Development of Optimal Configuration, Modeling and Control of Large Scale PV (PHOTOVOLTAIC) Parks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Environmental problems as well as energy sustainability concerns, have forced many countries to provide part of their energy from Renewable Resources (RR). Solar energy has gained a lot of attention because of the huge energy stored in the sun and its availability. Since Energy conversion via PV panels causes less environmental problems, today, hundreds of large-scale PV parks are installed and planned worldwide. Since a single PV panel provides only up to 400 Watts of power, a PV park contains a large number of PV panels. Augmenting this large number of PV panels and converting their output power to AC using DC/DC and DC/AC converters should be in a form that not only the investment cost is...

Abstract
Tehran, the capital of Iran, is one of the most polluted cities in the Middle East. However, there is no clear evidence of the effects of Tehran green spaces on reducing air pollution because there are still challenges to application of vegetation for improving air quality. The current study investigates the effects of a large volume of green space with 275 ha area in the vicinity of major highways on nearby air quality. Similar environments are often seen in many cities around the world. A computational fluid dynamics model containing aerodynamics and deposition effects of vegetation was used to simulate pollutant dispersion for eight wind directions and three different foliage densities....
Optimal allocation of PHEV parking lots to minimize distribution system losses
, Article IEEE Eindhoven PowerTech, PowerTech 2015 ; 2015 ; 9781479976935 (ISBN) ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Rastegar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
To tackle the air pollution issues, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are proposed as an appropriate solution. Charging a large amount of PHEV batteries, if not controlled, would have negative impacts on the distribution system. The control process of charging of these vehicles can be centralized in parking lots that may provide a chance for better coordination than the individual charging in houses. In this paper, an optimization-based approach is proposed to determine the optimum PHEV parking capacities in candidate nodes of the distribution system. In so doing, a profile for charging and discharging of PHEVs is developed in order to flatten the network load profile. Then, this...

Abstract
One of the methods for providing private parking is to use the mechanized parking within neighborhoods or housing units that are common in today's world. But, unfortunately, due to lack of appropriate rules and technical, administrative and legal guidelines, this approach has not yet been used. Hence the necessity of investigating and formulating laws, programs and specific criteria for mechanized private parking in terms of legal, technical, traffic, urbanization aspects (location, neighborhood, architecture, building standards and national regulations, economic aspects, etc.) have been a motivation for conducting this study. In this research, after studying and investigating previous...
Design and Comparison of Reinforced and Pre-Stressed Interior Span Slabs for Concrete Parking Structures
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the growth of population and the increasing number of auto-manufacturing plants in the world, governments have to find ways to decrease traffic, environmental pollution, etc. Providing parking lots is another problem with which we have to deal. It seems that designing and building multi-storey reinforced concrete parking structures is one of the ways to resolve this problem. According to complex behavior of concrete in compression and tension, it was so important to use an appropriate behavior model. In this research damage concept is used instead of crack concept which could models concrete behavior appropriately which causes acceptable results. According to uni-axial, bi-axial and...

Abstract
Electric spring (ES) as a novel concept in power electronics has been developed for the purpose of dealing with demand-side management. In this paper, to conquer the challenges imposed by intermittent nature of renewable energy sources (RESs) and other uncertainties for constructing a secure modern microgrid (MG), the hybrid distributed operation of ESs and electric vehicles (EVs) parking lot is suggested. The proposed approach is implemented in the context of a hybrid stochastic/robust optimization (HSRO) problem, where the stochastic programming based on unscented transformation (UT) method models the uncertainties associated with load, energy price, RESs, and availability of MG equipment....
Evaluation of the Performance of Passive TMDs in Damage Reduction of 2-D Concrete Structures
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
Abstract
The detuning of the structures equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) caused by their nonlinear behavior under strong ground motions is a real concern in their practical application. This thesis presents a feasibility study on the effectiveness of TMDs in reducing the seismic response and the resulting structural damage of reinforced concrete structures under intense ground motion. A number of 2-D concrete moment resisting frames with different numbers of stories are considered. TMDs are used as a mean to protect these structural models against ground excitation. The mass of TMDs are varied from 1% to 5% of the first effective modal mass of the structural models. IDARC 2-D program is used...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
Abstract
Up to now, many seismic design methods and construction technologies have been investigated to reduce the seismic responses of bridges, buildings and potentially vulnerable structures. [1] Introducing a new effective systems aim to control of vibration caused by earthquake on the structures will be useful. This system is based on repelling of imposed force to the structures with tuned mass dampers (TMDs), to gain minimum damage. The detuning of the structures by equipped with TMDs resulted from nonlinear behavior due to dynamic loads such as strong ground motions are real concern in the practical applications. The application of TMDs, as expected, can reduce the deformation of the...

Important Thermodynamic and Geometric Parameters of Smoke Management Systems for Stairwells: A Case Study
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sani, Mahdi (Supervisor) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Smoke is the largest cause of fire related deaths. A smoke control system is an engineered system that modifies smoke movement for the protection of building occupants, firefighters and properties. Unfortunately, in case of fire, stairwells and elevators are frequently filled with smoke, preventing effective evacuation. Many smoke control systems use mechanical fans to control smoke by providing positive pressure at strategic locations. Pressure difference across a barrier can control smoke movement by preventing smoke on the low-pressure side of the barrier from migrating to the high-pressure side. Building designers use codes and rules of thumb to design their building against fire....

Abstract
This chapter investigates implementation of some parking lots for a plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) aggregator to participate in energy market. Herein, behaviors of the PEVs’ drivers regarding their cooperation with the aggregator with respect to the introduced incentive (value of discount on charging fee of PEVs) are modeled. The considered incentive includes the value of discount on the charging fee of PEVs’ batteries. In addition, the capability of parking lots for transacting electrical energy is modeled based on the hourly arrival/departure time of PEVs to/from the parking lots and the hourly state of charge (SOC) of PEVs’ batteries. Also, the degradation of PEVs’ batteries is modeled...

Abstract
This paper investigates the role of parking lots in improving the reliability of renewable-based distribution systems, through provision of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programs during outage events. In this regard, municipal parking decks are viewed as distributed energy storage systems and the amount of available energy from these units in random contingency events is probabilistically modeled for reliability studies. Appropriate stochastic models are also introduced to capture the volatility and intermittency of renewable sources. Moreover, it is discussed that how the adopted outage management scheme (OMS) in contingency events can affect the reliability level of customers. In response, several...
