The current study aimed at application of the plain and supported platinum nanoparticles as a heterogenous catalyst for the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. Monodispersed platinum nanoparticles were synthesized by reduction of H2PtCl6 by ethanol in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone as a stabilizer, and then were immobilized on four types of zeolites. The obtained catalyst granules were characterized by X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The study then focused on elaboration of the catalytic activity of the nano catalysts under different operational conditions. It was found that reaction is adequately rapid at ambient temperature, and by utilizing a...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mahshid, Sara (Author) ; Askari, Masoud (Supervisor) ; Dolati, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
The present work describes sensing application of modified TiO2 nanotubes towards detection of dopamine. The TiO2 nanotubes electrode was prepared using anodizing method at different conditions, among which NaF/ NaHSO4 solution and voltage of 15 V was chosen as the optimum condition. In order to improve the performance, surface modification with metal nanoparticles (Pd, Pt and Au) and carbon is required using “pulse electrodeposition” and “decomposition of polyethylene glycol at 600 °C” respectively. Carbon was deposited by decomposition of polyethylene glycol in a tube furnace to improve the conductivity. In this regard two type of electrodes were proposed: Pd-Pt-Au-TiO2 and C-Ni(Pt)-TiO2....

The present research describes sensing behavior of modified aligned carbon nanotubes toward detection of hydrogen sulfide. Aligned carbon nanotubes were grown on etched stainless steel by thermal chemical vapor deposition. Obtained CNTs have curved closed tips and bamboo like structure. Purification of carbon nanotubes were performed by electrochemical oxidation of CNTs. Potential cycling was applied on grown CNTs in different acid solutions and 0.2 M sulfuric acid was chosen to oxidize the CNTs. Carboxylic functional groups were produced by electrochemical oxidation of CNTs and can be observed in FTIR studies. These groups enhanced the electrochemical properties of electrodes and may act as...

Surface free energy of platinum nanoparticles at zero pressure: A molecular dynamic study

    , Article Solid State Communications ; Volume 150, Issue 5-6 , February , 2010 , Pages 254-257 ; 00381098 (ISSN) Akbarzadeh, H ; Abroshan, H ; Parsafar, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Metallic nanoparticles are interesting because of their use in catalysis and sensors. The surface energy of the FCC platinum nanoparticles are investigated via molecular dynamics simulation using Quantum Sutton-Chen (QSC) potential. We have calculated the Gibbs free energy for the FCC platinum bulk and also for its nanoparticle. All calculations have been carried out at zero pressure. We have used the thermodynamic integration method to obtain the Gibbs free energy. The total Gibbs free energy is taken as the sum of its central bulk and its surface free energy. We have calculated the free energy of a platinum nanoparticle as a function of temperature

Electrochemical investigation of electrodeposited platinum nanoparticles on multi walled carbon nanotubes for methanol electro-oxidation

    , Article Journal of Chemical Sciences ; Volume 129, Issue 9 , 2017 , Pages 1399-1410 ; 09743626 (ISSN) Mokarami Ghartavol, H ; Moakhar, R. S ; Dolati, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract: The electrodeposition of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) on multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/fluorine-doped tin oxide glass (FTO) was investigated. Nucleation and growth mechanisms were studied via Scharifker and Hills model. Chronoamperometry results clearly show that the electrodeposition processes are diffusion-controlled and the diffusion coefficient is 1.5×10-5cm2/s. The semi-spherical particles with lamellar morphology were observed in 1M H 2SO 4, while a petal shape was discerned in 0.5M H 2SO 4. Also, dispersion, size, and uniformity of PtNPs were investigated, where the finer distribution of PtNPs with the average size less than 100 nm was obtained in 0.5M H 2SO 4...

In this work, we present the design and fabrication of a novel nanocomposite based on noble metal and metal oxide nanoparticles dispersed on highly porous carbon obtained via the pyrolysis of an inorganic complex and metal-organic frameworks. This nanocomposite is prepared by a two-step procedure: first, the composite support of nanoporous carbon (NPC) is obtained by the direct carbonization of the Cr-benzene dicarboxylic ligand (BDC) MOF in an Argon atmosphere at 500 °C (Cr2O3-NPC). A mixture containing Cr2O3-NPC and [PtCl(SnCl3)(SMe2)2] is then prepared, and underflow of Argon is heated to 380 °C. Finally, Pt-SnO2 nanoparticles are loaded on the Cr2O3-NPC support, and the obtained...
