    Abstract
In the present study, in the first part for a spherical vessel with known dimensions and working pressure, two methods of hoop and equivalent stress optimization across the wall thickness are employed to determine the best autofrettage pressure. In the next part for a predefined working pressure the minimum wall thickness of the vessel is calculated using two other design criteria i.e. (A) optimizing the hoop stress, and (B) assuming a suitable percent for the penetration of yielding within the wall thickness. Finally, the optimum thickness and the necessary strengthening pressure are extracted and different plots are introduced for different types of structural materials under different...

Strengthening of metallic beams with different types of pre-stressed un-bonded retrofit systems

    , Article Composite Structures ; Volume 159 , 2017 , Pages 81-95 ; 02638223 (ISSN) Kianmofrad, F ; Ghafoori, E ; Elyasi, M. M ; Motavalli, M ; Rahimian, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Unlike bonded retrofit systems, un-bonded systems do not need any surface preparation prior to bond application, which reduces the overall time and cost of a retrofit plan. Because the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate in the un-bonded (tendon) systems is not bonded to a metallic substrate, different variants of the retrofit systems can be developed to ease application in the field. This paper presents four different variants of the prestressed un-bonded retrofit (PUR) systems: trapezoidal PUR (TPUR), triangular PUR (TriPUR), Flat PUR (FPUR), and Contact PUR (CPUR) systems. Analytical solutions based on the flexibility approach are developed to predict the behavior of the metallic...

    Abstract
A nonlocal continuum shell model is developed to study the stability of nanocones under combined loading: external pressure and compression force. The nonlinear governing equations of motion of nanocone are obtained using Hamiltons principle and the external loads are considered as prestress. Based on Eringens nonlocal elasticity theory the small-scale effect is accounted in the governing equations of motion. To obtain the critical loads, the equations are solved using Galerkin technique and the effect of small-scale parameter and geometry on the stability of nanocone is studied

Seismic retrofit of large-scale reinforced concrete columns by prestressed high-strength metal strips

    , Article Proceedings of the 2009 Structures Congress - Don't Mess with Structural Engineers: Expanding Our Role, 30 April 2009 through 2 May 2009, Austin, TX ; 2009 , Pages 2863-2872 ; 9780784410318 (ISBN) Moghaddam, H. A ; Samadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the application of pre-stressed high strength metal strips in retrofit of RC columns. Six 2/3 scale were deliberately designated with insufficient transverse reinforcement details and tested under constant axial and cyclic lateral load reversals. The level of axial load and the pattern of strengthening were parameters of this study. It was observed that the technique has been capable to enhance the lateral behavior of columns significantly, in terms of ductility. Very ductile behavior was obtained. The height-wise variations of lateral strain on confining strips are studied. The analysis of the fiber-based model of tested columns...

    Abstract
Reinforced concrete columns with insufficient transverse steel reinforcement are not capable to dissipate seismic energy due to lack of necessary ductility. In this research, six RC columns with poor transverse reinforcements are tested under cyclic and axial loads as control columns and retrofitted ones. Prestressed and non-pre-stressed CFRP strips used as external transverse reinforcement to evaluate the benefits of active and passive confinement. Results indicate that additional confinement due to the use of CFRP strips enhances the strength, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of columns. The advantages of active confinement versus passive confinement are demonstrated too. © 2006...

Fatigue life estimation of bolt clamped and interference fitted-bolt clamped double shear lap joints using multiaxial fatigue criteria

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 43 , 2013 , Pages 327-336 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Abazadeh, B ; Chakherlou, T. N ; Farrahi, G. H ; Alderliesten, R. C ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper seven different multiaxial fatigue criteria based on stress, strain and energy were employed to estimate the fatigue lives of double shear lap joint specimens of aluminum 2024-T3 with bolt clamped and interference fitted-bolt clamped fastener holes. Detailed finite element (FE) simulations were conducted to obtain the stress and strain distributions in the joint to be used to as basic data in estimating the fatigue lives using multiaxial fatigue criteria. The estimated lives were compared with available experimental fatigue test results to investigate the capability of the criteria in predicting the fatigue lives. The results showed that the accuracy of life estimation for any...

    Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the application of strapping technique for retrofit of concrete compressive specimens. In this technique, standard strapping devices, which are used in the packaging industry, are applied to post-tension high strength metal strips around the concrete columns. Experimental program included axial compressive tests on 72 cylindrical and prismatic compressive specimens, which were actively confined by pre-stressed metal strips. The effects of various parameters on strength and ductility of confined concrete were studied including compressive strength of concrete, mechanical volumetric ratio of confining strips, post-tensioning force in...

    Abstract
This paper presents analytical part of an investigation on the application of prestressed strips for concrete confinement. In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to predict the compressive stress-strain curve of strapped concrete as a function of the confinement level. The model was calibrated based on the experimental data of compressive tests which were described in part A of this paper. Various parameters are considered in the proposed model including volumetric ratio, yield strength and ultimate strain of confining material, shape of cross section, strength of plain concrete. Three key points were defined on the stress-stress curve of strapped concrete columns and applied in...

    Abstract
Strengthening is often a necessary measure to overcome an unsatisfactory deficient situation or where a new code requires the structure or a member of it to be modified to achieve new requirements. In the engineering practice such restraint to lateral dilation, indicated by the name of confinement, has been traditionally provided to compression members through steel transverse reinforcement in the form of spirals, circular hoops or rectangular ties. Steel and concrete jackets are other techniques for providing additional confinement for compression members, too. This paper presents the results of experimental and analytical study on the application of strapping technique for retrofitting of...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of rocking and fixed base prestressed columns and conventional reinforced concrete columns on the response of frames are investigated. Also, the influence of some selected rocking base prestressed columns on the response of the concrete frame was studied. Three types of a concrete frame with conventional Reinforced Concrete columns, rocking, and fixed base prestressed columns were modeled using the finite element method in Opensees software. The details of the simulation of the rocking and fixed base columns in Opensees are described precisely. The results obtained from the models were compared with those of the literature to evaluate the validity of the results....
