    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 78, Issue 1-4 , 2015 , Pages 641-650 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Ardeshirilajimi, A ; Aghanouri, A ; Abedian, A ; Milani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer-Verlag London Ltd  2015
    Abstract
In this paper, an innovative method is proposed for material selection. This method is based on the well-known weighting properties approach while integrating a new exponential function in the method to overcome the deficiencies of previously proposed methods. Using a maximum and minimum, in each significant aspect of the problem, for scaling, the values of material properties and achieving more realistic results by not emphasizing on any of the high and low extremes and using an exponential function that ranks the candidates regardless of their number, for improving the performance of the methodology and obtaining more absolute rankings, are some of the advantages of this method. The...

    Abstract
In a deregulated electric power utility industry in which a competitive electricity market can influence system reliability, market risks cannot be ignored. This paper (1) proposes an analytical probabilistic model for reliability evaluation of competitive electricity markets and (2) develops a methodology for incorporating the market reliability problem into HLII reliability studies. A Markov state space diagram is employed to evaluate the market reliability. Since the market is a continuously operated system, the concept of absorbing states is applied to it in order to evaluate the reliability. The market states are identified by using market performance indices and the transition rates...

Overshoot in the step response of fractional-order control systems

    , Article Journal of Process Control ; Volume 22, Issue 1 , January , 2012 , Pages 90-94 ; 09591524 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a sufficient condition for existence of an overshoot in the step response of fractional-order systems is presented. Based on this condition, it can be shown that the existence of an overshoot in the step responses of some classes of fractional-order systems (for example, the class of fractional-order systems having commensurate orders between 1 and 2) is unavoidable. To show the usefulness of the obtained condition, this condition is applied to prove some results on the time response analysis of fractional-order control systems

Closed-form optimal cooperative guidance law against random step maneuver

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 52, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 319-336 ; 00189251 (ISSN) Nikusokhan, M ; Nobahari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc
    Abstract
Based on the optimal control theory, the present study proposes a novel approach to derive a cooperative guidance law for two pursuers with an arbitrary-order linear dynamics against one zero-lag evader with random step maneuver. This approach is intended to minimize the mean value of the resultant control effort taken over a set of possible evader maneuvers which is modeled as a step function, the parameters of which are unknown. Since the resultant control effort is the minimum effort among the pursuers, we encounter the nonlinear "min" function in the performance index. By introducing binary parameters, it is changed to a linear function including binary parameters and continuous...

Adding backlash to the connection elements can improve the performance of a robotic exoskeleton

    , Article Mechanism and Machine Theory ; Volume 152 , 2020 Shafiei, M ; Behzadipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Kinematic mismatch between exoskeletons and human body results in excess internal forces/torques and hence discomfort as well as increase the power consumption. The connection stiffness has been shown to have potentials for minimizing the kinematic mismatch effects. However, realization of a desired stiffness in the connection element seems difficult if not impractical. In this work, adding controlled backlash to the exoskeleton-body connection is investigated as a possible solution for the kinematic mismatch challenge. A stiffness model which includes backlash parameters was formulated and identified experimentally using three male subjects on a typical lower extremity exoskeleton. A...

A novel method for materials selection in mechanical design: Combination of non-linear normalization and a modified digital logic method

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 28, Issue 1 , 2007 , Pages 8-15 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Dehghan Manshadi, B ; Mahmudi, H ; Abedian, A ; Mahmudi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2007
    Abstract
In this investigation, a novel numerical method is proposed for materials selection. This method is based on the well known weighting factor approach while combining non-linear normalization with a modified digital logic method. The proposed mathematical functions and their applicability to the materials selection process is verified by examining two case studies in mechanical design and comparing the results with those obtained from the classical weighted property method. It is concluded that the new approach is capable of providing more reasonable selections as opposed to those obtained from the existing method. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
The earned value is a leading technique in monitoring and analyzing project performance and project progress. Although, it allows exact measurement of project progress, and can uncover any time and cost deviations from the plan, its capability in reporting accepted level of deviation is not well studied. This study presented an approach to overcome this limitation by applying statistical quality control charts to monitor earned value indices. For this purpose, project time and cost performance indices of a real construction project were monitored regularly on individual control charts. The results were quite promising, and not only competed well against traditional approaches, but also...

Improving integral square error performance with implementable fractional-order PI controllers

    , Article Optimal Control Applications and Methods ; Vol. 35, Issue. 3 , May/June , 2014 , pp. 303-323 Rahimian, M. A ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, an algebraic rule for tuning the integer realizations of fractional-order PI controllers is developed, with an integral square error performance index, which outperforms that of an optimal ordinary PI controller. To this end, the PIλ control structure is used in conjunction with a third-order integer approximating filter to provide a three parameter fixed-structure extension of the ordinary PI controller. Next, the extra degree of freedom in setting the order of integration λ is leveraged to introduce a steepest descent direction in the extended controller parameter space. It is then stated that shifting the parameters of an ordinary PI controller along the proposed descent...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel methodology for design and assessment of offshore structures exposed to irregular sea waves. For this, Constrained NewWave (CNW) is integrated with the Endurance Time Analysis (ETA) methodology, which is basically developed for the performance based analysis of onshore structures to earthquake loads. In this approach, the offshore structure is simulated in time-domain under a set of calibrated intensifying wave functions. They are devised to represent a gradually increasing roughness of the sea state by time. A performance index such as base shear, drift or stress in a critical structural members are monitored until they reach to a predefined maximum value. A...
