), hydrophilicity and antibacterial activity of the grown ZnO nanostructure and nanorod coatings were investigated. For pH = 11.33 of the precursor (NaOH concentration of 0.10M), a fast growth of ZnO nanorods on the seed layer (length of ∼1 νm in 1.5 h) was observed. The fast growth of the ZnO nanorods resulted in a significant reduction in the optical...
