    Blood pressure estimation using photoplethysmogram signal and its morphological features

    Abstract
    In this paper, we present a machine learning model to estimate the blood pressure (BP) of a person using only his photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal. We propose algorithms to better detect some critical points of the PPG signal, such as systolic and diastolic peaks, dicrotic notch and inflection point. These algorithms are applicable to different PPG signal morphologies and improve the precision of feature extraction. We show that the logarithm of dicrotic notch reflection index, the ratio of low-to high-frequency components of heart rate (HR) variability signal, and the product of HR multiplied by the modified Normalized Pulse Volume (mNPV) are the key features in accurately estimating the BP...

    Abstract
    Using simultaneous photoplethysmogram (PPG) and pulse transducer signals from the same finger, a high correlation (Mean: 98.6, STD: 1) is obtained between the AC part of the PPG and estimated volume changes (after normalization). These results point to the fact that in the resting fingertip, PPG signal variations are only due to volume changes and that blood density does not change thus has no contribution

    Flow mediated dilation (FMD) measurement using ultrasound imaging (FMD-US) has been established as a standard method for assessing the endothelial function. Recently, a less skilled-operator demanding method has been proposed based on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) changes during reactive hyperemia. It was shown that the amplitude of the PPG pulse (FMD-PPG) changed in a quite similar manner to that of the artery diameter in the method of the FMD-US i.e. increases following releasing the cuff and then gradually returns to baseline.     Endothelial dysfunction assessment has received considerable attention due to its potential in early screening of cardiovascular diseases. Since the seminal work by Celermajer in flow-mediated dilation (FMD) based on B-mode ultrasound measurement of the brachial artery dilation following limb ischemia, many attempts have been made toward applying this method to clinical, non-invasive endothelial dysfunction assessment.     In this paper, a special probe is designed using an array of photodiodes and a 960 nm LED for recording the wrist photoplethysmogram (PPG). The design is based on Monte-Carlo simulation of light propagation in tissues. Two series of experiments were carried-out: normal breathing and deep breathing. In both experiments, finger and wrist PPG were simultaneously recorded from the index finger.     Dyslipidemia is considered to be one of the main heart risk factors, affecting the endothelial vascular function, which can be non-invasively investigated by ultrasound flow-mediated dilation (US-FMD). However, US-FMD comes at a high-cost and is operator-dependent. In this paper, the effect of dyslipidemia on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal recorded from collateral index fingers is investigated following a previous study where it was shown that results similar to that of US-FMD can be replicated by the PPG.     In this paper, an approach based on adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) is evaluated for extraction of the fetal heart rate using photoplethysmographic signals from the maternal abdomen. A simple optical model is proposed in which the maternal and fetal blood pulsations result in emulated signals where the lower SNR limit (fetal to maternal) is - 25 dB. It is shown that a recursive least-squares algorithm is capable of extracting the peaks of the fetal PPG from these signals, for typical values of maternal and fetal tissues. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd.     The feasibility of a novel system to reliably estimate the normalized central blood pressure (CBPN) from the radial photoplethysmogram (PPG) is investigated. Right-wrist radial blood pressure and left-wrist PPG were simultaneously recorded in five different days. An industry-standard applanation tonometer was employed for recording radial blood pressure.
