    Abstract
Extensive experimental investigation was conducted to study the effect of leading-edge roughness on the state of the boundary layer of a wind turbine blade section. The application of surface grit roughness simulates surface irregularities that occur on the wind turbine blades. The measurements were done using multiple hot-film sensors and surface pressure transducers in both static and plunging oscillation of the airfoil. Frequency domain analysis was used to determine the state of the unsteady boundary layer

    Abstract
This investigation addresses the boundary layer study of a plunging airfoil. It specifically concerns the effect of reduced frequency on transition and separation/reattachment of the unsteady boundary layer. The wind tunnel measurements were conducted using multiple hot-film sensors, pressure transducers and a boundary-layer rake, at Reynolds numbers of 0.42 to 0.84 million, and over reduced frequencies from 0.05 to 0.11. It was observed the boundary layer transition occurs by a laminar separation bubble. The unsteady laminar separation is promoted (delayed) by the increase of the reduced frequency in upstroke (downstroke) portion of the equivalent angle of attack

    Abstract
Extensive tests were carried out on a section of a wind turbine blade. The effect of reduced frequency on the boundary layer transition point of the model oscillating in plunge has been investigated. The spatial-temporal progressions of the transition point and the state of the unsteady boundary layer were measured using multiple hot-film sensors. The measurements showed that reduced frequency highly affects variations of the transition point and results in a hysteresis loop in the dynamic transition locations. The dominated frequencies of the boundary layer are found to be a function of the reduced frequency and mean angle of attack

    Abstract
Series of experimental tests were conducted on a section of a 660 kW wind turbine blade to measure the pressure distribution of this model oscillating in plunging motion. In order to minimize the amount of data required to predict aerodynamic loads of the airfoil, a General Regression Neural Network, GRNN, was trained using the measured experimental data. The network once proved to be accurate enough, was used to predict the flow behavior of the airfoil for the desired conditions. Results showed that with using a few of the acquired data, the trained neural network was able to predict accurate results with minimal errors when compared with the corresponding measured values. Therefore with...

    Abstract
Aerodynamic coefficients on a two dimensional plunging airfoil, in a low-speed wind tunnel are presented. Dynamic motion was produced by plunging the model over a range of reduced frequencies, and mean angles of attack. The Reynolds number in the present test was held fixed (Re = 1.5×10 5), and the reduced frequency was varied in an almost wide range. Surface static pressure distribution was measured on the upper and lower sides of the model, during the oscillating motion. It was found that reduced frequency had strong effects on the pressure distribution, near the leading edge of the airfoil. For mean equivalent angles of attack of 0, 5 degrees, hysteresis loops on the upper surface of the...

Impact of dielectric barrier discharge plasma on the wake of a wind turbine blade section oscillating in plunge

    Abstract
Effects of dielectric barrier discharge plasma have been studied on the wake velocity profiles of a section of a 660 kW wind turbine blade in plunging motion in a wind tunnel. The corresponding unsteady velocity profiles show remarkable improvement when the plasma actuators were operating and the angles of attack of the model were beyond the static stall angles of the airfoil. As a result the drag force was considerably reduced. It is further observed that the plasma-induced flow attenuates the leading edge vortices that are periodically shed into wake and diminishes the large eddies downstream. The favorable effects of the plasma augmentation are shown to occur near the uppermost and...
