    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 48, Issue 23 , Volume 48, Issue 23 , 2009 , Pages 10614-10618 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Motamed, S ; Ghaemmaghami, F ; Alemzadeh, I ; Sharif University of Technology

Partial purification of plant peroxidase from turnip (Brassica rapa) was optimized. Aqueous two phase system and precipitation by ammonium sulfate (as two parallel purification methods) were used. Polyethylene glycol/ammonium sulfate/NaCl (25:7:3%, w/v) system followed by gel-filtration chromatography gave a purification factor of about 36 fold. On the other hand, ammonium sulfate precipitation (60-80% deg) followed by gel filtration gave only about 13 purification fold. Hence, the aqueous two-phase system was more efficient and useful method as a primary purification step since it was less laborious, less time-consuming, and led to more purification factor. The partially purified turnip...

Study on modification of colloidal silica surface with magnesium ions

, Article Journal of Colloid and Interface Science ; 2009 , Pages 379-383 ; 00219797 (ISSN) Karami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
The prepared colloidal silica via ion exchange was modified by adding Mg+2 ions in the surface growth process of colloidal silica. The particle size of the modified colloidal silica was decreased by increasing the seed concentration, whereas that of colloidal silica was slightly increased as the seeds concentration exceed 15 wt%. But the trend of changes in surface area was completely reversed. Magnesium ions on surface of the modified colloidal silica were identified by the measurement of energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). After modifying with Mg+2 ions, the iso-electric point (IEP) of colloidal silica in pH ∼ 2 without modification, disappears over the whole pH range. © 2008...

New protein-based hydrogel with superabsorbing properties: Effect of monomer ratio on swelling behavior and kinetics

    , Article Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research ; Volume 47, Issue 23 , 2008 , Pages 9206-9213 ; 08885885 (ISSN) Pourjavadi, A ; Salimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
In this paper we report an efficient synthesis of hydrolyzed collagen-g-poly(sodium acrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl aery late) hydrogel through chemical cross-linking by graft copolymerization of these two monomers onto the protein backbone in the presence of a cross-linker. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To investigate the effect of monomer ratio on swelling behavior in various media three hydrogels with different acrylic acid/2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (AA/HEA) weight ratios were synthesized and swelling capacity was...

Anodic behavior of clioquinol at a glassy carbon electrode

    , Article Bioelectrochemistry ; Volume 80, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 175-181 ; 15675394 (ISSN) Ghalkhani, M ; Fernandes, I. P. G ; Oliveira, S. C. B ; Shahrokhian, S ; Oliveira-Brett, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
Clioquinol is an antifungal, antiprotozoal and an Alzheimer's disease drug with cytotoxic activity toward human cancer cells. The electrochemical behavior of clioquinol and its oxidation product was studied using cyclic, differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry over a wide pH range on a glassy carbon electrode. The results revealed that the oxidation of clioquinol is an irreversible pH-dependent process that proceeds with the transfer of one electron and one proton in an adsorption-controlled mechanism and results in the formation of a main oxidation product, which adsorbs very strongly on the glassy carbon surface. The charge transfer coefficient was calculated as 0.64. The adsorbed...

Design of pH-responsive nanoparticles of terpolymer of poly(methacrylic acid), polysorbate 80 and starch for delivery of doxorubicin

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces ; Volume 101 , January , 2013 , Pages 405-413 ; 09277765 (ISSN) Shalviri, A ; Chan, H. K ; Raval, G ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Liu, Q ; Heerklotz, H ; Wu, X. Y ; Sharif University of Technology
This work focused on the design of new pH-responsive nanoparticles for controlled delivery of anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox). Nanoparticles of poly(methacrylic acid)-polysorbate 80-grafted starch (PMAA-PS 80-g-St) were synthesized by using a one-pot method that enabled simultaneous grafting of PMAA and PS 80 onto starch and nanoparticle formation in an aqueous medium. The particles were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, TEM, DLS, and potentiometric titration. Dox loading and in vitro release from the nanoparticles were investigated. The FTIR and 1H NMR confirmed the chemical composition of the graft terpolymer. The nanoparticles were relatively spherical with narrow size distribution and...
