    Abstract
The disposal of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as persistent organic pollutants from the environment has been normally performed by isolation from soil or water because of their biological activity and toxic potential. In the present investigation, catalytic hydrodehalogenation was used to detoxify PCBs-contaminated transformer oil. All reactions were directed on an oil containing 11.09 wt% of PCBs utilizing palladium supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd/MWCNTs). The amount of hexa-chlorine homologues reduced considerably from 5.07% to less than 800 ppm utilizing HDC at the atmosphere of argon. Moreover, the amounts of long half-lives and bioaccumulative congener of PCB 153...

    Abstract
This research aims to expand the body of information that researchers require before starting electronic waste (E-waste) recovery experiments. With this purpose, the basic metal contents, alkalinity, polymer components, iron magnetic separation, metal recovery priority and economic values of different types of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) were investigated. The selected wastes were computer PCBs (CPCBs), CPCBs with wires, mobile phone PCBs (MPPCBs), television PCBs (TVPCBs), fax machine PCBs (FPCBs), copy machine PCBs (COPCBs) and central processing units (CPUs). These E-wastes were prepared in the three fraction sizes of F1<1 mm, 1 < F2<3 mm, and 3 < F3<8 mm to evaluate the metal...

    Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) cause many significant ecological problems because of their low degradability, high harmfulness, and solid bioaccumulation. Two bacterial strains were isolated from soil that had been polluted with electrical transformer liquid for more than 40 years. The isolates were distinguished as Lysinibacillus macrolides DSM54Tand Bacillus firmus NBRC15306Tthrough 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. This is the primary report of an agent of the genus Bacillus firmus equipped for the removal of PCBs. The strains could develop broadly on 2-Chlorobiphenyl and 2,4-dichlorobiphenyl. GC/MS analysis of individual congeners revealed up to 80% degradation of the xenobiotics in 96h,...

Finding maximum disjoint set of boundary rectangles with application to PCB routing

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems ; Volume 36, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 412-420 ; 02780070 (ISSN) Ahmadinejad, A ; Zarrabi Zadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Motivated by the bus escape routing problem in printed circuit boards (PCBs), we study the following optimization problem: given a set of rectangles attached to the boundary of a rectangular region, find a subset of nonoverlapping rectangles with maximum total weight. We present an efficient algorithm that solves this problem optimally in O(n4) time, where n is the number of rectangles in the input instance. This improves over the best previous O(n6) -time algorithm available for the problem. We also present two efficient approximation algorithms for the problem that find near-optimal solutions with guaranteed approximation factors. The first algorithm finds a 2-approximate solution in O(n2)...

Predicting delamination in multilayer composite circuit boards with bonded microelectronic components

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; 2017 ; 00137944 (ISSN) Akbari, S ; Nourani, A ; Spelt, J. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2017
    Abstract
The present work developed a mixed-mode cohesive zone model (CZM) with a mode I failure criterion to predict the delamination bending loads of multilayer, composite printed circuit boards (PCBs) assembled with soldered ball grid array (BGA) components that were reinforced with an underfill epoxy adhesive. Two different delamination modes were observed in these microelectronic assemblies: delamination at the interface between the solder mask and the first conducting layer of the PCB, and PCB subsurface delamination at the interface between the epoxy and glass fibers of one of the prepreg layers. The cohesive parameters for each of the two crack paths were obtained from fracture tests of...

Optimal electronic waste combination for maximal recovery of Cu-Ni-Fe by acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

    Abstract
E-waste has become one of the greatest sources of environmental pollution. Bioleaching is known as a new, simple, and environmentally friendly technology for metal recovery requiring low energy input, unskilled labor operations, moderate conditions, and low costs. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is a famous and puissant mesophilic bacterium applied extensively to recover metals from ores and different industrial and municipal wastes. It is necessary to identify the parameters affecting consumers E-waste recycling. Separating and recovering different types of E-waste is impossible for small recycling units. There should be a specific combination of E-waste, enabling the extraction of the...

Ni and Cu recovery by bioleaching from the printed circuit boards of mobile phones in non-conventional medium

    , Article Journal of Environmental Management ; Volume 250 , 2019 ; 03014797 (ISSN) Arshadi, M ; Nili, S ; Yaghmaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press  2019
    Abstract
There is a substantial volume of mobile phone waste every year. Due to the disadvantages of traditional methods, it is necessary to look for biological processes that are more eco-friendly and economical to recover metals from e-waste. Fungi provide large amounts of organic acids and dissolve metals but using sucrose in the medium is not economical. In this paper, the main objective is to find a suitable alternative carbon substrate instead of sucrose for fungi bioleaching of Ni and Cu in printed circuit boards (PCBs) of mobile phones using Penicillium simplicissimum. Four kinds of carbon sources (including sucrose, cheese whey, sugar, and sugar cane molasses) were selected. Also, pH and...

    Abstract
Knowing the metal content of electronic waste is essential to evaluate metal recovery. Lack of a standard method for digestion of precious metals from electronic waste has resulted in difficulty in comparison to the efficiency of recovery. In this study, different precious metal digestion methods and economic value of precious metals from different types of waste printed circuit boards in different fraction sizes, including computer printed circuit boards, mobile phone printed circuit boards, television printed circuit boards, fax machine printed circuit boards, copy machine printed circuit boards, and central processing unit were examined. The optimal digestion method using aqua regia,...
