    Abstract
Electrospray is an old processing technique that has recently been rediscovered. This technology is revolutionizing the biomaterials and nanotechnology fields by opening up new areas of research in fabricating drug delivery nano-devices. Due to their size, nanoparticles have the advantage of reaching less accessible sites in the body by escaping phagocytosis and entering tiny capillaries. Nanoparticles also have the unique property to accumulate at the site of inflammation and therefore, are very suitable for targeted drug delivery. The feasibility of fabricating relatively monodispersed polymeric nanoparticles by electrospray method in a modified electrospray setup is demonstrated in this...

Experimental Investigation of Polymer Type and Concentration on the Oil Recovery in Polymer Flooding Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bamzad, Vahid (Author) ; Ramazani Saadatanadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of Iranian oil reservoirs, usually fractured carbonate, are in the end of primary or secondary recovery. Enhanced oil recovery methods are required for obtaining more performance from these resources. It seems to obtain more oil from reservoirs by flooding polymer after water flooding due to persistence of polymer effect, so the cost remain low. In this project, at the first the theory of water flooding and polymer flooding is described and after that we have done the following steps: •Injection of water into the plugs and calculate secondary recovery •Injection of polymer samples with 700 ppm concentration into the plugs •Injection of polymer samples with 1500 ppm concentration into...

    Abstract
In this study, crosslinked and non-crosslinked carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) membranes were prepared with different concentrations of polymer. Then, the permeability of pure CO2, N2, and CH4 was measured through these membranes in dry state to investigate the influence of polymer concentration and applied feed pressure on permeability and permselectivity. The permeability of CO2 through membranes was higher than the other gases. A comparison of permeabilities revealed that the permeability of N2, CO2, and CH4 increased on an average of 33, 40 and 20 percent, respectivly, by increasing the feed pressure from 6 to 10...

    Abstract
Understanding the dynamics of direct electrospinning is the key to control fiber morphologies that are critical for the development of new electrospinning methods and novel materials. Here, we propose the theory for direct electrospinning based on theories for (liquid) "rope coiling" and experimentally test it. For the experiments, the buckling of microscale liquid ropes formed from polymer solutions is studied systematically using three different electrospinning setups and for different polymer concentrations. We show that different buckling regimes exist, whose dynamics are governed by an interplay of electrical, inertial, and viscous forces, and that three different buckling regimes...

    Abstract
We describe here a theoretical framework to model the bulk degradation of hydrogels, which are prepared by chemical cross-linking of pendant functional groups on long polymer chains. The random order of the cleavage of degradable bonds was described by stochastic Monte Carlo simulation. The events of bond cleavage were related to the macroscopic changes of hydrogel by the Bray-Merrill equation. Next, the time for the gel to disintegrate was predicted by considering the relation between the recursive nature in breaking the cross-link nodes and gel-to-sol transition. To start the simulation, initial network properties including the number of active functional groups on the polymer chain and...

    Abstract
In this work, the partition coefficients of Cephalexin in aqueous two-phase systems containing PEG [poly(ethylene glycol)] 4000, 10000 and K 2HPO4, Na3Citrate (C6H 5Na3O7 5, 5H2O) have been measured. The experimental data were obtained in a wide range of temperatures, (28.2 to 37.2) °C. The effects of temperature, pH, polymer concentration, polymer molecular weight, and salt concentration on the partitioning of Cephalexin were also studied. The results showed that salt concentration has a large effect on the partition coefficient, and temperature has an almost negligible effect. The Chen-NRTL Gibbs energy model was used to correlate the experimental results. © 2009 American Chemical Society

Polymer-Enhanced low-salinity brine to control in situ mixing and salt dispersion in low-salinity waterflooding

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Volume 35, Issue 13 , 2021 , Pages 10540-10550 ; 08870624 (ISSN) Darvish Sarvestani, A ; Rostami, B ; Mahani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Chemical Society  2021
    Abstract
Although viability of low-salinity waterflooding (LSWF) at the laboratory scale has been proven, there are some challenges associated with its field application, which sheds uncertainties on its economic success. One of the challenges is the minimum required volume of low-salinity water, which should be injected to the reservoir due to the salt dispersion in porous media. Once the low-saline brine is injected into the reservoir, mixing of injected (low-salinity) and resident (high-salinity) brines occurs and the developed mixing zone grows continuously as the front moves from the injection well toward the production well. Increase in the salinity of the front reduces the efficiency of LSWF....

    Abstract
In this study, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene microporous flat-sheet membranes were prepared via a thermally induced phase separation method with a mixture of dibutyl phthalate and dioctyl phthalate as a diluent. The effects of the polymer composition and coagulation bath temperature on the morphology and performance of the fabricated membranes were investigated. The hydrophilicity results of the membranes demonstrated that membrane modification reduced the water contact angle by about 45°, whereas the pure water flux was enhanced about four times. The antifouling behavior of the fabricated membranes was also investigated in a membrane bioreactor. The results show that the pure water...

Monitoring the behaviour of anionic polymer-anionic surfactant stabilized foam in the absence and presence of oil: Bulk and bubble-scale experimental analyses

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 97, Issue S1 , 2019 , Pages 1386-1398 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Veyskarami, M ; Hossein Ghazanfari, M ; Shafiei, Y ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The present study aims at monitoring the bulk and bubble-scale behaviour of anionic polyacrylamide-sodium dodecyl sulphate stabilized foam in the absence and presence of oil. Dynamic stability tests provided results indicating that polymer increases the foam dynamic stability and decreases the drainage. Oil slows down the drainage rate of polymer-surfactant foam. In the absence of oil, foam is drained gradually/smoothly whereas remarkable fluctuations are evident in drainage graphs when oil is present. The Hele-Shaw cell was employed to conduct bubble-scale as well as statistical analyses on how foam texture is influenced by a polymer-surfactant system and hydrocarbon. Bubble-scale analyses,...

Improvement of polymer flooding using in-situ releasing of smart nano-scale coated polymer particles in porous media

    , Article Energy Exploration and Exploitation ; Volume 30, Issue 6 , 2012 , Pages 915-940 ; 01445987 (ISSN) Ashrafizadeh, M ; Ramazani, S. A. A ; Sadeghnejad, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is modeling and simulation of in-situ releasing of smart nano-sized core-shell particles at the water-oil interface during polymer flooding. During the polymer flooding process, when these nano-particles reach the water-oil interface, migrate to the oil phase and the hydrophobic layer of them dissolves in this phase. After dissolution of this protective nano-sized layer, the hydrophilic core containing a water-soluble ultra high molecular weight polymer diffuses back into the water phase and with dissolving in this phase, dramatically increases viscosity of flooding water in the neighborhood of the water-oil interface. In this study, two different...

    Abstract
Hydrogels made of natural polymers [chitosan (CS) and gelatin (G)] have been prepared having mechanical properties similar to those of muscle tissues. In this study, the effect of polymer concentration and scaffold stiffness on the behavior of seeded muscle-derived cells (MDCs) on the CS-G hydrogel sheets has been evaluated. Both variables were found to be important in cell viability. Viability was assessed by observation of the cell morphology after 1 day as well as a 14-day MTT assay. The CS-G hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, which revealed evidences of strong intermolecular interactions between CS and G. Hydrogel samples with intermediate...
