Abstract
Glucose was acylated with palmitic acid using two kinds of lipases. The reactions were performed in the presence of an organic solvent. Solvent effect and molecular sieve effect and also the effect of enzyme amount and influence of molar ratio of substrates on glucose palmitate production with lipase from Rhizomucor miehei (Palatase® M) were studied. Application of molecular sieves together with open system increased palmitic acid conversion in the reaction mixture. Glucose palmitate was obtained in 41.18% conversion in hexane at 40°C with Palatase® M. Glucose palmitate was also synthesized with lipase from Candida antarctica (Novozyme 435). Esterification of palmitic acid with glucose...
Multiwalled carbon nanotube-polyelectrolyte gels: Preparation and swelling behavior for organic solvents
, Article Solid State Ionics ; Vol. 257 , 2014 , pp. 32-37 ; ISSN: 01672738 ; Doulabi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this article, we report the first multiwalled carbon nanotube-polyelectrolyte gel containing vinylimidazolium-typed ionic liquid monomer as an absorbent of less-polar or nonpolar organic solvents. To prepare such MWCNT-polyelectrolyte gel, the modified MWCNTs with polymerizable vinyl groups on their surfaces were prepared and then underwent copolymerizations with dodecyl methacrylate and vinylimidazolium in the presence of AIBN as initiator, yielding a cross-linked polyelectrolyte. In order to estimate the compatibility between the solvents and the polymers, a series of vinylimidazolium-typed ionic liquid monomers ([Cnvim][X]) with different alkyl tail length (C6, C10 and C12) and counter...

Abstract
Novel class of polyelectrolyte gels based on the copolymer of vinylimidazolium-typed ionic liquid monomer and Dodecyl methacrylate was prepared by free radical polymerization. A small amount of 3-n-Dodecyl-1- vinylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is incorporated into crosslinked polyacrylates to provide new lipophilic polyelectrolyte gels that evaluated for swelling in less-polar and nonpolar organic solvents. Their swelling degree becomes more than 50 times as much as their dried weights in some organic solvents. By varying the polarity of the neutral monomer in these polyelectrolyte gels, the design of gels that can absorb solvents of nearly any polarity is demonstrated. The present...

LiClO4 • 3H2O promoted highly regioselective ring-opening of epoxides with thiols under neutral conditions
, Article Catalysis Communications ; Volume 7, Issue 4 , 2006 , Pages 224-227 ; 15667367 (ISSN) ; Saidi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2006
Abstract
A simple, rapid, atom economy and highly efficient procedure has been developed for thiolysis of epoxides by aromatic and aliphatic thiols under solvent-free conditions. A high regioselectivity in favor of nucleophilic attack at the benzylic carbon atom of aromatic epoxides, such as styrene oxide, is observed. However, aliphatic unsymmetrical alkenyl oxides undergo selective nucleophilic attack at the sterically less hindered carbon atom. A variety of β-hydroxy sulfides were obtained in short reaction time and excellent yields with nearly complete regioselectivity. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

, Article Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry ; 2006, Volume 4, Issue 23, Pages 4275-4277 ; Arynasab, F ; Saidi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
An operationally simple and entirely green protocol for heteropoly acid catalyst conjugate addition of indoles and pyrrole to unsaturated carbonyl compounds and nitro-alkene in water was investigated. It is important that the products arising from 1,2-addition were not observed under the reaction conditions. Pyrroles also readily underwent Michael addition at Α-positions under the same reaction conditions. Indole and many of its derivatives are present in many substances commonly found in nature. Micheal addition reactions are performed in organic solvents with the reactions in water are relatively scarce. The Michael addition between indole and methyl vinyl ketone in the presence of...

Abstract
Silicone rubber (SR) was irradiated by electron beam over a dose range of 50-300 kGy in the absence of chemical reagents. Molecular weight between crosslinks (Mc) in the network of SB was determined by two methods of solvent swelling and modulus of elasticity. The network structure of the elastomer crosslinked by electron beam irradiation and chemical vulcanization was compared. Mechanical tests were performed to determine shore hardness, tensile elongation, strength and modulus of the samples. It was found that SR is effectively crosslinked by electron beam irradiation. The tensile strength, hardness, modulus and elongation of irradiated SR were higher than peroxide-crosslinked SR. The...

Application of Polymeric Membranes in Separation of Lube Oil Dissolved in MEK/Toluene Using OSN
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
A kind of novel nanofiltration membrane process is proposed to solvent recovery from dewaxed lube oil stream in an energy-saving way. Most of the nanofiltration membrane materials are polymeric and cannot survive harsh conditions, for example, MEK contained solvents. Hence, high solubility of most of the polymeric materials in the solvent, especially in the MEK, is a challenge to researchers. To prepare a polymeric membrane that can solve the problem integrally skinned polyaniline (PAni) membrane was cast on a woven polyester backing material, and then crosslinked in two different ways, chemically and thermally, to make the membrane resistant in MEK (methyl ethyl ketene) and toluene for long...

Abstract
An experimental study was conducted on the desulfurization of non-hydrotreated kerosene with oxidation followed by liquid-liquid extraction. Various types of solvents including acetonitrile, methanol, and ethanol have been examined in the extraction of oxidized sulfur-containing compounds of kerosene. The performance of these solvents has been carefully examined and compared. It was found that their performance follows the order: acetonitrile > methanol > ethanol. The effects of number of extraction stages and solvent to kerosene ratio on the desulfurization and recovery of kerosene have been investigated. The experimental results show that for all three solvents, solvent/kerosene ratio and...

Abstract
Aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction kinetics of 2-chloro-3,5-dinitropyridine with aniline was studied in aqueous solutions of methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol at room temperature. The obtained results for aqueous solutions indicate that the second-order rate constants are in order of 2-propanol>ethanol>methanol with a maximum at water mole fraction of 0.9. The influence of solvent parameters including normalized polarity (E TN), dipolarity/polarisability (π*), and hydrogen bond donor acidity (α) on the second-order rate constants were investigated and multiple regressions gave much better results with regard to single parameter regressions. Dipolarity/polarisability and hydrogen...

Abstract
The solvatochromic parameters (ETN, normalized polarity parameter; π*, dipolarity/polarizability; β, hydrogen-bond acceptor basicity; α, hydrogen-bond donor acidity) were determined for binary solvent mixtures of 1-(1-butyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) with water, methanol, and ethanol at 25°C over the whole range of mole fractions. In nonaqueous solutions, the ETN value of the mixture increases with mole the fraction of [bmim]BF4 and then decreases gradually to the value of pure [bmim]BF4. Positive deviation from ideal behavior was observed for the solvent parameters ETN, π*, and α, whereas the deviation of the β parameter is negative. The applicability of the combined...
