Flare Gas Recovery and Transforming Them into Petrochemicals

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khodabandeh Jahromi, Maryam (Author) ; Sattari, Sourena (Supervisor)
    Abstract
By combustion, waste toxic, flammable and corrosive materials are changed to less inviromental problems by combustion. It also creats environmental problems (the most serios problem is caused by burning gases), as well as economic resources are wasted. So several ways was investigated to reduce combustion gases. Mini-methanol plant is one of varios possible ways that can convert these gases in to methanol. So methanol plant was simulated and then pinch analysis was performed on the simulated plant. Performing of pinch analysis caused 94.5 percent and 25 percent reduction in amaunt of hot and cold utility respectively. Before and after pinch analysis, the exergy analysis was performed on...

    , Article Renewable Energy ; 2018 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Fakouriyan, S ; Saboohi, Y ; Fathi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
This paper addresses a low complexity and high efficient cooling system applicable on photovoltaic (PV) system leading to enhance electrical efficiency and provide preheated water. The developed system consists of a photovoltaic panel, a cooling water system establishing a uniform surface temperature, and a solar water heater. According to the proposed system characteristics, the setup is constructed based on a single mono-crystalline solar panel to absorb more solar radiation intensity and generate more electrical energy per area in compare to a poly-crystalline panel. The preheated water produced by absorbed heat from the photovoltaic is conducted to a solar water heater to satisfy...

Technical and Economical Feasibility Study of Using Flare Gas for Converting to Other Products in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Marouf Mashat, Azadeh (Author) ; Sattari, Sourena (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Increasing trend of gas flaring over oil fields and gas process systems in Iran not only causes several environmental problems, but makes the economical resources useless as well. Considering the high amount of flaring and old facilities, one of the best solutions is the recovery of the flare gas in Iran. It seems that collecting the flare gas is not possible in different sectors. Therefore, using a plant for converting flare gas to other products must be logical. In this project, the feasibility study of converting flare gas to other products is studied. For this reason, a methanol plant is simulated; whose input feed is the content of flare gas of the South of Iran (Marun and Siri)....

Comparative thermoeconomic analysis of geothermal energy recovery via super/transcritical CO2 and subcritical organic Rankine cycles

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 251 , 2022 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Habibollahzade, A ; Petersen, K. J ; Aliahmadi, M ; Fakhari, I ; Brinkerhoff, J. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
Transcritical-CO2, supercritical-CO2, and organic Rankine cycles are numerically investigated and compared in simple Rankine, Rankine with internal heat exchanger, and regenerative Rankine configurations to assess their thermodynamic and thermoeconomic performance indicators. Subsequently, the systems are optimized using a multi-objective optimization method. Pareto optimal solutions are provided to present the trade-off between thermodynamic and thermoeconomic indicators. In addition, scatter plots of decision variables are presented to ascertain the optimal operating range of input variables. The results show that transcritical-CO2 systems can generate the highest power. The levelized cost...

A techno-economic analysis of geothermal ejector cooling system

    , Article Energy ; Volume 193 , 15 February , 2020 Habibi, M ; Aligolzadeh, F ; Hakkaki Fard, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Ground-coupled ejector cooling (GCEC) systems have been introduced to solve the air-coupled ejector cooling (ACEC) systems problems. To date, no research study is dedicated to compare the GCEC and the ACEC systems and determine the relative payback period of the GCEC system vs. the ACEC system. Furthermore, almost all the previous studies simulated the GCEC systems by elementary models. Therefore, a comprehensive simulation is conducted to assess the techno-economic performance of a GCEC system. The model consists of the ejector and the borehole heat exchanger submodels. The first section of the results compares the ACEC system and the GCEC system during a cooling season. The seasonal...

Power Flow Control and Power Quality Enhancement in Grid-Connected Microgrid with Back-to-Back Converter

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sekhavatmanesh, Hossein (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A microgrid system consists of some distributed generators (DGs) and local loads which can operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. An islanded mode of operation is required when the grid voltage deteriorates and its power quality drops. This islanding operation can be attained by opening grid-side switches or by using back-to-back (b-to-b) converters. Due to the increase of highly sensitive loads and to have better power control and higher power quality, the use of back-to-back converters has recently attracted interests among researchers. However, the major drawback of this solution is the cost of a b-to-b converter. Therefore the aim of this project is to gain some...

What is energy efficiency and emission reduction potential in the Iranian petrochemical industry?

    , Article International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control ; Volume 12 , 2013 , Pages 460-471 ; 17505836 (ISSN) Mohammadi, A ; Soltanieh, M ; Abbaspour, M ; Atabi, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this study, the prospects of energy efficiency potential, clean development mechanism (CDM) and carbon income up to and beyond 2012 are investigated in the petrochemical industries of Iran as a major oil-producing country. This paper is to address four questions of: (1) the GHGs emission in Iranian petrochemical complexes, (2) the most energy-consuming processes, (3) units with the highest energy efficiency potentials and (4) potentials of CDM or similar carbon projects based on post-2012 scenarios. The petrochemical processes are investigated in two categories of non-polymeric and polymeric productions. Based on capital expenditure, economic saving, simple payback period, CO2 equivalent...

    Abstract
Hydrogen as an energy carrier can play a significant role in reducing environmental emissions if it is produced from renewable energy resources. This research aims to assess hydrogen production from wind energy considering environmental, economic, and technical aspect for the East Azerbaijan province of Iran. The economic assessment is performed by calculation of payback period, levelized cost of hydrogen, and levelized cost of electricity. Since uncertainty in the power output of wind turbines may affect the payback period, all calculations are performed for four different turbine degradation rates. While it is common in the literature to choose the wind turbine based on a single criterion,...
