    Abstract
Ta0.8Hf0.2C ceramic has the highest melting point among the known materials (4000 °C). However, this high melting point makes the ceramic difficult to be sintered at temperatures lower than 2300 °C, pressurelessly. The purpose of this study is to consolidate Ta 0.8Hf0.2C UHTC by pressureless sintering at 2000 °C using MoSi2 as sintering aid. In this regard, effect of different amounts of MoSi2 on sintering behavior of Ta0.8Hf 0.2 UHTC was investigated. It was observed that condensation of the UHTC after sintering at 2000 °C was enhanced by increasing MoSi2 content and the highest relative density of 95% was obtained in the presence of 24 vol.% MoSi2. XRD pattern of the sintered UHTC...

Sintering of Al2O3-SiC composite from sol-gel method with MgO, TiO2 and Y2O3 addition

    Abstract
Al2O3-SiC composite ceramics were prepared by pressureless sintering with and without the addition of MgO, TiO2 and Y2O3 as sintering aids. The effects of these compositional variables on final density and hardness were investigated. In the present article at first α-Al2O3 and β-SiC nano powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method separately by using AlCl 3, TEOS and saccharose as precursors. Pressureless sintering was carried out in nitrogen atmosphere at 1600 °C and 1630 °C. The addition of 5 vol.% SiC to Al2O3 hindered densification. In contrast, the addition of nano MgO and nano TiO2 to Al 2O3-5 vol.% SiC composites improved densification but Y2O3 did not have positive effect on...

Comprehensive study on the effect of SiC and carbon additives on the pressureless sintering and microstructural and mechanical characteristics of new ultra-high temperature ZrB2 ceramics

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 41, Issue 9, Part A , November , 2015 , Pages 11456–11463 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Khoeini, M ; Nemati, A ; Zakeri, M ; Tamizifar, M ; Samadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The combined effects of SiC and carbon additives on the densification, structure and characteristics of pressureless sintered ZrB2-SiC ceramic composites were studied. The ZrB2-SiC (1-10wt%) composite powders were mixed by 1-2wt% carbon. The prepared powder mixtures were then cold-consolidated and sintered in argon environment in the temperature range of 1800-2100°C for 2h. The constituted phases and microstructural evolutions were studied using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive x-ray detector. The obtained results concluded that the densification was increased by extending the sintering time and also by prior holding...

Pressureless sintering of ZrB 2 ceramics codoped with TiC and graphite

    , Article International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials ; Volume 81 , 2019 , Pages 189-195 ; 02634368 (ISSN) Khoeini, M ; Nemati, A ; Zakeri, M ; Shahedi Asl, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this research, the pressureless sintering of ZrB 2 composites were studied to obtain the highest densification and investigate the effects of TiC (2–10% wt) and graphite (1–2% wt) additives on the sinterability. The results showed that by adding TiC, the porosity and water absorption of the samples decreased, resulting in an increase in the density of the samples up to ~98% of the theoretical density. The addition of graphite and TiC reduced the surface oxide layers, improved the density and prevented the grain growth. The graphite additive reacted with B 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 and allowed the system to achieve a complete densification at 2000 °C. Both TiC and graphite additives were completely...

Pressureless sintering of 3Y-TZP/stainless-steel composite layers

    , Article Journal of the American Ceramic Society ; Volume 91, Issue 11 , 2008 , Pages 3493-3503 ; 00027820 (ISSN) Dourandish, M ; Simchi, A ; Tamjid Shabestary, E ; Hartwig, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A pressureless sintering method was utilized to fabricate metal/ceramic joints out of yttria-stabilized zirconia (3Y-TZP) and stainless steels (SS). Ultrafine (150 nm) and nanoscale (75 nm) 3Y-TZP particles and micrometric 17-4PH, 316L, and 420 SS (<31 μm) powders were tested. Isothermal and nonisothermal sintering behaviors of the powders and composite layers in hydrogen, argon, and vacuum atmospheres were examined. It was found that the mismatch strain between the zirconia ceramic and SS during cosintering is significant, which leads to bond cracking and joint failure. Nevertheless, interlayer diffusion of Zr, Fe, and Cr and the formation of a reaction zone, particularly during vacuum...

    Abstract
In the present article, α-Al2O3 nano powder was synthesized by a simple aqueous sol-gel method by using AlCl3 as precursor. It was shown that the gel calcined at 1000°C, 1100 °Cand 1200 °Cresulted in the formation of a crystalline ?-Al2O3 nano powder. In continue TEOS and saccharose was used to prepare SiO2 xerogels containing carbon nano particles. The conversion of the gel to β-SiC nano powders was accomplished by carbothermal reduction at 1500°Cfor 1 h in argon atmosphere. In second pace alumina matrix composites with nano particles of 5 vol% SiC were prepared with the addition of TiO 2 as sintering aid and densified by pressureless sintering method at 1600°Cand 1630°C for 2 h in nitrogen...

    Abstract
Glass-ceramic composites in the SiO2-CaO-MgO-(Na2O) system, reinforced with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% aluminum titanate were synthesized by pressureless sintering. Optimum sintering temperatures with maximum relative density were determined for each composition. The composites were fired above the crystallization peak temperature of glass-ceramic. Mechanical properties of glass-ceramic and sintered composites, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and Vickers microhardness, were investigated. The sintered composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the composite containing 10...
