    Abstract
'Three-link-model' Exergoeconomic methodology optimises the design and operability of a system. Contrary to traditional iterative Exergoeconomic optimisation methods, a reversed method is used, since assumptions considered by Tsatsaronis for calculating cost-optimal Exergetic efficiency and relative cost difference, were not applicable, new assumptions have been adopted. In a case study applied to Mazandaran paper industry, iterative reversed optimisation results have been compared with evolutionary programming results. Replacement of Pressure Valve and Direct Cyclone Contact Evaporation is proposed, while by selection of the optimum decision variable, recoverable black liquor is increased...

Exergoeconomic Composite Curves-from theory to practice

    , Article 11th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, WMSCI 2007, Jointly with the 13th International Conference on Information Systems Analysis and Synthesis, ISAS 2007, Orlando, FL, 8 July 2007 through 11 July 2007 ; Volume 5 , 2007 , Pages 332-337 ; 1934272191 (ISBN); 9781934272190 (ISBN) Fani, M ; Farhanieh, B ; Mozafari, A. Abstract
Exergoeconomic Composite Curves (EECC) - a synergy of Exergoeconomic and Composite Curves of Pinch Analysis is a novel method and propounded for the first time in this Paper. This is the first attempt to represent investment and annual operating and maintenance costs in addition to Exergy in a graphical form similar to Composite Curves. In this Paper a simplified methodology that represents the Exergy of chemical units of a process in a graphical form and preliminary investment strategy is developed for use with the EECC. The object has therefore been to study the possibilities to save money in Northern Pulp and Paper Mill, an Iranian mill with a capacity of 600 tons/day

Coordination of process integration and exergoeconomic methodology for analysis and optimization of a pulp and paper mill

    Abstract
By simultaneously applying pinch technology and the exergoeconomic method to a complex process system, beneficial and energy-efficient measures are identified. The "three-link-model" exergoeconomic methodology optimizes the design and operability of a system. In this work, contrary to traditional exergoeconomic methods, a reversed method is used. The approach proposed for the optimization of such a complex system is to iteratively optimize subsystems. Since the reversed exergoeconomic method is used, assumptions considered by Tsatsaronis (based on four assumptions for calculating the cost-optimal exergetic efficiency and relative cost difference) are not applicable and new assumptions are to...

Minimization of Wet End disturbances during web breaks using online LAV estimation

    , Article Control Engineering Practice ; Volume 18, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 433-447 ; 09670661 (ISSN) Nobakhti, A ; Wang, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
During a Wet End break, the loss of paper feed through the paper machine causes loss of sensory information and the remaining parts of the process are operated in open-loop. This causes the stock composition in the Headbox to deviate substantially from the nominal specifications, causing paper quality (after start up) and paper machine runability issues. In this work, the Base Sheet Ash measurement of the scanner is estimated using a least absolute value (LAV) model which can then be used for control of the chalk valve during the breaks to keep the Headbox Ash within specified limits. The model is computed using a very fast optimization algorithm which is able to compute the LAV solution...

Process integration of pulp and paper mill based on the new pinch technology and dynamic simulation for saving energy

    , Article 9th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, WMSCI 2005, Orlando, FL, 10 July 2005 through 13 July 2005 ; Volume 9 , 2005 , Pages 363-367 ; 9806560612 (ISBN); 9789806560611 (ISBN) Fani, M ; Farhanieh, B ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Optimization methods for process integration of industrial networks presented so far have dealt with grass-root situation. For retrofit ones, the actual design of the existing heat exchanger network must be taken into account. Berntsson and Stromberg (1996) developed new Composite Curves for use in a targeting and options scanning in retrofitting. The aim of this development has been to create Pinch Technology based methods, with which the general problems with process integration in Retrofit can be treated. New Pinch Technology based curves for retrofitting of heat exchanger networks have provided a graphical representation of existing HEN, including heaters and utility levels, from which...

Particle removal optimization in rotating dissolved air flotation used in paper-recycling wastewater treatment

    Abstract
Rotating dissolved air flotation (RDAF) has been utilized for several decades in paper-recycling wastewater treatment; however, it has rarely been addressed in the literature, which makes research into this system challenging and complicated. However, in this work, a full-scale industrial wastewater treatment system for a paper-recycling mill in Mazandaran province, Iran, was evaluated. Experiments indicated that under the same wastewater and chemical conditions, there are differences in the removal efficiencies. This finding was investigated by conducting simulation in ANSYS CFX R18.0 and experimentation simultaneously. Thus, the main purpose of this research was to optimize the operation...
