    Abstract
An aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and potassium phosphate (K2HPO4) was used for partitioning and partial purification of alkaline protease produced by Bacillus licheniformis ATCC 21424. The effect of PEG molar mass, pH and concentration of NaCl salt addition on partition coefficient, yield and purification factor (PF) for ATPS were studied. The highest partition coefficient (5.3) was achieved in an ATPS of 25% (w/w) PEG 10,000 (g/mol) and 10% (w/w) NaCl at pH 9. Cation and anion exchange chromatography was employed for purification of alkaline protease from protein mixture and the yield and PF for enzyme fractions were obtained to make a comparison...

    Abstract
In this research, partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase was investigated in polymer-salt aqueous two-phase systems containing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different molecular weights such as 4000, 6000 and 10,000 and Na2SO4 or KH2PO4. The experimental partition coefficients were measured at T = (298.5, 301.5, 303.5, 305.5 and 308) K. The results showed that the concentration of salt in feed had more effect on partition coefficients of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase in aqueous two-phase systems than the concentration of polymer in initial feed. Also, the results indicated that temperature had a small effect on partitioning of β-amylase and amyloglucosidase enzymes. The partition...

    Abstract
The extraction and purification of lipids from the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris have been investigated. First, a mixture of hexane and ethanol was used to extract lipids from the algal biomass. Ultrasonication was employed to disrupt the cell wall and increase the extraction performance. Under these conditions, over 90% of the fatty acids in the biomass were extracted. Second, a biphasic system was formed by adding water and hexane to the extracted crude oil. In this way, fatty acids were mainly distributed in the organic phase (mostly hexane and ethanol) while most of the contaminants remained in the aqueous phase (mostly water and ethanol). Equilibrium distribution data between the phases...

    Abstract
Amino acids partitioning including phenylalanine, glutamic acid, and tryptophan in aqueous and ionic liquid phases at temperature of 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure were measured. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide used in this work can produce two phases with water immediately. The effect of aqueous solution pH on amino acids partitioning was studied and revealed that amino acid partitioning coefficient was decreased with increasing pH. This phenomenon pertains to the electrostatic interaction between cations of amino acid and the anions of ionic liquid which is decreased when pH increases. Considering the effect of pH, liquid-liquid equilibrium data of amino...

    Abstract
Two series of heat-resistant 25Cr-35Ni-Nb stainless steels with tungsten addition and Nb/C ratio of ≈2.6 and 3.9 were directionally solidified under two cooling rates of 23–6 °C s−1, respectively. EDS analysis, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) tests were carried out to show that tungsten as a carbide phase nucleant promoted weak coupled eutectic growth of γ/ M7C3 and decreased the lamellar eutectic colonies. Substantial negative segregation of Ni and Fe and positive segregation of Nb and Cr in tungsten-bearing alloys stimulated the γ/M23C6 reaction and the M23C6 possessed a dendritic...

Modeling of aqueous biomolecules using a new free-volume group contribution model

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 48, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 4109-4118 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, a new group contribution model is suggested for obtaining the thermodynamic properties of biomolecules in aqueous solutions. Accordingly, a Freed-FV model has been applied for the combinatorial free-volume term. The activity coefficients, solubilities, densities, and vapor pressures of amino acids and simple peptides in aqueous solutions were correlated, using the proposed group contribution model. Group interaction parameters of the proposed model were obtained by use of experimental data from amino acids available in the literature. The results demonstrate that the group contribution model can accurately correlate activity coefficient, solubility, density, and vapor...

    Abstract
The presence of dyes as pollutants in wastewater sources from textile industries can cause significant health issues if they are not adequately treated. Dye adsorption to entrap contaminants in nanoparticle pores has created considerable attention in recent years due to the environmental concerns occurring as a result of spillage of dyes in water bodies. In efforts to understand adsorption capability UiO-66, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed and examined for the separation of four pollutant dyes containing methyl red (MR), methyl orange (MO), malachite green (MG), and methylene blue (MB), which are widely used in textile industries. The adsorbent structural stability in water,...

    , Article Particulate Science and Technology ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 67-73 ; 02726351 (ISSN) Pazuki, G. R ; Taghikhani, V ; Vossoughi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, an artificial neural network model was used to obtain the partition coefficients of biomolecules in polymer-polymer aqueous two-phase systems. In the artificial neural network, the partition coefficient of a biomolecule depends on the difference between concentrations of poly (ethylene glycol), dextran in the top and bottom phases, temperature and molecular weights of poly (ethylene glycol), dextran, and the biomolecule. The network topology is optimized and the (6-1-1) architecture is found using optimization of an objective function with sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method for 450 experimental data points. The results obtained from the neural network of the...

    Abstract
In this paper, the dissolution and mobilization of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) blobs in the Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) process were upscaled using dynamic pore network modeling (PNM) of three-dimensional and unstructured networks. We considered corner flow and micro-flow mechanisms including snap-off and piston-like movement for two-phase flow. Moreover, NAPL entrapment and remobilization were evaluated using force analysis to develop the capillary desaturation curve (CDC) and predict the onset of remobilization. The corner diffusion mechanism was also applied in the modeling of interphase mass transfer to represent NAPL dissolution as the dominant mass transfer...

    Abstract
A headspace solid-phase dynamic extraction (HS-SPDE) technique was developed by the use of polypyrrole (PPy) sorbent, electropolymerized inside the surface of a needle, as a possible alternative to solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Thermal desorption was subsequently, employed to transfer the extracted analytes into the injection port of a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The PPy sorbent including polypyrrole-dodecyl sulfate (PPy-DS) was deposited on the interior surface of a stainless steel needle from the corresponding aqueous electrolyte by applying a constant deposition potential. The homogeneity and the porous surface structure of the coating were examined using the...
