    Abstract
In the last decade, the friction stir welding of polymers has been increasingly investigated by the means of more and more sophisticated approaches. Since the early studies, which were aimed at proving the feasibility of the process for polymers and identifying suitable processing windows, great improvements have been achieved. This owes to the increasing care of academic researchers and industrial demands. These improvements have their roots in the promising results from pioneer studies; however, they are also the fruits of the adoption of more comprehensive approaches and the multidisciplinary analyses of results. The introduction of instrumented machines has enabled the online measurement...

Designing optimal controllers for nonlinear frames by considering the effect of response feedback

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1170-1178 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Joghataie, A ; Mohebbi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effect of response feedback on designing optimal controllers for nonlinear frames has been studied. Different combinations of response feedback have been used in the performance index. The Newmark based nonlinear instantaneous optimal control algorithm has been used as the control algorithm in controlling the response of an eight-story bilinear hysteretic frame subjected to white noise excitation and real earthquakes, and controlled by either eight actuators or a single actuator. While the objective has been to minimize the maximum control force for reducing the maximum drift to below the yielding level, the distributed genetic algorithm (DGA) has been used to determine the proper set of...

Finite-element modeling of thermal aspects in high speed cold strip rolling

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part B: Journal of Engineering Manufacture ; Volume 231, Issue 8 , 2017 , Pages 1350-1362 ; 09544054 (ISSN) Koohbor, B ; Moaven, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An integrated model based on finite-element method has been proposed to examine the mechanical and thermal responses of strips and work-rolls in tandem and reverse cold rolling operations. The model has been developed such that the influence of various process parameters, such as lubrication, rolling speed, frictional state and back-up rolls, can be examined. Thermal behaviors of the rolled material and the work-rolls have been analyzed using stream-line upwind Petrov-Galerkin approach, in order to make the model applicable to high-speed rolling processes, as well. The results have been compared to the actual on-line measurements and shown to be of acceptable accuracy. Such modeling approach...

    Abstract
Properly terminating a transmission line, in order to transfer the maximum available power to the load, is an important issue. The problem, fully analyzed in linear lines, is still considered as a persisting problem in the area of nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs). In this paper, an accurate analysis is presented which gives a closed-form formula for the matching efficiency of the NLTLs. Using this analysis, optimal resistive terminating load for the NLTLs was extracted. These results will considerably ease the design of all kinds of the NLTL-based systems, such as high-frequency oscillators and ultrashort pulse generators. This consistent analysis also gives the reflection coefficient...

A predictive approach to control frequency instabilities in a wide area system

    , Article 2009 IEEE/PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition, PSCE 2009, Seattle, WA, 15 March 2009 through 18 March 2009 ; 2009 ; 9781424438112 (ISBN) Mirzazad Barijough, S ; Mashhuri, M ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Wide-area monitoring and control system complements the classical protection systems and overcomes their drawbacks. In such systems a dynamic view of power system, using synchronized measurements in short time intervals, smaller than 20ms, is available. This new kind of system's information provides a novel preventive control action to prevent system's large disturbances. This paper proposes a new method to prevent frequency instabilities immediately after a disturbance occurs in a system. Based on online measurements sent by phasor measurement units, a single machine equivalent model including the governors' effect is computed. An accurate frequency prediction is done based on this novel...

    Abstract
We present a new approach for analytical modeling and calculating the response of high-Tc superconductive transition edge sensors in a wide range of modulation frequencies for different configurations of the film patterns. The method used here is based on solving the heat transfer differential equation for two different time varying heat sources, which are related to the absorbed radiated power. The used method employs two-dimensional boundary conditions for describing meander-line patterned devices. The results from the applied method are in better agreement with those obtained from the frequency response measurements of the characterized samples, than the previously developed models. In...
