    Abstract
Pore network modeling uses a network of pores connected by throats to model the void space of a porous medium and tries to predict its various characteristics during multiphase flow of various fluids. In most cases, a non-realistic regular lattice of pores is used to model the characteristics of a porous medium. Although some methodologies for extracting geologically realistic irregular networks from pore space images have been presented, these methods require some experimental data which are either unavailable or costly to obtain. 3-dimensional image or 2-dimensional SEM images are among these types of data. In this paper a new irregular lattice algorithm for the construction of these...

    Abstract
In this study, we have utilized 3-D micro-tomography images of real and synthetic rocks to introduce two mathematical correlations which estimate the distribution parameters of 3-D coordination number using a single 2-D cross-sectional image. By applying a watershed segmentation algorithm, it is found that the distribution of 3-D coordination number is acceptably predictable by statistical analysis of the network extracted from 2-D images. In this study, we have utilized 25 volumetric images of rocks in order to propose two mathematical formulas. These formulas aim to approximate the average and standard deviation of coordination number in 3-D pore networks. Then, the formulas are applied...

Application of Data Compression and Cellular Development Algorithms in Pore Network Modeling

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Jamshidi, Saeid (Author) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, pore network modeling has been used to predict various characteristics of porous media from capillary pressure to heat and mass transfer coefficients. In pore network modeling, the void space of a rock sample is represented at the microscopic scale by a network of pores connected by throats. Construction of a reasonable representation of the geometry and topology of the pore space will lead to a reliable prediction of the properties of porous media. In this thesis, a new approach for the construction of pore network models is proposed. This approach is based on the theory of multi-cellular growth simulation, or L-systems. In order to show the capabilities of this approach,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nejad Ebrahimi, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Bozorgmehry Boozarjomehry, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
A genetic-based pore network extraction method from micro-CT images is proposed in this work. Several variables such as the number, radius and location of pores, the coordination number, as well as the radius and length of the throats are used herein as the optimization parameters. Two methods are presented for modeling the pore network structure. Unlike the previous models, these methods are directly based on minimizing the error between the extracted network and the real porous medium. This leads to the generation of more accurate results while reducing required computational memories. Two different objective functions are used in building the network. In the first method, only the...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Nowroozi, Hojjat (Author) ; Bozorgmehry, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Development of pore network models for real porous media requires a detailed understanding of physical processes occurring on the microscopic scale and a complete description of porous media morphology. In this study, the microstructure of porous media has been represented by three dimensional networks of interconnected pores and throats which are designed by an object oriented approach. Afterwards, the connectivity of the system has been optimized by an optimization algorithm. To validate the methodology, a network of a carbonate sample is constructed. In this model, the geometrical characteristics of the pores and throats, such as their shapes, effective radii and lengths, are selected...

Investigating the Dispersion Phenomenon in Fluid Flow through Porous Media Using Percolation Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keybondorian, Ebrahim (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Ganjeh Ghazvini, Mostafa (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Many processes in the petroleum engineering industry involve particle transport in oil and gas reservoirs including sand production, fines migration, and nanoparticle injection. In these processes it is important to understand where the particles are travelling in the reservoir and the impact that they have on the formation properties. Large particles can damage the formation and decrease permeability which reduces the productive capacity of the reservoir. During nanoparticle injection, forces at the pore level can cause retention of particles and prevent their recovery. In addition, due to the heterogeneity of typical reservoirs, it is difficult to predict how particles will spread across...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Daliri, Ahmad (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Two phase flow through porous media is one of great interests which have been studied for decades in petroleum sciences and even other fields, e.g. hydrology and physics, to solve problems such as enhanced oil recovery, contaminated groundwater or CO2 sequestration projects. Flow in porous media typically predict by means of Darcy’ law which in two phase flow lead to equations such as Buckley-Leverett or Koval, but today it is well approved that compact prediction of flow pattern by these equations may be accompanied by enormous errors and it’s because flow in certain condition is fractal. In this work a new mechanistic model has been used for simulating of immiscible drainage process and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khasi, Saeed (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this work, flow transport, distribution, and dissolution of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in heterogeneous porous media were modeled by focusing on the dissolution process in pore-level and field scale. First, by adopting advection-diffusion and mass transfer equations, dissolution process and NAPL distribution were investigated in a heterogeneous porous media using pore network modeling. The 2-D developed model was based on observations of micromodel tests. The pore scale simulator which adopted by this work was improved in some aspects in comparison to previous models in the literatures. First, in the phase displacement, by considering more realistic geometries for pore structure...

Simulation of Clogging in Porous Media by Pore Network Model

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Razavy, Sina (Author) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Raoof, Amir (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Clogging of the pores of the porous medium occurs in different processes such as geothermal injection pumps, hydrocarbon wells, and underground water extraction wells. We need a model that can simulate these blockages in order to predict how fundamental variables of the porous medium change under different flow regimes and different particle sizes in the fluid (for example, the relationship between porosity and permeability changes). The aim is to simulate clogging in a porous medium using a pore network model. Simulations should model pore clogging and show how the permeability of the sample changes due to pore clogging. In the pore network, there are often thousands (or millions) of pores...

Modeling of Non-Darcy flow through anisotropic porous media: Role of pore space profiles

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 151 , 2016 , Pages 93-104 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Veyskarami, M ; Hassani, A. H ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Excess pressure drop induced by inertial effects limits the applicability of Darcy's law for modeling of fluid flow through porous media at high velocities. It is expected such additional pressure drop is influenced by pore/morphology of porous media. This work concerns with fundamental understanding of how throat curvature affects intrinsic properties of porous media at non-Darcy flow conditions using network modeling. Conical, parabolic, hyperbolic, and sinusoidal capillary ducts with three types of imposed anisotropy are used to construct the network in a more realistic manner. Solutions of one dimensional Navier-Stokes equation for incompressible fluid flow through converging/diverging...

    Abstract
Petrography and image analysis have been widely used to identify and quantify porous characteristics in carbonate reservoirs. This paper uses the thin section images of 200 carbonate rock samples to predict the absolute permeability using intelligent and empirical methods. For each thin section, several pore network parameters are extracted from thin section images of rocks including the average pore size, average throat size, average throat length and average 2-D coordination number of pore network. A neural-based model successfully predicts the permeability of samples using pore network parameters as the inputs. Second neural network is applied for predicting absolute permeability...

Next, a designed feed–forward convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained based on the dataset to estimate several morphological, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical characteristics of the porous material in a fraction of a second. In order to fine–tune the CNN design,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khajvand, Mahdieh (Author) ; Soltanieh, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research is to model the separation and transport of multi-component gas mixture through a nanoporous membrane by using pore network models (PNM).
The first part of this project represents the membrane simulating by means of the PNM. A three-dimensional network is used to represent the membrane’s pore space and it consists of two parts; pore and throat. The pores are the main parts of the network and their diameter is characterized according to the pore size distribution of the membrane. Every throat connects two pores and the number of throats which is connected to each pore is named "coordination number". Using a variety size of pores and throats leads to production of...

    , Article Computational Geosciences ; Volume 22, Issue 1 , February , 2018 , Pages 329-346 ; 14200597 (ISSN) Veyskarami, M ; Hassani, A. H ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of technology
    Springer International Publishing  2018
    Abstract
The network modeling approach is applied to provide a new insight into the onset of non-Darcy flow through porous media. The analytical solutions of one-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in sinusoidal and conical converging/diverging throats are used to calculate the pressure drop/flow rate responses in the capillaries of the network. The analysis of flow in a single pore revealed that there are two different regions for the flow coefficient ratio as a function of the aspect ratio. It is found that the critical Reynolds number strongly depends on the pore geometrical properties including throat length, average aspect ratio, and average coordination number of the porous media, and an...

In pore network modeling, the void space of a rock sample is represented at the microscopic scale by a network of pores connected by throats. Construction of a reasonable representation of the geometry and topology of the pore space will lead to a reliable prediction of the properties of porous media. Recently, the theory of multi-cellular growth (or L-systems) has been used as a flexible tool for generation of pore network models which do not require any special information such as 2D SEM or 3D pore space images. In general, the networks generated by this method are irregular pore network models which are inherently closer to the complicated nature of the porous media rather than regular...

    Abstract
In this paper, the dissolution and mobilization of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) blobs in the Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) process were upscaled using dynamic pore network modeling (PNM) of three-dimensional and unstructured networks. We considered corner flow and micro-flow mechanisms including snap-off and piston-like movement for two-phase flow. Moreover, NAPL entrapment and remobilization were evaluated using force analysis to develop the capillary desaturation curve (CDC) and predict the onset of remobilization. The corner diffusion mechanism was also applied in the modeling of interphase mass transfer to represent NAPL dissolution as the dominant mass transfer...
