    , Article Progress In Electromagnetics Research M ; Vol. 35, issue , 2014 , p. 141-149 Fozi, M ; Nikmehr, S ; Ghurt-Tappeh, M.V ; Bemani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, extended composite right/left-handed (E-CRLH) transmission line (TL) metamaterial structures, with two left-handed (backward) and two right-handed (forward) pass bands, are investigated. Also, design procedures in order to design dual- and quad-band E-CRLH-TLs are presented in detail and the parameters of these structures are extracted by clean formulas, while satisfying arbitrary phase shifts at the operating frequencies. Finally, the dispersion and characteristic impedances of these transmission lines are derived and plotted. The results of this paper can be applied to any type of TL-based dual- and quad-band microwave component

    Abstract
This article presents a novel dual-band transmission line (TL), consisting of a multibranch stub, which can provide equal unwrapped phases at two different frequencies. The frequency ratio can be close to one without any significant degradation in the device performance. Besides, the bandwidth of the proposed line can be manipulated at both frequencies by adjusting the design parameters. The behavior of the structure over the frequency bands is investigated theoretically, and the design procedure and relations are derived. The simulation and measurement results of a quarter-wavelength open-ended stub and a branch-line coupler (BLC) are presented and compared to verify the performance of the...

    Abstract
In this paper the impact of Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) on the impedance calculated by distance relay is investigated. Analytical results are presented and verified by detailed simulations. Six different phase to phase and phase to ground measuring units of the distance relay are simulated to resemble the behavior of the relay. It is shown in this paper that zero sequence of the injected voltage by 48 pulse SSSC converter has the most impact on the apparent impedance seen by the phase to ground fault measuring unit and cause under reaching of distance relay. It can be concluded from the results that SSSC located in the middle of the transmission line cause to divide trip...

    Abstract
In communications, the nodes with the ability of harvesting energy potentially can prolong the overall network lifetime. In this paper, we consider a single-user energy harvesting wireless communication system, in which arrival data and harvested energy curves are modeled as continuous functions. Our goal is to find an online algorithm for the throughput maximization problem, which only needs the causal information of the arrival processes. We propose a heuristic online algorithm which is efficient for both discrete and continuous models, even when the distributions of harvested energy and arrival data are unknown

A closed-form solution for transmission line fault location using local measurements at a remote substation

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 111 , June , 2014 , Pages 115-122 ; ISSN: 03787796 Salehi Dobakhshari, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a novel approach for fault location of overhead transmission lines by voltage and current measurements in a remote substation. The method is applicable when not all of the transmission lines in an area are equipped with fault-locators, although there may be a critical substation (CS) in the area equipped with a digital fault recorder (DFR). In the proposed method, the circuit equations of the network are used to find the transfer function between the fault location and each voltage and current measurement in the CS. Next, two auxiliary variables are defined to transform the nonlinear fault location estimation problem into a linear least squares problem. A closed-form...

Multi-conductor transmission line networks in analysis of side-coupled metal-insulator-metal plasmonic structures

    , Article Optics Communications ; Vol. 313, issue , 2014 , pp. 375-381 ; ISSN: 00304018 Eshaghian, A ; Bahadori, M ; Rezaei, M ; Khavasi, A ; Hodaei, H ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An approximate and accurate enough multi-conductor transmission line model is developed for analysis of side-coupled metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguides. MIM waveguides have been already modeled by single conductor transmission lines. Here, the side coupling effects that exist between neighboring plasmonic structures are taken into account by finding appropriate values for distributed mutual inductance and mutual capacitance between every two neighboring conductors in the conventional single-conductor transmission line models. In this manner, multi-conductor transmission line models are introduced. Closed-form expressions are given for the transmission and reflection of miscellaneous MIM...

Analysis of terahertz-induced optical phase modulation in a nonlinear dielectric slab

    , Article Progress In Electromagnetics Research M ; Volume 13 , 2010 , Pages 41-51 ; 19378726 (ISSN) Ghattan, Z ; Izadi, S. A ; Shahabadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Frequency shift of the spectrum of an incident optical pulse by an intense THz pulse inducing cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a nonlinear dielectric slab is analyzed. The effect is predicted with a high degree of accuracy using the well-known transmission line matrix (TLM) technique. In this research, to model the THz-induced temporal and spatial variation of the dielectric permittivity of the nonlinear dielectric slab, the transmission lines of the TLM method are loaded with open shunt stubs. The parameters of the stubs are modified in accordance with the refractive index variation of the dielectric slab, here ZnTe, induced by the strong THz pulse. The obtained numerical results are...

    Abstract
In this paper, photonic cavities made of point defects in 2-D photonic crystals are modeled by finite-size transmission lines terminated at both ends by appropriate scalar impedances. The proposed model forms a simple transmission line resonator and is demonstrated to be quite beneficial in fast extraction of resonant frequency, quality factor, and mode profile of such photonic cavities. In this manner, an approximate yet quite accurate approach is introduced to characterize the electromagnetic properties of photonic crystal cavities. This method is successfully applied to different structures for both major polarizations and is shown to be as accurate as rigorous numerical methods, viz. the...

    Abstract
To improve power system reliability, it is important to reduce the amount of curtailed load when a contingency occurs. While comparing the conventional methods in load shedding, this paper presents a new approach based on sensitivity between line flows and bus power injections. The proposed method selects a set of buses for alleviating the overloaded transmission lines. The RBTS, IEEE-RTS79, and IEEE 118-bus test systems are used to examine the applicability of the proposed method. The results obtained are compared with those of global optimization and heuristic approach from the amount of curtailed load and the computational burden points of view. It will be shown that the proposed method...

    Abstract
The best energy transfer scenario (BETS) is a situation under which the optimum transfer of power (or energy) from the electric utility to an electric power consumer is achieved. Such a scenario is important because it is used as a reference point to evaluate how efficient the load operates. The index of power factor (PF) is used to quantify such an efficiency. The closer the PF to unity corresponds to more efficient performance of the load. This paper is to show that the conventional definition of the BETS is inadequate and results in an unfair value for the PF unless the transmission line is perfect and lossless (which is an unrealistic condition). The paper also investigates an...

    Abstract
In this paper, a new algorithm for fault detection/location on transmission line based on linear state estimation is presented. The proposed technique uses phasor measurements from PMU's. Fault location and voltage of fault point are added as the new state variables in a linear state estimator based on PMU data. In addition, by using the ability of bad data identification in the state estimation, a new scheme for fault location and identification of faulted transmission line is proposed. For test and validation of the proposed algorithm, simulation results on a six bus test case are presented. ©2009 IEEE
