    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel, cost effective visual cryptography scheme suitable for color image transmission over bandwidth constraint channels. Unlike previously proposed schemes, the solution offers perfect reconstruction while producing shares with size smaller than that of the input image. The maximum distance separable (MDS) code principle used in the design allows for the introduction of a flexible framework that compares favorably to competing solutions as it can be seen by examining the experimental results included in this paper. ©2008 IEEE

    Abstract
Optical computing has emerged as a promising candidate for real-time and parallel continuous data processing. Motivated by recent progresses in metamaterial-based analog computing [Science 343, 160 (2014)], we theoretically investigate the realization of two-dimensional complex mathematical operations using rotated configurations, recently reported in [Opt. Lett. 39, 1278 (2014)]. Breaking the reflection symmetry, such configurations could realize both even and odd Green's functions associated with spatial operators. Based on such an appealing theory and by using the Brewster effect, we demonstrate realization of a firstorder differentiator. Such an efficient wave-based computation method...

Integration in analog optical computing using metasurfaces revisited: toward ideal optical integration

    , Article Journal of the Optical Society of America B: Optical Physics ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 1270-1279 ; 07403224 (ISSN) Babashah, H ; Kavehvash, Z ; Koohi, S ; Khavasi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a modified optical integrator based on suitably designed metamaterial blocks. The integration is performed on an impinging wave pattern as it propagates through these blocks. So far, various metamaterial-based optical integrators have been implemented with appropriate performance in the case of zero- DC input signals. However, these integrators suffer from low accuracy when fed by signals rich in low-frequency contents. The latter property arises from truncation of low-frequency contents of the input wave in the Fourier domain. To solve this shortcoming, we propose a new metasurface-based structure which reflects low-frequency parts of the input signal in the...

Analog optical computing by half-wavelength slabs

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 407 , 2018 , Pages 338-343 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Zangeneh Nejad, F ; Khavasi, A ; Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A new approach to perform analog optical differentiation is presented using half-wavelength slabs. First, a half-wavelength dielectric slab is used to design a first order differentiator. The latter works properly for both major polarizations, in contrast to our previously design based on Brewster effect (Youssefi et al., 2016). Inspired by the proposed dielectric differentiator, and by exploiting the unique features of graphene, we further design and demonstrate a reconfigurable and highly miniaturized differentiator using a half-wavelength plasmonic graphene film. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed graphene-based differentiator is even smaller than the most compact differentiator...

    Abstract
In this Letter, we realize the concept of analog computing using an engineered gradient dielectric meta-reflect-array. The proposed configuration consists of individual subwavelength silicon nanobricks, in combination with a fused silica spacer and silver ground plane, realizing a reflection beam with full phase coverage of 2π degrees, as well as an amplitude range of 0 to 1. Spectrally overlapping electric and magnetic dipole resonances, such high-index dielectric metasurfaces can locally and independently manipulate the amplitude and phase of the incident electromagnetic wave. This practically feasible structure overcomes substantial limitations imposed by plasmonic metasurfaces such as...

    Abstract
The wavelength-based machine is a computational model working with light and optical devices. Wavelength-Based machine assumes that it can breakdown light to several very small pieces and act on them simultaneously to achieve efficiency in computation. In this paper, first we introduce the wavelength-based machine. Then, we define two new operations: concentration and double concentration operations, which give the wavelength-based machine the ability to check the emptiness of one and two light rays. Both of the concentration and double concentration operations are implemented by white-black imaging systems. In this paper, we compare the computational power of P-uniform wavelength-based...

    Abstract
In this letter, a new approach to perform edge detection is presented using an all-dielectric complimentary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible metasurface. Our design is based on the guided-mode resonance, which provides a high quality factor resonance to make the edge detection experimentally realizable. The proposed structure is easy to fabricate, and it can be exploited for detection of edges in two dimensions due to its symmetry. In addition, a tradeoff between gain and the resolution of edge detection is discussed, which can be adjusted using appropriate design parameters. The proposed edge detector potentially can be used in ultrafast analog computing and image processing. ©...

    Abstract
Analog computing has emerged as a promising candidate for real-time and parallel continuous data processing. This article presents a reciprocal way for realizing asymmetric optical transfer functions (OTFs) in the reflection side of the on-axis processing channels. It is rigorously demonstrated that the presence of cross-polarization exciting normal polarizabilities (CPENPs) of a reciprocal metasurface circumvents the famous challenge of Green's function approach in implementation of on-axis reflective optical signal processing while providing dual computing channels under orthogonal polarizations. Following a comprehensive theoretical discussion and as a proof of concept, an all-dielectric...

    Abstract
Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can directly generate some high-level descriptions of the video content which can be further employed in rule mining and abnormal event detection. The most recent and successful unsupervised approaches for complex traffic scene analysis are based on topic models. However, most existing topic models share some key characteristics which could limit their utility. In this paper, based on extracted optical flow features from video clips, we employ Sparse Topical Coding (STC) framework to automatically discover typical motion patterns in traffic scenes. For this purpose, we improve the STC to overcome one of the drawbacks of topic models with the aim of...

    Abstract
Scattering particles constitute a key light trapping solution for thin film photovoltaics where either the particles are embedded in the light absorbing layer or a thick layer of them is used as a reflector. Here we introduce a monolayer of wavelength-scale core-shell silica@Ag particles as a novel light trapping strategy for thin film photovoltaics. These particles show hybrid photonic-plasmonic resonance modes that scatter light strongly and with small parasitic absorption losses in Ag (<1.5%). In addition, their scattering efficiency does not vary significantly with the refractive index of the surrounding medium. A monolayer of these particles is applied as the top-scattering layers in a...

    Abstract
In this paper, intelligent traffic surveillance system as an important part of a smart resilient city is reviewed. The smart traffic control system is very important in improving the lifestyle by decreasing the traffic saturation and air pollution. Still, multi-camera vision is more helpful in implementing different automatic traffic surveillance systems. Apart from their superior features, existing multi-camera surveillance systems suffer from computational complexity and degraded accuracy. The main reason for these shortcomings arises from image processing errors. These errors depend on the image content and thus are not predictable. To overcome this shortage, three-dimensional (3D)...

    Abstract
In this paper, we present an optical computing method for string data alignment applicable to genome information analysis. By applying moire technique to spatial encoding patterns of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences, association information of the genome and the expressed phenotypes could more effectively be extracted. Such moire fringes reveal occurrence of matching, deletion and insertion between DNA sequences providing useful visualized information for prediction of gene function and classification of species. Furthermore, by applying a cylindrical lens, a new technique is proposed to map two-dimensional (2D) association information to a one-dimensional (1D) column of pixels, where...

Noise reduction in OCT skin images

    Abstract
OCT skin images suffer from artifacts. Speckle is the main artifact while the other one is called background noise. In this study, we propose an algorithm that significantly reduces the background noise before applying a speckle reduction method. The results show that the diagnostically relevant features in the images become clearer after applying the proposed method. We used sub-pixel weighted median filtering for speckle reduction. The results from background noise removal in combination with the proposed speckle reduction algorithm show a significant improvement in the clarity of diagnostically relevant features in in-vivo human skin images. © 2017 SPIE

    Abstract
In electronic computers, extensive amount of computations required for searching biological sequences in big databases leads to vast amount of energy consumption for electrical processing and cooling. On the other hand, optical processing is much faster than electrical counterpart, due to its parallel processing capability, at a fraction of energy consumption level and cost. In this regard, this paper proposes a correlation-based optical algorithm using metamaterial, taking advantages of optical parallel processing, to efficiently locate the edits as a means of DNA sequence comparison. Specifically, the proposed algorithm partitions the read DNA sequence into multiple overlapping intervals,...

    Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides cross-sectional images from microstructures of tissues. This optical imaging system works based on Michelson interferometry principle and has intermediate resolution and penetration depth which makes it appropriate for imaging thin tissues such as skin and eye. OCT images suffer from three main artifacts that make images difficult to be analyzed. The first one is small grainy structures called speckle which degrade image quality and decreases axial and lateral resolution. The second one is light intensity attenuation which is a function of depth. It happens because of absorbing and scattering nature of tissue...

    Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of on-chip temporal optical computing, based on dispersive Fourier transform and suitably designed modulation module, to perform mathematical operations of interest, such as differentiation, integration, or convolution in time domain. The desired mathematical operation is performed as signal propagates through a fully reconfigurable on-chip photonic signal processor. Although a few numbers of photonic temporal signal processors have been introduced recently, they are usually bulky or they suffer from limited reconfigurability which is of great importance to implement large-scale general-purpose photonic signal processors. To address these limitations, this...
