Investigating the impacts of different price-based demand response programs on home load management

    , Article Journal of Electrical Engineering and Technology ; Vol. 9, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 1125-1131 ; ISSN: 19750102 Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Choi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Application of residential demand response (DR) programs are currently realized up to a limited extent due to customers' difficulty in manually responding to the time-differentiated prices. As a solution, this paper proposes an automatic home load management (HLM) framework to achieve the household minimum payment as well as meet the operational constraints to provide customer's comfort. The projected HLM method controls on/off statuses of responsive appliances and the charging/discharging periods of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery storage at home. This paper also studies the impacts of different time-varying tariffs, i.e., time of use (TOU), real time pricing (RTP), and...

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel approach has been presented to simulate and optimize the pulsating heat pipes (PHPs). The used pulsating heat pipe setup was designed and constructed for this study. Due to the lack of a general mathematical model for exact analysis of the PHPs, a method has been applied for simulation and optimization using the natural algorithms. In this way, the simulator consists of a kind of multilayer perceptron neural network, which is trained by experimental results obtained from our PHP setup. The results show that the complex behavior of PHPs can be successfully described by the non-linear structure of this simulator. The input variables of the neural network are input heat...

    Abstract
This paper develops a mathematical model based on the stochastic programming for simultaneous generation expansion and retirement planning. Retirement decision of the existing generating units is accommodated since these units are aging more and more. The proposed method is formulated as an optimization problem in which the objective function is to minimize the expected total cost consisting of the investment required for commissioning new units, operation and maintenance costs, the retirement salvage cost, and the system risk cost. The problem is subjected to a set of generating unit and system physical and operational constraints. The modeling of energy limited units is also devised in a...

    Abstract
Optimal transmission switching (OTS) along with optimal bus-bar switching, also known as network topology optimization (NTO), has been previously proposed and utilized as a powerful tool to reduce operational costs. However, operational constraints and reliability considerations of NTO problem have not been addressed properly. In this paper, operational constraints are integrated in NTO problem and the effect of transmission network switching on expected interruption cost (EIC) is investigated. Moreover, a novel approach based on pool of solutions approach is presented, which can generate various switching scenarios. In doing so, the decision maker would be able to analyze and choose the...

    Abstract
In the past decade, enhancing the reliability of distribution networks by means of optimal switch placement has attracted much attention. In the case of failures in a distribution feeder, such disconnect switches will isolate the faulted section, and the customers downstream of the faulted point can be supplied by neighboring feeders through tie lines. Nevertheless, such reserve branches not only might experience failures themselves but also may not even exist prior to the switch placement. Accordingly, this paper presents a mathematical-programming-based model for the concurrent placement of disconnect switches and tie lines in the distribution networks to enhance the service reliability,...

    Abstract
This paper presents a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) algorithm for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problems. The main distinction of this approach is in using particle's worth experience in stead of the best previous experience. The proposed approach is evaluated on the IEEE 30-bus test system which minimizes the total fuel cost considering operational constraints such as power flow equations, transmission flow limits, bus voltages and reactive power of generators. The results obtained using the proposed approach are compared with results of other optimization methods

    Abstract
Constraint automata have been proposed as the operational semantics of Reo, a glue-code language for the exogenous composition and orchestration of components in a software system. In this paper we recast the theory of constraint automata into that of Büchi automata on infinite strings of records. We use records to express simultaneity constraints of I/O operations and show that every constraint automaton can be expressed as a Büchi automaton on an appropriate alphabet of records. Further, we give examples of component compositions that are expressible as Büchi automata but not as constraint automata. Finally, we show that the join composition operator for constraint automata and its...

    Abstract
The overall design of cold gas propulsion systems is pretty complicated when considering the mission requirements, operating constraints and functional limitations imposed by the mechanical components. To address this complication, a precise design process is proposed, which attempts to optimize the cost of operation as well as to minimize the waste volume and weight by using multi-objective trade-off analysis. This analysis is based on a set of ordinary differential equations that are solved iteratively to describe the optimal behavior of the system. Therefore, a numerical code is being developed to give insight on the design sensitivity with respect to uncertainties on the design...

    Abstract
A majority of remote power systems are going to be supplied by diesel-renewable resources such as wind and photovoltaic energy in the future. However, the unpredictable nature of wind generation increases the concern about the reliable operation of these isolated microgrids. Using energy storage systems (ESSs) is recently accepted as an efficient solution to the volatility and intermittency of renewable energy sources. In this paper, a stochastic programming based on the Monte Carlo approach is introduced for optimal planning of remote systems. So far, most literatures have focused exclusively on the energy storage initial sizing. However, capacity expansion of ESS through the time span can...

    Abstract
Minimization of operating costs is one of the most important objectives of power system operators. To achieve this goal, several optimization problems such as unit commitment and optimal power flow have been introduced. Historically, in these problems, the transmission network has been considered as a static system, i.e., the ability of transmission lines switching is not modeled. On the other hand, it has been shown that transmission line switching can significantly reduce operating costs by the means of topology modification. However, considering this capability, a large number of binary variables are introduced in the objective function, and as a consequence, the computation time will be...

    Abstract
This article proposes a bang-bang auxiliary frequency control scheme for doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines. It results in the DFIGs emulate the primary frequency control of conventional units and, thus, increases the power system frequency stability. Indeed, the suggested hysteresis controller causes to deliver the maximum extractable kinetic energy of DFIGs to the grid and consequently further enhance the power system frequency. This is accomplished using different frequency deviation indices, which determine the size of power mismatch and lead to an appropriate frequency response by the DFIGs. The operational constraints of the DFIGs are taken into account in the...

    Abstract
With the exception of a few works, the current approaches to aerial manipulation control do not typically consider the system constraints in the control design process. Also, the issue of closed-loop stability in the presence of system constraints is not thoroughly analyzed. In this paper, a novel multi-stage model predictive control (MPC)-based approach for aerial manipulation is proposed to ensure the closed-loop stability in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances, while satisfying the operational constraints. The detailed nonlinear model of a general aerial manipulator, consisting of a quadrotor equipped with a 3 degrees of freedom manipulator, is first developed...

    Abstract
The objective of the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) problem is to schedule power generation for the online units for a given time horizon economically, satisfying various operational constraints. Due to the effect of valve-point effects and prohibited operating zones (POZs) in the generating units cost functions, DED problem is a highly non-linear and non-convex optimization problem. The DED problem even may be more complicated if transmission losses and ramp-rate constraints are taken into account. This paper presents a novel and heuristic algorithm to solve DED problem of generating units, by employing time varying acceleration coefficients iteration particle swarm optimization...
