    Abstract
An up-to-date progress of the international laser research and development is given in this article. The number of scientific publications and filed patents are considered as a figure of merit and based on these numbers the growth pace and important aspects are investigated. We have used the Science Finder Scholar search engine, which indexes more than 4000 journals, in different languages, and represents most significant published materials in laser science and engineering. The growth of the laser and related fields are described in terms of resulting scientific publications for the period of 1990-2003. The share of top nations in scientific publications, and in particular laser...

National laser research progress in context of international developments

    , Article Journal of Applied Sciences ; Volume 8, Issue 17 , 2008 , Pages 2958-2966 ; 18125654 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This study presents an up to date progress of the national and international laser research and developments. The number of scientific publications and accepted patents are considered as a figure of merit and based on these numbers the growth pace for the period of 1990-2003 is investigated. The share of top nations in scientific publications and in particular laser publications in term of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is presented. Four countries including the USA, Japan, Germany and China have a laser publication contribution of 58.9% while the rest of the world including (189) countries contribute 41.1%. However, for the case of accepted patents, which are the more important factor,...

A synergistic program between engineering and business schools towards medical technology commercialization

    , Article IEEE TENSYMP 2014 - 2014 IEEE Region 10 Symposium ; 14- 16 April , 2014 , pp. 456-461 ; ISBN: 9781479920280 Zahedi, E ; Gan, K. B ; Chellappan, K ; Ali, M. A. M ; Mustafa, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Governments in developing countries have invested in institutions of higher learning in order to develop homegrown, high technology products. Among these, the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), recognized as a Research University, is actively involved in projects related to medical technology through its various faculties. The net result of these activities is impressing from the point of view of patents and publications, but unfortunately not yet in terms of commercialization. This paper starts by presenting the main obstacles towards the objective of bringing a laboratory prototype to the market in the context of Malaysia. Then, a framework is presented...

Carbon nanotube research developments in terms of published papers and patents, synthesis and production

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 6 , December , 2012 , Pages 2012-2022 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Progress of carbon nanotube (CNT) research and development in terms of published papers and patents is reported. Developments concerning CNT structures, synthesis, and major parameters, in terms of the published documents are surveyed. Publication growth of CNTs and related fields are analyzed for the period of 2000-2010. From the explored search term, "carbon nanotubes", the total number of papers containing the CNT concept is 52,224, and for patents is 5,746, with a patent/paper ratio of 0.11. For CNT research in the given period, an annual increase of 8.09% for paper and 8.68% for patents are resulted. Published papers for CNT, CVD and CCVD synthesis parameters for the period of 2000-2010...

Quantification of technological progress in greenhouse gas (GHG) capture and mitigation using patent data

    , Article Energy and Environmental Science ; Volume 12, Issue 9 , 2019 , Pages 2789-2805 ; 17545692 (ISSN) Sharifzadeh, M ; Triulzi, G ; Magee, C. L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Royal Society of Chemistry  2019
    Abstract
Greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources are believed to be the main cause of global warming and climate change. Furthermore, fossil fuels are forecasted to remain the dominant source of energy in the near future. Therefore, capture and sequestration of greenhouse gases and in particular carbon dioxide is likely to be a major pathway toward environmental protection and energy sustainability. Such clarity has stimulated an intense and diverse range of research into various capture and mitigation technologies, which race with global warming in real-time. Quantification of the performance improvement rates of these technologies can inform decision-makers' long-term investment...

Does knowledge base complexity affect spatial patterns of innovation? An empirical analysis in the upstream petroleum industry

    , Article Technological Forecasting and Social Change ; Volume 143 , 2019 , Pages 273-288 ; 00401625 (ISSN) Maleki, A ; Rosiello, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Inc  2019
    Abstract
Using network analysis, we investigate if an industry's complex and integrated knowledge base leads to a higher spatial concentration (or dispersal)of innovative activities. This is important because the extant literature provides competing claims about how knowledge base complexity impacts on the spatial distribution of industrial innovation. To help empirically resolve this issue, we draw on longitudinal data (1970–2010)on the upstream petroleum industry and build indexes of entropy and complexity to render knowledge base dynamics, assess the spatial concentration of innovation, and study industry structural transformations. We first find a correlation – once a crucial distinction between...
