    Abstract
In recent years, high interest in using Virtual Machines (VMs) in data centers and cloud computing has significantly increased the demand for high-performance data storage systems. A straightforward approach to providing a high-performance storage system is using Solid-State Drives (SSDs). Inclusion of SSDs in storage systems, however, imposes significantly higher cost compared to Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). Recent studies suggest using SSDs as a caching layer for HDD-based storage subsystems in virtualized platforms. Such studies neglect to address the endurance and cost of SSDs, which can significantly affect the efficiency of I/O caching. Moreover, previous studies only configure the cache...

Evaluation and improvement of energy consumption prediction models using principal component analysis based feature reduction

    , Article Journal of Cleaner Production ; Volume 279 , 2021 ; 09596526 (ISSN) Parhizkar, T ; Rafieipour, E ; Parhizkar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
The building sector is a major source of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in urban regions. Several studies have explored energy consumption prediction, and the value of the knowledge extracted is directly related to the quality of the data used. The massive growth in the scale of data affects data quality and poses a challenge to traditional data mining methods, as these methods have difficulties coping with such large amounts of data. Expanded algorithms need to be utilized to improve prediction performance considering the ever-increasing large data sets. In this paper, a preprocessing method to remove noisy features is coupled with predication methods to improve the...

Post Optimal Analysis application on the reliability evaluation of the Iran power grid

    , Article 2012 11th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2012 - Conference Proceedings ; 2012 , p. 873-878 ; ISBN: 9781460000000 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Access to a computational tractable method for representing the system more realistically has always been an important issue in power system reliability assessment. The Post Optimal Analysis (POA), as a well recognized technique to attack a set of similar optimization problems, has been successfully used to assess the reliability of composite systems. This method exploits the similarity of the system states to speed up the contingency evaluation procedure without sacrificing the accuracy of the results. In this paper, the performance and practical feasibility of the POA technique for power system reliability evaluation is tested using the Iran power grid. The POA based approach is applicable...

Second law based analysis of supplementary firing effects on the Heat Recovery Steam Generator in a combined cycle power plant

    , Article ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA2010, 12 July 2010 through 14 July 2010, Istanbul ; Volume 1 , 2010 , Pages 201-209 ; 9780791849156 (ISBN) Karrabi, H ; Rasoulipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The supplementary firing is one of the techniques which are used to increase the output power of the combined cycle power plants (CCPP). The low construction cost per generated power encourages designers to consider it in the new CCPP. In this paper the thermal and exergy analyses of HRSG for various operating conditions in variation of loads and variation of ambient temperature carried out. They are based on the performance test data at different operating conditions. The objective of these analyses is to present the effects of supplementary firing on gross power output, combined cycle efficiency and the exergy loss in Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) devices at different ambient...

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system in fuzzy measurement to track association

, Article Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 132, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 1-8 ; 00220434 (ISSN) Dehghani Tafti, A ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The main issue in a surveillance environment is the target tracking. The most important concern in this problem is the association of the various measurements with the existing target tracks. The fuzzy c-means data association (FCMDA) algorithm, based on the fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm, is an efficient solution for the problem of measurement to track association in a multisensor multitarget environment. It has a high accuracy in measurement to track association when targets are far from each other. However, its accuracy remains low when targets are close to one another. The FCMDA algorithm performance is usually lost in this environment, especially when measurement noise is high. In the...

    A 70 pJ/b configurable 64-QAM soft MIMO detector

    , Article Integration ; Volume 63 , 2018 , Pages 74-86 ; 01679260 (ISSN) Shabany, M ; Patel, D ; Milicevic, M ; Mahdavi, M ; Gulak, P. G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An area and power efficient high-throughput VLSI implementation of a 4 × 4, 64-QAM soft multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) detector, that is suitable for high-order constellation schemes is presented. The proposed MIMO detector utilizes information contained in the discarded paths to improve the bit-error-rate (BER) performance, and then reduces computational complexity using three innovative improvement ideas. The proposed design is fabricated and fully tested in a 130 nm CMOS technology. Operating with a 270 MHz clock, the design achieves up to 655 Mbps throughput with 195 mW power dissipation at 1.32 V supply. Synthesis results in 65 nm CMOS technology shows that the proposed...
