    Towards resilient structures

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 2077-2080 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Khaloo, A. R ; Mobini, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A disaster is an adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth or sometimes from terrorist attacks. Since the concept of disaster resilience has become prominent, research and practice for making the cities resilient play an important role in urban management. Cities are composed of a variety of structures and providing the structural resiliency can protect them. Resilient structures are composed of a number of ideal performance criteria, which based on analysis, experiment, and past experience, are capable to withstand the required level of stress and deformation. In addition, durability, fire resistance, and other capabilities, such as being environmentally friendly with no...

Optimum Codes for Overloaded CDMA Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heidari Khoozani, Mohsen (Author) ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
CDMA is one of the main multiple access techniques. The aim of this work is to propose optimum signature codes to improve the performance of such systems. First, we introduce criteria such as Sum Channel Capacity and Bit Error Rate (BER) to measure the performance of a CDMA system. Also a set of measures named as Distance criteria are proposed to reduce the computational complexity. Various optimization methods are used to optimize these criteria such as Genetic Algorithms and the Particle Swarm Optimization techniques. Then, several sub-optimum signature matrices are derived based on different factors and criteria to improve the performance of Overloaded CDMA systems in terms of the sum...

Capturing an intruder in the pyramid

    , Article 1st International Computer Science Symposium in Russia, CSR 2006, St. Petersburg, 8 June 2006 through 12 June 2006 ; Volume 3967 LNCS , 2006 , Pages 580-590 ; 03029743 (ISSN) Shareghi, P ; Imani, N ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we envision a solution for the problem of capturing an intruder in one of the most popular interconnection topologies, namely the pyramid. A set of agents collaborate to capture a hostile intruder in the network. While the agents can move in the network one hop at a time, the intruder is assumed to be arbitrarily fast, i.e. it can traverse any number of nodes contiguously as far as there are no agents in those nodes. Here we consider a new version of the problem where each agent can replicate new agents when needed, i.e. the algorithm starts with a single agent and new agents are created on demand. In particular, we propose two different algorithms on the pyramid network and...

Operation of tapered steel slit dampers in steel structures using the endurance time method

    Abstract
Based on special properties of metal dampers such as high energy dissipation, stable hysteric cycles, simple application, low cost, insensitivity to changes of temperature and the ability to substitute after the occurrence of earthquakes, they are being used for structural control. One of these metal dampers which has been of special interest is the tapered steel slit damper (TSS). When shear forces are applied, this damper yields and enters the plastic zone. The TSS damper is made of pieces of standard wide flanges where slits have been extracted from their web. These dampers are connected to the top of the chevron braces and under the middle of the beams. In the endurance time (ET) method...

ICoSim-FMS: An intelligent co-simulator for the adaptive control of complex flexible manufacturing systems

    , Article Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory ; Volume 19, Issue 7 , August , 2011 , Pages 1668-1688 ; 1569190X (ISSN) Shirazi, B ; Mahdavi, I ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
We describe an intelligent co-simulator for real time production control of a complex flexible manufacturing system (CFMS) having machine and tool flexibility. The manufacturing processes associated with the CFMS are complicated with each operation being possibly done by several machining centers. The co-simulator design approach is built upon the theory of dynamic meta-model based supervisory control with the cooperation of its own embedded intelligent blocks. The system is implemented by coupling of the centralized simulation controller (CSC) and real-time simulator for enforcing dynamic strategies of shop floor control. The posteriori adaptive co-simulator is equipped with a concurrent...
