Online Convex Optimization in Presence of Concept Drift

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rasouli, Sina (Author) ; Razvan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The problem of learning using high volume of data as stream, has attracted much attention recently. In this thesis, the problem is modeled and analized using Online Convex Optimization tools [1], [2]. General performance bounds are stated and clarified in this framework [8]. Using the practical experience in Online Decision Making (e.g., predicting price in Stock Market), the need for a more flexible model, which adapts to changes in problem, is presented. In this thesis, after reviewing the literature and online convex optimization framework, we will define ”Concept Drift”, which describes changes in the dynamics of the problem and the statistical tools to detect it [13], [5]. And finally,...

Minimum entropy control of chaos via online particle swarm optimization method

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Vol. 36, Issue. 8 , 2012 , pp. 3931-3940 ; ISSN: 0307904X Sadeghpour, M ; Salarieh, H ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
One of the recently developed approaches for control of chaos is the minimum entropy (ME) control technique. In this method an entropy function based on the Shannon definition, is defined for a chaotic system. The control action is designed such that the entropy as a cost function is minimized which results in more regular pattern of motion for the system trajectories. In this paper an online optimization technique using particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is developed to calculate the control action based on ME strategy. The method is examined on some standard chaotic maps with error feedback and delayed feedback forms. Considering the fact that the optimization is online, simulation...

An online transmission policy for energy harvesting systems with data traffic arrival

    Abstract
In communications, the nodes with the ability of harvesting energy potentially can prolong the overall network lifetime. In this paper, we consider a single-user energy harvesting wireless communication system, in which arrival data and harvested energy curves are modeled as continuous functions. Our goal is to find an online algorithm for the throughput maximization problem, which only needs the causal information of the arrival processes. We propose a heuristic online algorithm which is efficient for both discrete and continuous models, even when the distributions of harvested energy and arrival data are unknown

Optimization of the electric arc furnace process

    Abstract
This paper presents an electric arc furnace (EAF) optimization framework intended to define optimal control profiles for the EAF, in order to increase its efficiency and thus reduce the energy consumption. The framework aims to minimize controllable losses and to maximize energy transfer to the bath and, consequently, minimize the operational costs. This is achieved through improved actuation of the EAF inputs, i.e., transformer power, oxygen lancing, and carbon addition. To achieve maximal energy transfer to the bath and to reduce the heat losses from the arcs, proper properties of the slag, such as foaminess and basicity, are a subject of considerable attention. The framework is designed...

Three Dimensional Multi-Objective Terrain Following/Avoidance Optimization Using Heuristic Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kamyar, Reza (Author) ; Pourtakdoust, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Thus far, there has been a great attraction toward the optimal flight path planning problem. Terrain following/avoidance (TF/TA) flight is one of the most significant applications of this issue. To prevent from detection by the radars, fighter aircrafts, cruise missiles and helicopters often have to fly as close as possible to the surface during the operations. Such types of maneuvers are much more demanding and effortful than to be designed and implemented by human. The optimal TF/TA guidance system design comprises three phases: optimal path planning, closed-loop control system design for trajectory tracking and sensor blending to match the onboard and measured terrain data. So far, the...
