    Abstract
In vivo dose-dependent effects of nanoscale graphene oxide (NGO) sheets on reproduction capability of Balb/C mice were investigated. Biodistribution study of the NGO sheets (intravenously injected into male mice at dose of ∼2000 μg/mL or 4 mg/kg of body weight) showed a high graphene uptake in testis. Hence, in vivo effects of the NGO sheets on important characteristics of spermatozoa (including their viability, morphology, kinetics, DNA damage and chromosomal aberration) were evaluated. Significant in vivo effects was found at the injected concentrations ≥200 μg/mL after (e.g., ∼45% reduction in sperm viability and motility at 2000 μg/mL). Observation of remarkable DNA fragmentations and...

Simple and rapid detection of L-dopa based on in situ formation of polylevodopa nanoparticles

    , Article Sensors and Actuators, B: Chemical ; Volume 243 , 2017 , Pages 715-720 ; 09254005 (ISSN) Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Moslehipour, A ; Bigdeli, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Levodopa [L-3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, or L-DOPA] is an important neurotransmitter used for the treatment of neural disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Abnormal L-Dopa concentrations in biological fluids can be used for the evaluation of such diseases. In this work, a rapid and sensitive method for L-DOPA detection has been reported which is based on in situ formation of polylevodopa nanoparticles. Under alkaline conditions, L-DOPA is spontaneously oxidized to its quinone derivative and shows fluorescence properties. The fluorescence signal of the oxidation product has been monitored and used for the determination of L-DOPA in the presence of dopamine, uric acid, ascorbic acid and other...

Application of NaYF4:Yb/Er/Tm UCNPs in Array-Based Sensing of Neurotransmitters: From a Single Particle to a Multichannel Sensor Array

    Abstract
A novel multichannel sensor array has been designed using a single, yet multiemissive lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP). The energy levels of lanthanide ions gave rise to several emission bands which were exploited as individual sensor elements for the recognition of four important neurotransmitters (NTs): dopamine, norepinephrine, levodopa, and serotonin. At alkaline conditions, the oxidation products of these NTs quenched the fluorescence emissions of UCNPs with different quenching degrees. The resulting fingerprint multichannel emission profiles from NaYF4:Yb/Er/Tm UCNPs allowed the discrimination of NTs with excellent accuracy. The recognition was further verified in...

Identification of catecholamine neurotransmitters using fluorescence sensor array

    , Article Analytica Chimica Acta ; Volume 917 , April , 2016 , Pages 85–92 ; 00032670 (ISSN) Ghasemi, F ; Hormozi Nezhad, M. R ; Mahmoudi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A nano-based sensor array has been developed for identification and discrimination of catecholamine neurotransmitters based on optical properties of their oxidation products under alkaline conditions. To produce distinct fluorescence response patterns for individual catecholamine, quenching of thioglycolic acid functionalized cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots, by oxidation products, were employed along with the variation of fluorescence spectra of oxidation products. The spectral changes were analyzed with hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) to identify catecholamine patterns. The proposed sensor could efficiently discriminate the individual...

Anodic behavior of clioquinol at a glassy carbon electrode

    Abstract
Clioquinol is an antifungal, antiprotozoal and an Alzheimer's disease drug with cytotoxic activity toward human cancer cells. The electrochemical behavior of clioquinol and its oxidation product was studied using cyclic, differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry over a wide pH range on a glassy carbon electrode. The results revealed that the oxidation of clioquinol is an irreversible pH-dependent process that proceeds with the transfer of one electron and one proton in an adsorption-controlled mechanism and results in the formation of a main oxidation product, which adsorbs very strongly on the glassy carbon surface. The charge transfer coefficient was calculated as 0.64. The adsorbed...
