    Abstract
Transmission line formulation is used to analyze two-dimensional low-loss metallic gratings at optical frequencies when plasmonic waves propagate in the structure. This method, like the Fourier modal method, suffers from numerical instabilities when applied to such structures. A systematic approach to avoid these instabilities is presented. These numerical artifacts are attributed to the violation of Li's inverse rule and the appearance of higher-order spurious modes. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to identify and to greatly reduce the effect of these spurious modes based on the accuracy by which these modes are satisfying the conservation of momentum. Furthermore, the proposed...

Photonic Generation of low Phase Noise Microwave Oscillation

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Esmail (Author) ; Banai, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ultralow phase noise microwave oscillators with high stability are one of the key components required for many applications. With recent advances in ultrapure microwave oscillators, optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs) culminated in the state-of-the-art ultralow phase noise microwave oscillators. In this thesis, a nonlinear analytical approach is used to predict the main oscillation mode power and spurious levels in ultrapure microwave OEOs. Our analytical predictions are verified by numerical simulations and experimental data. Performance of an intensity-modulation direct-detection (IMDD) microwave photonic link (MWPL) operating under nonlinear conditions when its input consists of a sum of...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study theoretically the generation of high repetition rate short pulses using fiber optical parametric amplification. We show that the pulse shape and duration depend on the signal location relatively to the pump frequency. We demonstrate that in order to get the shortest pulse width, the signal must be located at one of the extremities of the gain spectrum associated with the pump peak power. We derive the analytical expression of the pulse shape in this case and compare it to the exponential gain regime case. Using numerical simulations, we also analyze the impact of walk-off and pump phase modulation that is required to suppress Stimulated Brillouin Scattering and derive...

    Abstract
Spectrum conversion can improve the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based elastic optical networks (EONs) by relaxing the continuity constraint and consequently reducing connection request blocking probability during routing and spectrum assignment process. We propose three different architectures for including spectrum conversion capability in bandwidth-variable wavelength cross-connects (BVWXCs). To compare the capability of the introduced architectures, we develop an analytical method for computing average connection request blocking probability in a spectrum-convertible OFDM-based EON in which all, part, or none of the BVWXCs can convert the spectrum. An...

    Abstract
Material design and input field properties limit high-harmonic excitation efficiency of surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in a nanoscopic device. We remedy these limitations by developing a concept for a plasmonic waveguide that exploits spatiotemporal control of a weak surface polaritonic field to create efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) and periodic phase singularities. Our configuration comprises four-level double 3-type atomic medium (43 As) doped in a lossless dielectric situated above a negative-index metamaterial (NIMM) layer. We report the coherent excitation and propagation of the multiple surface polaritonic shock waves (SWs) and establish the highly efficient frequency combs by...
