    Abstract
In the present investigation, graphene sheets are simulated as Nano resonators using Kirchhoff plate theory and nonlocal continuum theory. External force and interlayer forces are simulated as harmonic and Winkler-like elastic foundation, respectively. Equations are solved analytically and numerically and corresponding results are presented. Considering a two layer resonator, natural frequencies and oscillation amplitude are investigated by free vibration and forced vibration analysis. Also, the effects of parameters such as small scale, sheets dimensions and inciting frequency on the vibration of the resonator, are displayed

    Abstract
A series of experiments were conducted on an oscillating airfoil in subsonic flow. The model was oscillated in two types of motions, pitch and plunge, at different velocities, and reduced frequencies. In addition, steady data were acquired and examined to furnish a baseline for analysis and comparison. The imposed variables of the experiment were reduced frequency, mean incident angle, amplitude of motion, and free stream velocity as well as the surface grit roughness. The unsteady aerodynamic loads were calculated using surface pressure measurements, 64 ports, along the chord for both upper and lower surfaces of the model. Particular emphases were placed on the effects of different type of...

Oscillator Design Using Fractional Order Delayed Systems with a Minimum Order

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Allahdinian Hasaruyeh, Moein (Author) ; Haeri, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The maximum number of oscillation frequencies which can be generated in a linear integer order system at the steady state is the half of its inner dimension. In this thesis, we seek the using of fractional order delayed systems with minimum order to produce maximum number of oscillation frequencies. We found a relation between the system parameters and the oscillation frequency and then adjust the system’s coefficients so that all the roots of the characteristic equation, except the roots on the imaginary axis, lie on the left-hand side of the imaginary axis. Taking into account the diagonal and triangular lower for the state space matrices of fractional order systems with one delay, we...

    Abstract
Surface pressure measurements were conducted for a pitch oscillation wing in a subsonic closed circuit wind tunnel. Experimental results have been used to train a multilayer perceptron network to foresee the effect of modification of oscillation amplitude and reduced frequency. Consistent results are obtained both for the training data as well as generalization to other amplitudes and reduced frequencies. This work indicates that artificial neural networks can reliably predict aerodynamic coefficients and forecast the effects of oscillation amplitude as well as reduced frequency on the wind turbine blade performance. Moreover, this study introduces a new tool for the designers to have enough...

    Abstract
In order to study the heat transfer mechanism and predict the heat transfer capability of a pulsating heat pipe (PHP), a numerical model was used to simulate the oscillating behavior of liquid slug considering liquid film thickness in the evaporator and reduction of liquid film thickness due to evaporation. In this article, thermal performance of an open loop closed end PHP of copper with a diameter of 1 mm and various working fluids including water (DW) and ethanol was investigated. The governing equations of mass, momentum, and energy equations were solved for liquid slug and vapor plugs. The results showed that by considering liquid film thickness behind the liquid slug, for both the...

    Abstract
The characteristics of unsteady flow field around a low-aspect-ratio pitching wing with an airfoil section used in horizontal axis wind turbine are investigated at Reynolds number 2.8×105 and Mach number 0.06. The major objective of this study was to investigate the effects of reduced frequency, oscillating amplitude, mean angle of attack and 3D effects on aerodynamic coefficients. Using aerodynamic coefficients, the unsteady aerodynamics in pre-, near-, and post-static stall regions are analyzed and the results are validated with the corresponding experimental data. The two-dimensional simulation results demonstrate the significant effects of reduced frequency, mean angle of attack and...

Effect of Aquatic Plants Flexibility on Lateral and Vertical Dispersion

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Sehat, Haleh (Author) ; Jamali, Mirmosadegh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Flexible vegetation has a significant impact on the small-scale hydrodynamics of aquatic environments, which governs the dispersion of dissolved and particulate material. Flexible canopies bend and oscillate in both the in-line and cross-flow directions due to periodic forcing associated with vortex shedding. The resultant plant motion affects the vegetation wake structure and, hence, the rate of lateral dispersion in these environments. Despite a recently-developed understanding of dispersion in rigid canopies, a framework that can predict the effect of plant-induced vibrations on mixing in flexible canopy environments is still lacking. Here, we investigate the role of the flexibility of...

    Abstract
With the successes in numerous applications from signal filtering to chemical and mass sensing, micro- and nano-electro-mechanical resonators continue to be one of the most widely studied topics of the micro-electro-mechanical systems community. Nonlinearities arising out of different sources such as mid-plane stretching and electrostatic force lead to a rich nonlinear dynamics in the time response of these systems which should be investigated for appropriate design and fabrication of them. Motivated by this need, present study is devoted to analyzing the nonlinear dynamics and chaotic behavior of nano resonators with electrostatic forces on both sides. Based on the potential function and...

    Abstract
A series of tests were carried out to study the unsteady wake behaviour behind an aerofoil which is a section of a wind-turbine blade. The model is oscillated in pitch about its quarter chord axis at various reduced frequencies, amplitudes, and mean angles-of-attack. Instantaneous and mean velocity profiles were obtained using total and static pressure at 35 vertically aligned points behind the aerofoil via two similar rakes. The rakes were located at a distance of 1.5 chord length behind the model. An estimation of the real time and average variations of the linear momentum deficit during the oscillation cycle is obtained and has been compared with the corresponding static data. The results...

    , Article Physics of Fluids ; Volume 32, Issue 6 , 25 June , 2020 Jamali, M ; Sehat, H ; Sharif University of Technology
American Institute of Physics Inc  2020
    Abstract
This paper quantitatively investigates the role of flexibility of blade-like stems and, in particular, the occurrence of stem resonance on lateral dispersion in emergent aquatic canopies. Two sets of experiments are presented: single-stem and canopy tests. In the first set, the flow around single blade-like flexible model stems and the proximity to a resonant state are studied. Wake areas behind four model stems with distinct flexibilities are measured by particle image velocimetry for stem Reynolds numbers between 350 and 850. A single flexible emergent stem bends and oscillates in in-line and cross-flow directions due to periodic forcing associated with the vortex shedding. The plant...

    Abstract
An intensive experimental work was conducted to investigate variations of the wall pressure time history at different locations during the test of a fighter aircraft model in a sinusoidal pitching motion. The model used in this research was a standard dynamics model known as SDM. Dynamic data were taken at various combinations of reduced frequencies, mean angles of attack and oscillation amplitudes. Time variations of the static pressure at several locations on the wind tunnel wall have been recorded using sensitive pressure transducers. The results show that the wall pressure oscillation is highly affected by the model motion and varies with the free stream Mach number, oscillation...

    Abstract
Extensive wind tunnel tests have been conducted to investigate the unsteady flow field over and behind a 2D model of a 660 kW wind turbine blade section in pitching motion. The surface pressure and wake dynamic pressure variation at a distance of 1.5 chord length from trailing edge were measured by pressure transducers during several oscillating cycles at 3 reduced frequencies and oscillating amplitudes. Moreover, form drag and linear momentum deficit are extracted and compared at various conditions. The results show that the wake velocity field and surface pressure of the model have similar behavior before and after the airfoil beyond the static stall angle of attack. In addition, the...

    , Article Laser and Particle Beams ; Volume 33, Issue 3 , 2015 , Pages 397-403 ; 02630346 (ISSN) Zare, S ; Rezaee, S ; Yazdani, E ; Anvari, A ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Cambridge University Press  2015
    Abstract
Propagation of Gaussian X-ray laser beam is presented in collisional quantum plasma and the beam width oscillation is studied along the propagation direction. It is noticed that due to energy absorption in collisional plasma, the laser energy drops to an amount less than the critical value of the self-focusing effect and consequently, the laser beam defocuses. It is found that the oscillation amplitude of the laser spot size enhances while passing through collisional plasma. For the greater values of collision frequency, the beam width oscillates with higher amplitude and defocuses in a shallower plasma depth. Also, it is realized that in a dense plasma environment, the laser self-focusing...

    Abstract
Flow around a 2D circular cylinder with attached swinging thin splitter plates is numerically investigated. The ratio of the plates’ length to the cylinder diameter is 1 ([Formula presented]=1) where L is the Plates’ length and D is the cylinder diameter. The plates are attached at ±55 degrees (trigonometric angle) downstream and are forced to oscillate at different ratios of the natural vortex shedding frequencies with magnitudes of FR=0.75,1,1.25,1.5 and 2. The oscillation amplitude “α” as the other main variable ranges from 10 to 18 degrees. Two-dimensional simulations are carried out at the Reynolds number 100, and then extended to higher Reynolds number of 200. The results show that in...

Analytical approach to dynamic and vibration analysis of a spherical ball under contact stress

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , 2011 , Pages 1306-1312 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Aram, A ; Hosseinzadeh, A ; Foumani, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a nonlinear model to illustrate the effect of contact stress in the vibration behavior of mechanical components, especially rotating systems. The problem is considered in the case of the vertical vibration of a sphere on a plate. The Hertzian contact theory is used to obtain the relationship between contact force and the deflection of the mass center of the sphere. Modeling the system by a mass and a nonlinear spring, the vibration equation of the mass center of the sphere is derived. The method of LindstedtPoincar is implemented to solve the equation of motion, and obtain vibration characteristics under a compressive preload. The dependency of frequency on several...
