    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming protocol which presents an implementation of network coding with a new caching mechanism. It employs a push-pull mechanism for sending the video chunks between peers. More specifically, this push-pull mechanism gives priority to the video chunks according to their video layers. The video base layer is transmitted through a pushing mechanism while the enhancement layers employ a pulling mechanism. Moreover, in the network coding algorithm of this protocol, we introduce a caching mechanism to improve the network's performance as well as the video streaming quality. The comprehensive simulations show that the proposed protocol...

    Abstract
Nowadays, deployment of peer-to-peer video streaming systems over wireless mesh networks has attained raising popularity among large number of users around the world. In this paper, we present an efficient peer-to-peer live video streaming architecture over multi-hop wireless mesh networks. In our proposed architecture, we take the physical topology of network into account and based on a distributed distributed locality-aware neighbor selection algorithm in the overlay construction phase, we generate an efficient mesh-based overlay on top of wireless mesh networks. In locality-aware neighbor selection algorithm, instead of choosing randomly, peers find their best neighbors based on their...

Challenges in using peer-to-peer structures in order to design a large-scale web search engine

, Article 13th International Computer Society of Iran Computer Conference on Advances in Computer Science and Engineering, CSICC 2008, Kish Island, 9 March 2008 through 11 March 2008 ; Volume 6 CCIS , 2008 , Pages 461-468 ; 18650929 (ISSN); 3540899847 (ISBN); 9783540899846 (ISBN) Mousavi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
One of the distributed solutions for scaling Web Search Engines (WSEs) may be peer-to-peer (P2P) structures. P2P structures are successfully being used in many systems with lower cost than ordinary distributed solutions. However, the fact that they can also be beneficial for large-scale WSEs is still a controversial subject. In this paper, we introduce challenges in using P2P structures to design a large-scale WSE. Considering different types of P2P systems, we introduce possible P2P models for this purpose. Using some quantitative evaluation, we compare these models from different aspects to find out which one is the best in order to construct a large-scale WSE. Our studies indicate that...

Performance analysis of packet loss recovery policies in P2P video streaming

    , Article International Journal of Internet Protocol Technology ; Vol. 8, issue. 1 , 2014 , p. 44-53 Akbari, B ; Rabiee, H. R ; Ghanbari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Packet loss recovery is an important part of P2P video streaming networks due to inevitable packet loss in today's internet and interdependency of data units in compressed video streams. In addition, the architecture of P2P streaming networks, in which the data delivered to the receivers through chain of peers, can intensify the impact of the internet packet loss on the quality of perceived video at the receivers. FEC and ARQ are the two most important techniques that can be used to overcome the side effect of the internet packet loss in P2P video streaming networks. Based on these two techniques, different packet loss recovery strategies can be applied in different overlay hops of a given...

An ant-based rate allocation algorithm for media streaming in peer to peer networks: Extension to multiple sessions and dynamic networks

    , Article Journal of Network and Computer Applications ; Volume 34, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 327-340 ; 10848045 (ISSN) Goudarzi, H ; Salavati, A. H ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a novel algorithm for rate allocation in media streaming P2P networks where multimedia contents are distributed among network members and streamed toward any requesting peer. The proposed algorithm is based on ant-colony optimization. It is capable of handling network dynamism, which is an inherent property of unstructured P2P networks. Another advantage of our algorithm is its ability to get over uncertainties in network state information, particularly the rate of supplying peers that could happen due to lack of accurate measurements. In addition, the suggested method does not rely on any information about the topology of the network. We have investigated both...

Passive worm and malware detection in peer-to-peer networks

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing, EUC 2010, 11 December 2010 through 13 December 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 561-565 ; 9780769543222 (ISBN) Fahimian, S ; Movahed, A ; Kharrazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Today P2P networks are responsible for a large amount of traffic on the Internet, as many Internet users employ such networks for content distribution. At the same time, P2P networks are vulnerable to security threats such as Internet worms and facilitate their propagation. Internet worms and more generally malware are a major concern to the network security community. There are many different type of worms in the wild, mostly categorized based on how they find and infect their new victims (i.e. active, passive, etc.). In this paper, we investigate a new approach for detecting passive worms and malware in P2P networks based on the popularity of files in the network. As part of our...

Layeredcast - A hybrid peer-to-peer live layered video streaming protocol

    , Article 2010 5th International Symposium on Telecommunications, IST 2010, 4 December 2010 through 6 December 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 663-668 ; 9781424481835 (ISBN) Moshref, M ; Motamedi, R ; Rabiee, H. R ; Khansari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Peer-to-Peer overlay networks are an attractive foundation for video streaming. However, live Peer-to-Peer media streaming systems face many challenges such as bandwidth heterogeneity, node churn, and selfish nodes. Although many tree based and mesh based streaming protocols have been proposed, each has its own drawbacks such as unreliability and unfairness in tree based and long startup delay and complex scheduling in mesh based protocols. In this paper, we propose a new video streaming protocol called LayeredCast main features of which are: 1) Hybrid: Drawbacks of the simple approaches are compensated using a hybrid of mesh and tree overlays. 2) Layered Video: Provides an adaptive scheme...

    Abstract
Today, peer-to-peer networks are become more popular among internet users and more than millions peers share high volume of data from anywhere. Sending and receiving these data increase the network traffics terribly. By improving the performance of these networks not only the efficiency of these networks increase but also the overall performance of the internet augments. To achieve high performance and resilience to failures, a peer can make connections with those other peers that are geographically closer to it. In this paper, we present a novel mechanism for placing peers on the overlay network, which supports locality without increasing network traffic seriously

A Method for Detecting Source of Malwares in P2P File Sharing Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafari Dehkordi, Mohammad (Author) ; Kharrazi, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the extensive use and the growing popularity of file sharing in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, the distribution of copyrighted files and the propagation of malwares have also increased. The increasing growth of these crimes multiplies the necessity of forensic investigation in order to detect the offenders. The yet proposed methods have sought to gather some proofs for forensic investigation by the application of some changes in clients’ programs and a constant monitoring of the network. These methods, however, have some limitations which have rendered useless the results of their application in real environments. Moreover, the important issues like the detection of the file source have...

Efficient Resource Allocation in Peer-to-Peer Live Streaming Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Emami Namini, Vahhab (Author) ; Khansari, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Akbari, Behzad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Peer-to-peer streaming has developed as a popular application in today’s Internetinfrastructure. In a typical peer-to-peer live streaming system, publishers provide the streaming content and the interested peers receive and deliver data in a distributed manner and also apeer structure is created by forming an overlay inside the network. In reality, peers are strategic and there is no motivation to contribute any of their upload bandwidth toward other peers. To address this issue, we proposed a simple arcade algorithm that makes an arcade based mechanism for peers to facilitate adjacent peers with more bandwidth to achieve a higher bandwidth themselves.Commensurate with our algorithm, if...

    Abstract
The peer to peer (P2P) file sharing applications have allocated a significant amount of today's Internet traffic. Among various P2P file sharing protocols, BitTorrent is the most common and popular one that attracts monthly a quarter of a billion users from all over the world. Similar to other P2P file sharing protocols, BitTorrent is mostly used for illegal sharing of copiright protected files such as movies, music and TV series. To impede this huge amount of illegal file distributions, anti-P2P companies have arisen to stand against these applications (specially the BitTorrent). To this end, they have begun to fire large-scale Internet attacks against BitTorrent networks. In this paper, we...

    Abstract
Electric distribution network is undergoing fundamental transition from conventional top-down structure to an environment where local prosumers, as transactive agents, are able to form peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trades among themselves. One of the challenges in such networks is allocating the incurred losses to the peers of the transactive market through a transparent and fair framework. In this article, it is demonstrated that the existing methods of loss allocation may cause a cross-subsidization problem when it comes to transactive energy systems, and a solution is offered to the problem. Furthermore, a novel transactive market mechanism is proposed which deploys the loss allocated to each...

Applying Network Coding in a Mesh-Based Peer-to-Peer Streaming Network

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ayatollahi Tabatabaei, Hoda (Author) ; Khansari, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rabiei, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The emerging peer-to-peer (P2P) networks become more popular among researchers in different applications such as file sharing, and video streaming. Since various P2P networks provide high performance and scalable interaction among peers, they are very efficient in designing distributed multimedia applications such as live streaming, IPTV, VoIP, and multimedia broadcasting. In order to improve the network throughput and downloading performance of P2P networks for multimedia streaming, network coding is a technique which can be used for these purposes. In this thesis, we propose a peer-to-peer (P2P) video streaming protocol which presents an implementation of network coding technique. The...

    , Article 2011 International Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems, CNDS 2011, 23 February 2011 through 24 February 2011, Tehran ; 2011 , Pages 175-180 ; 9781424491544 (ISBN) Seyyedi, S. M. Y ; Akbari, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
There are two main scalable methods for streaming live video over the Internet: Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks. Though both have their own problems, P2P streaming systems challenge delivering video with constant quality and CDNs approaches require deployment of large number of servers throughout the Internet that is costly. Recently, using hybrid architectures based on both CDN and P2P networks has shown to be an efficient approach for large-scale video distribution over the Internet. This paper is compared the performance of two main hybrid CDN-P2P architectures includes: (i) CDN-P2P unconnected mesh in which independent P2P mesh networks are constructed...

    Bandwidth adapted hierarchical multicast overlay

    , Article Proceedings - 5th International Multi-Conference on Computing in the Global Information Technology, ICCGI 2010, 20 September 2010 through 25 September 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 262-267 ; 9780769541815 (ISBN) Bagheri, M ; Movaghar, A ; Khodaparast, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
As the infrastructure-centric model of peer-to-peer streaming, recent overlay construction schemes compose a hierarchical topology of peers by grouping them into clusters. There is a server in each cluster that receives data from the source and relays it to its cluster members. In this paper, we propose an alternative infrastructure-centric peer-to-peer framework called BAHMO that constructs a hierarchical multicast tree. BAHMO does not utilize server bandwidth and rely only on peer bandwidth for data transfers. It achieves both the stability of the infrastructure-centric model and the bandwidth efficiency of the fully-distributed model. Bandwidth assignment for inter-cluster data transfers...

Tree optimization in overlay multicast based on location and bandwidth

    , Article ICCTD 2009 - 2009 International Conference on Computer Technology and Development, 13 November 2009 through 15 November 2009 ; Volume 2 , 2009 , Pages 46-49 ; 9780769538921 (ISBN) Bagheri, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
One of the main parts of peer-to-peer multicast is the structure of overlay network. Most of the existing works utilize some common parameters for constructing overlay tree. These parameters are bandwidth and delay. The mismatch between current overlay structure and underlying network topology causes severe link stress and then leads to high end to end latency. According to these problems, we propose a new overlay construction algorithm called OLT in this paper that finds the location of peers and tries to connect peers that are as close as possible. OLT exploits a number of heuristic techniques to reach an optimized tree even in case of peer heterogeneity and high churn rate. Our...

A multi-sender multicast algorithm for media streaming on peer-to-peer networks

    , Article Computer Communications ; Volume 30, Issue 10 , July , 2007 , Pages 2191-2200 Firooz, M. H ; Ronasi, K. (Keivan) ; Pakravan, M. R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Nasiri Avanaki, A. (Alireza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Unlike those on Internet, the media providers on P2P networks are ordinary nodes with limited shared resources such as bandwidth. Multi-sender methods are the best existing solutions to video streaming on P2P networks. In this paper, we propose use of a multicast method on the top of an arbitrary multi-sender method so that all requesting peers receive almost the same expected bit-rate. Experimental results, derived from implementation of the proposed algorithm on Pastry P2P network confirm our claim. Another advantage of our method over the existing methods is its scalability with the number of receivers
