Impact of mobile source emission inventory adjustment on air pollution photochemical model performance

    , Article Urban Climate ; Volume 32 , 2020 Shahbazi, H ; Hosseini, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Coupled weather forecasting and chemical transport models are useful tools to evaluate air pollution episodes in big cities for the purpose of forecasting and air pollution abatement measures' evaluation. However, large set of accurate data of various sources and modeling calibrations are needed for such complex modeling system to be reliable. The problem becomes more obvious when the model is operated over a domain in which there is a general lack of accurate input data such as emission inventory data. The current study investigates the possibility of model tuning for more accurate prediction of air pollutant concentrations in the city of Tehran in an air pollution episode as a case study....

A method for project performance evaluation by combining the project golden triangle, BSC, AHP, and Topsis

    , Article International Journal of Supply and Operations Management ; Volume 8, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 81-85 ; 23831359 (ISSN) Moradi, N ; Moradi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Kharazmi University  2021
    Abstract
There are several critical measures in the project performance evaluation such as time, cost, and quality. In this paper, a new method for project performance evaluation is presented by combining the project Golden Triangle and the methods in decision science. At first, strategies and measures are introduced for the perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method according to their effect on time, cost, and quality. Next, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used to weigh the measures by the judgments of experts after integrating AHP and BSC. Then, the weights of the five project phases - from the initiation to the closure - are calculated by the Technique for Order of...

Evaluation and design of beaconing in mobile wireless networks

    , Article Ad Hoc Networks ; Vol. 9, issue. 3 , 2011 , p. 368-386 ; ISSN: 15708705 Nayebi, A ; Karlsson, G ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
One of the intrinsic problems of mobility in wireless networks is the discovery of mobile nodes. A widely used solution for this problem is to use different variations of beacons, such as hello packets. Although a poorly designed beaconing scheme may lead to unnecessary energy usage or poor throughput, a systematic approach to analyze and select beaconing parameters is not provided in the literature. Here, we propose a model to study the beaconing efficiency using some measures such as the link lifetime, the probability of link establishment, and the delay to discover a new neighbor. The model is general and does not adhere to any particular mobility model; the only input from the mobility...

Performance Evaluation of Routing Algorithms in NoCs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Niknam, Kimia (Author) ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The increasing complexity of integrated circuits drives the research of new on chip interconnection architectures. Network On Chip (NoCs) are a candidate architecture to be used in future systems, due to its increased performance, reusability and scalability. A NoC is a set of interconnected switches, with IP cores connected to these switches. Different routing algorithms have been proposed for NoCs such as XY deterministic algorithm, and WF (West First), NL (North Last) and NF (Negative First) as partially adaptive algorithms. OE (Odd Even) is not based on adding virtual channels to network topologies. Unlike previous methods, which rely on prohibiting certain turns in order to achieve...

    , Article Procedia Computer Science ; Vol. 31, issue , 2014 , p. 995-1004 Shaverdi, M ; Heshmati, M. R ; Ramezani, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Organizational performance evaluation is a very vital and sensitive process in any industry. One of the most crucial aspects of performance assessment is consideration of financial performance evaluation. In this kind of evaluation, we face many criteria and index to performing and also designing a comprehensive and effective model. Thus, this situation can be regarded as a fuzzy multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem, so the fuzziness and uncertainty of subjective perception should be considered. In this paper performance evaluation of seven active companies in the petrochemical industries was evaluated using combined method of fuzzy and analytic hierarchy process. In this paper...

Modelling and improvement of non-standard queuing systems: A gas station case study

    , Article International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences ; Volume 4, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 324-340 ; 17558077 (ISSN) Teimoury, E ; Yazdi, M. M ; Haddadi, M ; Fathi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This research has modelled a queuing system with no standard states. In order to analyse these systems, some parameters such as the mean of waiting time and the length of queue are computed. These situations usually occur when there is delay in the service, for example, in the gas queuing system that cars are unable to leave after receiving the required services due to the presence of other cars in front of them. These kinds of non-standard queuing systems are usually applied to the assembly and production lines. In this paper, a queuing model for the special non-standard state queuing system is developed to be used in gas stations. The proposed model is implemented in fuel stations in Iran...

Multicast communication in OTIS-hypercube multi-computer systems

    , Article International Journal of High Performance Computing and Networking ; Volume 4, Issue 3-4 , 2006 , Pages 161-173 ; 17400562 (ISSN) Najaf abadi, H. H ; Sarbazi azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The ability to perform multicast communication efficiently in parallel computing systems is increasingly becoming an essential feature of these systems. Therefore, any emerging parallel architecture must be able to provide effective multicasting performance. OTIS-based multi-computer systems are parallel systems that efficiently exploit optical connections between distant nodes, while using electronic connections for physically close processors. No previous work has attempted to determine an optimal multicast communication scheme for OTIS networks. This paper presents two approaches to implement efficient multicast communication in wormhole-routed OTIS networks, for the two different...

The Recursive Transpose-Connected Cycles (RTCC) interconnection network for multiprocessors

    , Article 20th Annual ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, Santa Fe, NM, 13 March 2005 through 17 March 2005 ; Volume 1 , 2005 , Pages 734-738 Farahabady, M. H ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new modular topology for interconnection networks, the Recursive Transpose-Connected Cycles (RTCC). The RTCC has a recursive definition quite similar to that of fractal graphs having interesting topological characteristics, making it suitable for utilization as the base topology of large-scale multicomputer interconnection networks. We study important properties of this topology such as diameter, bisection width and issues related to implementation, such as routing algorithms and the average message latency under VLSI layout constraints. In addition, we prove that the RTCC is a Hamiltonian graph, We conclude that, insight of most of the above-mentioned properties,...

Performance analysis of opportunistic broadcast for delay-tolerant wireless sensor networks

    , Article Journal of Systems and Software ; Vol. 83, issue. 8 , 2010 , p. 1310-1317 ; ISSN: 1641212 Nayebi, A ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Karlsson, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper investigates a class of mobile wireless sensor networks that are unconnected most of the times; we refer to them as delay-tolerant wireless sensor networks (DTWSN). These networks inherit their characteristics from both delay tolerant networks (DTN) and traditional wireless sensor networks. After introducing DTWSNs, three main problems in the design space of these networks are discussed: routing, data gathering, and neighbor discovery. A general protocol is proposed for DTWSNs based on opportunistic broadcasting in delay-tolerant networks with radio device on-off periods. Three performance measures are defined in the study: the energy for sending queries to ask for data from...

    , Article Cluster Computing ; Volume 12, Issue 3 , 2009 , Pages 285-297 ; 13867857 (ISSN) Moraveji, R ; Moinzadeh, P ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Irregular topologies are desirable network structures for building scalable cluster systems and very recently they have also been employed in SoC (system-on-chip) design. Many analytical models have been proposed in the literature to evaluate the performance of networks with different topologies such as hypercube, torus, mesh, hypermesh, Cartesian product networks, star graph, and k-ary n-cube; however, to the best of our knowledge, no mathematical model has been presented for irregular networks. Therefore, as an effort to fill this gap, this paper presents a comprehensive mathematical model for fully adaptive routing in wormhole-switched irregular networks. Moreover, since our approach...

    Abstract
Data reduction technologies have proven their effectiveness to decrease the ever-growing demands on storage system capacities, but also introduce new complexity in the system I/O stack that can easily invalidate well-known best practices. In this paper, we conduct an extensive set of experiments on an enterprise all-flash storage (AFS) system equipped with an open-source data reduction module, i.e., RedHat VDO, and reveal novel observations on the performance gap between the state-of-the-art and the optimal AFS stack with integrated data reduction. We then offer cross-layer optimizations to enhance the performance of AFS, which range from deriving new optimal hardware RAID configurations up...

On endurance of erasure codes in SSD-based storage systems

, Article Computer Architecture and Digital Systems (CADS), 17th CSI International Symposium on ; Article number 6714239 , 2013 , Pages 67-72 ; 9781479905621 Alinezhad Chamazcoti, S. (Saeideh) ; Miremadi, Gh. (Sayyed Ghassem) ; Asadi, H. (Hossein) ; Sharif Univesity of Technology
    Abstract
The wear-out of flash-based Solid-State Drives (SSDs) is a main concern that significantly affects their reliability. One major parameter that accelerates SSD wear-out is the number of write-cycles committed to flash chips. The number of write-cycles in SSD-based disk subsystem is highly dependent on the erasure code implemented in Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAIDs). In this paper, we investigate the impact of erasure codes and the configuration of storage subsystems (i.e., the number of disks participated in the RAID array and stripe unit size) on the endurance of storage systems. The number of write-cycles is considered as a metric to evaluate the endurance of storage system. We...

    Abstract
The stretched hypercube has recently been introduced as an attractive alternative to the well-known hypercube. Previous research on this network topology has mainly focused on topological properties, VLSI and algorithmic aspects of this network. Several analytical models have been proposed in the literature for different interconnection networks, as the most cost-effective tools to evaluate the performance merits of such systems. This paper proposes an analytical performance model to predict message latency in wormhole-switched stretched hypercube interconnection networks with fully adaptive routing. The analysis focuses on a fully adaptive routing algorithm which has been shown to be the...

Performance evaluation of a new backoff method for IEEE 802.11

    , Article Computer Communications ; Volume 30, Issue 18 , 2007 , Pages 3698-3704 ; 01403664 (ISSN) Minooei, H ; Nojumi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Since DCF is the main protocol of accessing other mobile stations in ad hoc networks such as IEEE 802.11 WLANs, a self-controlling method for each station is necessary, called the backoff algorithm. An exponential backoff method has been used in WLANs and significant efforts have been made to analyze its throughput and other important properties such as delay and jitter. In this article, we propose a new backoff algorithm and model it with a discrete-time Markov chain; measuring its saturation throughput under several conditions and several set of parameters which are to be adjusted according to the network condition, with the aim of approaching maximum throughput when stations are...
