Investigation of the effect of incorporating Real Options in the Valuation of Petrochemical Plants in Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Bahramgiri, Mohsen (Supervisor)
Abstract
Real option is one of most promising and crucial concepts in corporate valuation and budgeting process. They are very similar to financial options except that their intrinstic values are calculated based on a company’s practical flexibilities rather than financial contracts. Most previous publications in this field are related to upstream sectors of oil, gas, or mining as well as high-tech industries. The application of this concept in chemical industries has been poorly investigated, and the majority of those limited number of papers have evaluated real options in down-stram sectors. Thus, the application of real options in midstream parts of chemical industry was not thoroughly...
Assessing lifecycle success of petrochemical projects–based on client’s viewpoint

Abstract
For the last couple of decades, researchers/managers have realized that the traditional success criteria known as golden triangle (time, cost, quality) are not adequate measures to align a project with the long term success trend of a company. The perception of project success may differ from one industry to another or from one stakeholder (client, contractor, etc.) to other. Petrochemical projects are of high complexity and a vast variety of parameters needs to be monitored in order to produce on spec products according to the customer requirements and market dynamic changes. To be successful in such complex projects, it is required to be successful in every phase of the project lifecycle....

Abstract
For sometimes researchers and practitioners have realized that the traditional success criteria, known as iron triangle (time, cost, quality), are not adequate indicators to align a project execution with the long term success trend of an organization. Many other success criteria in addition to time, cost and quality of a project can negatively or positively affect the long term success of an organization. Evaluating the project life cycle success is to some extent more judgmental and usually there is no agreed upon measures defined prior to the project execution. There are many stakeholders affected or involved in the life cycle of a project like; owner, contractor, operator, customers,...
Causes of common and frequent claims in oil, gas and petrochemical projects of Iran
, Article KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering ; Volume 18, Issue 5 , June , 2014 , Pages 1270-1278 ; ISSN: 12267988 ; Mortaheb, M. M ; Ahmadian, F. F. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Over recent years, frequent involvements in claims have been inevitable due to unpredictable economic changes and increasing complexities in construction industry. Therefore, even appropriately made contracts are not exempted from claims. On the other hand, construction contract claims are time-consuming, expense-involving and most likely leading to unsatisfactory results. However, there may be some positive outcomes, such as time extension or compensation of damages. To launch investigations, a list of important and frequent claims in oil and gas industry projects of Iran was extracted after a succinct documents review. Further, the most important claim causes were identified through...

2010
Abstract
A new methodology is presented with which the likely impact of accident in one process unit of an industry on other process units can be forecast and assessed. The methodology is based on Monte Carlo Simulation and overcomes the limitations of analytical methods, used hitherto, which were inherently limited in their ability to handle the uncertainty and the complexity associated with domino effect phenomena. The methodology has been validated and its applicability has been demonstrated with two case studies

Abstract
Nowadays "as everywhere in the world", so much attention is drawn to performing safety and HSE management rules in Iran. Considering the long life of oil and it's relevant industries in Iran (since 1908, first oil well in Middle East, Masjid Soleyman), many units with more than 50 years old are still in operation. This situation posed special problems in performing safety and HSE regulations that some of them are communal among these units. This paper reveals the result of industrial projects, collecting numerous technical checklists in such units and author's experiences in recent years in Iran, which is aimed to announce some of these major problems and also present solutions for them

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari Jokar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Decision making for planning a petrochemical plant is a difficult task, particularly when decisions are required to be made under constraints and different objectives. Final purpose of current research is to develop a reliable model for selecting limited petrochimal products among all potential alternatives under different constraints, considering two desired objective functions; Maximizing economic gain and minimizing safety risk. The powerful tool of multi objective decision making has been used for solving the proposed model. The developed model has been applied to Jam Petrochemical Company as a case study and the acquired results found to be successful.
Investigating Factors Affecting Petrochemical Value Chain Completion and Policies for Improvement
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Maleki, Ali (Supervisor) ; Mashyekhi, Ali Naghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Despite the growth in Iran’s petrochemical production, most of the plants are concentrated upstream; although the government has made various interventions to promote industrial development. The literature review shows that government intervention is necessary to solve market failures, especially in developing countries; but it should be tailored to the specific context and especially the distribution of the power. Most experts believe that the cause of the above phenomenon is feedstock rent and the reason for its continuation is the political influence of petrochemical companies. While not rejecting this view, we try to provide policy recommendations by looking more closely at the issue and...

Abstract
This paper reports on the application of low-grade sensible waste heat (liquid phase) driven multi-effect distillation (MED) technology to exploit waste heat sources that are generally abundant in the petrochemical industries especially, those located close to the Persian Gulf's coastline. For this purpose, a techno-economic feasibility study by considering local capital and operating costs for a selected petrochemical plant has been conducted. In this study, a sensible waste heat stream (practically at 80 °C in the liquid phase), which is actively cooled by the cooling process of the plant, is considered as the heat source for the proposed desalination process. This process can recover...
Valuation of Technology Using Real Option
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Modarres Yazdi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, we introduce a systematic approach for valuation of Technology development projects by applying a discrete model of real options valuation. This framework is then applied to a real technology development project. The estimate of volatility is the most important argument that it is difficult to calculate. Data from the project’s feasibility study is gathered and classified in an appropriate format to be ready for simulation. Then uncertainty parameters are identified. The data is separated and their impacts on annual cash flows are considered. Volatility of the whole project is estimated to be relatively high. This is an advantage for the proposed method. In this project,...
Providing an Order-Inventory Planning Model using Heuristics or Meta Heuristics Algorithm (case study: khorasan Petrochemical Co.)
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Hajji, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Planning orders and inventory is one of the most important issues in the planning of petrochemical production. Considering the customization of this industry, orders planning includes a large part of it. Also, in order to reduce the great cost of inventory storage, planning to reduce inventory must be considered. In this regard, we intend to present a model with simultaneous consideration of orders and inventory planning in this research, the ability to decide on acceptance of orders and determine the level of production of products in conditions of uncertainty of demand with random trapezoidal demand in each period can be assumed. This model will practically play a key role in improving...

Golpayegan Qaed Basir Petrochemical Company is one of the lucrative and entrepreneurial companies in Iran. Every day in this complex, a large amount of wastewater is being generated and transferred to the evaporative lag after the primary and secondary purification outside the complex and it is not restored. Considering the growing importance of surface and underground water resources, reuse of wastewater is a valuable production. In this research, the optimization of the sewage treatment system of the complex was evaluated by replacing the chemicals in the primary purification unit and also by using chloride-ferric and trickling filter for tertiary purification(treating) of the...
A Study on the Identifiers of Excess Demand in Iran’s Petrochemicals Exchange
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahmati, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
Iran's petrochemicals exchange has experienced regular excess demand occurrence in recent years which has resulted in most transactions being done at ceil price specified by Iran's mercantile exchange. This study shows that the mechanism determined by Iran's mercantile exchange for doing transactions has given people the incentive to state their initial demand higher than their real demand in order to be able to gain their real demand in market. In order to do this, I have used data related to all transactions done in Iran's petrochemical exchange during March 2013 and March 2016 in a panel logit model and show that monopolistic power used by suppliers and the probability of excess demand...
