    Active control of trusses under heavy static loads

    Abstract
    Trusses are suitable load-bearing structural systems for heavy concentrated loads. In this paper, it is shown that it is possible to use active control mechanisms to enhance the load-bearing capacity of the trusses. Under heavy loading, some elements of a truss might experience high stresses and show non-linear behavior, resulting in large deformations in the truss. Under such a condition, some elements of the truss might damage which can lead to the collapse of the truss. Application of control forces on some of the degrees of freedom of the truss can render help the truss tolerate larger forces before its collapse.     A new algorithm for the solution of multimaterial topology optimization problems is introduced in the present study. The presented method is based on the splitting of a multiphase topology optimization problem into a series of binary phase topology optimization sub-problems which are solved partially, in a sequential manner, using a traditional binary phase topology optimization solver; internal solver.     Abstract
    Nonlinear dimensionality reduction methods have demonstrated top-notch performance in many pattern recognition and image classification tasks. Despite their popularity, they suffer from highly expensive time and memory requirements, which render them inapplicable to large-scale datasets. To leverage such cases we propose a new method called "Path-Based Isomap". Similar to Isomap, we exploit geodesic paths to find the low-dimensional embedding. However, instead of preserving pairwise geodesic distances, the low-dimensional embedding is computed via a path-mapping algorithm.     Abstract
    This paper addresses the effect of different optimization criteria for the control purpose of vehicle suspension. In the present study, active vibration control system for a 5 degree-of-freedom (DoF) pitch-plane suspension model with bounce and pitch motions is investigated. In the proposed vehicle model, the impact of the wheel-axle-brake assemblies' masses is also considered. The developed model is controlled using a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) to minimize the vibration of the driver's seat. The controller is designed to control the applied force to the seat.     We propose an efficient and effective nonlinear feature domain noise suppression algorithm, motivated by the minimum mean square error (MMSE) optimization criterion. Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network in the log spectral domain minimizes the difference between noisy and clean speech. By using this method as a pre-processing stage of a speech recognition system, the recognition rate in noisy environments is improved. We can extend the application of the system to different environments with different noises without re-training it.
