    Abstract
Forecasts predict that the volume of digital data will increase by 300 times in 2020 compared with 2005. This significant growth further emphasizes the importance of Big Data as well as Big Data Processing. MapReduce and its open source implementation Hadoop are prevailing frameworks for implementing Big Data Analytics and applications. Because of inherently huge amount of data and computational requirements of Big Data applications, acquisition of large amount of computational resources is necessary. However, managing in-house clusters to respond the computational requirements is costly such that small- and middle-sized companies either cannot afford it, or find cloud-based solutions...

Bank-firm Ownership Association Impact on Loan Provision in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Sepideh (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor) ; Mahmoudzadeh, Amineh (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Related Lending is defined as banks making loans to firms with which they have some kind of ownership association. On one hand, this practice can help diminish asymmetric information between bank and firm which results in a more efficient allocation of bank’s resources. On the other hand, it may lead to the banks’ transferring resources to their related firms inefficiently, without meticulously assessing the risks involved. This paper is focused on the effect of the relationship between bank and firm in their ownership structure, on the loan provision. I have gathered a unique dataset of private and privatized banks and also private firms active in Iran’s stock market, which covers the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahmand, Hamid (Author) ; Tajrishy, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of the surface and ground water resources are allocated to agriculture in Iran. Even though lots of water is used in this field, the level of crop production is not satisfactory due to mismanagement. Besides, environmental issues caused by surface and ground water overuse has brought the crucial situation into the governers’ attention. Over the past two decades, Lake Urmia water basin has encountered lots of environmental issues such as decrease in lake water surface. Any effort to improve water reources consumption can be very helpful to lake restoration process. Miandoab plain known as one of the main sub basins of Lake Urmia provides the lake with more than half of its surface water...

Designing a Mathematical Model for Optimizing Organ Transplant Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Poursaeed, Alireza (Author) ; Najafi, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Presently, numerous patients die each day while they are awaiting life-saving organ transplant. Despite advances in medicine and technology, and increased awareness of organ donation and transplantation, the gap between supply and demand continues to widen. Therefore, appropriate utilization of donated organs under organ allocation process is vital, and can save several patients’ life. Due to this cause, this study presents a mixed integer multi-period mathematical model to optimize allocation system in an organ transplantation network. The considered network includes donors, hospitals, procurement centers, transplant centers, and patients. The proposed model strives to minimize the overall...

Optimal Assignment of Patients from Emergency Department to Inpatient Hospital Wards

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shakeri, Mahdi (Author) ; Haji, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding is one the most problems and challenges that every Emergency Department all over the world is facing with. This problem leads to some problems like prolonged waiting times and Length of Stay in Emergency Department. “Boarding time” is one of the most important ones, which is the time a patient spend for being transferred from Emergency Department to one of the Hospital Inpatient Wards. One important solution to this problem is “overflowing”, and it means allocating patients to an alternative ward rather than their primary ward. In practice, the overflowing process usually controlled in a myopic manner. Limited number of researches that focus in this...

Estimation of natural gas optimum allocation to consuming sectors in year 2025 in Iran

    , Article Energy Sources, Part B: Economics, Planning and Policy ; Volume 11, Issue 7 , 2016 , Pages 587-596 ; 15567249 (ISSN) Maroufmashat, A ; Sattari, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Inc
    Abstract
Due to a large number of rich natural gas reserves in Iran, and considering the acceptable income from the exports of oil products, the consumption of gas instead of oil products in different consuming sectors seems to be rational. Therefore, in this article, the allocation of natural gas to different sectors such as residential, industries, power plants, transportation, reinjection to oil wells, export, and so forth is estimated based on the three scenarios using a linear programming method for the year 2025 in Iran. The results indicate that if there is no planned consumption management, the allocation of gas in future years will certainly have deficiencies in some sectors in Iran....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vahabpour, Amir (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor) ; Sattari, Sourena (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
According to the World Bank, nearly 154 billion cubic meters of gas is flared in the world every year. Iran is known as the third gas flaring country by burning about 11.4 bcm (approximately 8% of the total amount). Flared gas is a rich gas and has a high heating value. Therefore flaring it equals to waste of a valuable source of energy. In addition, serious concerns about its environmental effects due to emission of considerable amounts of CO2, SOx, NOx and other pollutants, makes it necessary to find a solution to reduce gas flaring. There are several ways for flared gas utilization including electricity generation, injecting into oil wells for enhanced oil recovery, gas processing and...
