Probabilistic analysis of welding residual stress on fatigue crack growth

    , Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 1 C , 2009 , Pages 195-205 ; 13198025 (ISSN) Majzoobi, G. H ; Farrahi, G. H ; Fadaee, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The qualitative effects of residual stress parameters on fatigue crack growth are investigated using Monte Carlo probabilistic analysis technique. These parameters include the maximum residual stress,σ0, half-width of the tensile residual stress region, b, and the redistribution of residual stress parameter, β. A normal distribution is assumed for all parameters considered in the investigation and fatigue life is determined using Forman equation. The results indicate that: (i) fatigue life decreases nonlinearly if the mean of random maximum residual stress and the half-width of tensile residual stress region increases; (ii) fatigue life increases nonlinearly if the rate of residual stress...

Estimation of damage induced by single-hole rock blasting: A review on analytical, numerical, and experimental solutions

    , Article Energies ; Volume 14, Issue 1 , 2021 ; 19961073 (ISSN) Shadabfar, M ; Gokdemir, C ; Zhou, M ; Kordestani, H ; Muho, E. V ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents a review of the existing models for the estimation of explosion-induced crushed and cracked zones. The control of these zones is of utmost importance in the rock explosion design, since it aims at optimizing the fragmentation and, as a result, minimizing the fine grain production and recovery cycle. Moreover, this optimization can reduce the damage beyond the set border and align the excavation plan with the geometric design. The models are categorized into three groups based on the approach, i.e., analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches, and for each group, the relevant studies are classified and presented in a comprehensive manner. More specifically, in the...

    Abstract
The substantial presence of different uncertainties in energy systems highlights the need for probabilistic analysis of operational and planning studies. Motivated by this fact, a new stochastic planning framework for energy hubs (EHs) is presented in this study based on the probability transformation concept. In the proposed framework, a measure of relative-likelihood impact is developed to estimate the importance of uncertainty sources in the studies, which, in turn, can remarkably reduce the overall complexity of stochastic problems. Step-by-step algorithm for implementation of the proposed framework on planning studies of an EH is also addressed in this study. Three different case...

Probabilistic analysis of tunability of step-edge josephson junction arrays’ inductance in hts microwave metamaterials

    Springer  2020
    Abstract
Josephson junction in superconductor circuits and metamaterials is modeled as a tunable inductance. The Josephson inductance is tunable by the bias current passing through it and can be tuned from an initial value to a very large value as much as one can push bias current near the critical current but not exceeding it. Tunability by bias current allows design of programmable metamaterials with flexible functions in microwave regime. In High-Temperature Superconductivity (HTS) tunable metamaterials, Josephson junctions should be used in series configuration to give usable tunable inductance. Each Step-Edge Josephson junction (SEJs) in HTS has a critical current that is dependent on its...

    Abstract
As a matter of course, the unprecedented ascending penetration of distributed energy resources, mainly harvesting renewable energies such as wind and solar, is concomitant with environmentally friendly concerns. This type of energy resources are innately uncertain and bring about more uncertainties in the power system context, consequently, necessitates probabilistic analysis of the system performance. Moreover, the uncertain parameters may have a considerable level of correlation to each other, in addition to their uncertainties. The two point estimation method (2PEM) is recognised as an appropriate probabilistic method. This study proposes a new methodology for probabilistic power flow...

    Abstract
To cope with the unprecedented growth of mobile data traffic, we investigate the performance gains obtained from unifying coverage-centric 4G mobile networks and capacity-centric fiber-wireless (FiWi) broadband access networks based on data-centric Ethernet technologies with resulting fiber backhaul sharing and WiFi offloading capabilities. Abstract
The reliability analysis of defective pipes, which operate under creep-fatigue loading conditions has been studied. An austenitic stainless steel pipe containing an axially external semi-elliptical surface crack, subjected to variable internal pressure at elevated temperature has been considered as the benchmark problem. Different parameters in material behavior, geometry parameters, and operational condition have been assumed as random variables in the probabilistic assessments. The reliability of the cracked pipes have been evaluated at various operation times, using different reliability methods. Sensitivity analyses have been conducted to investigate the importance measure of the random...

    Abstract
This paper revisits the phenomenon of dynamic soil-structure interaction (SSI) with a probabilistic approach. For this purpose, a twofold objective is pursued. First, the effect of SSI on inelastic response of the structure is studied considering the prevailing uncertainties. Second, the consequence of practicing SSI provisions of the current seismic design codes on the structural performance is investigated in a probabilistic framework. The soil-structure system is modeled by the sub-structure method. The uncertainty in the properties of the soil and the structure is described by random variables that are input to this model. Monte Carlo sampling analysis is employed to compute the...

    Abstract
This study presents a steady-state Markov chain model to predict the long-term probability of drought conditions. The research aims to propose a rigorous framework for statistical analysis of drought characteristics and its trends over time for a large area of aquifers and plains in Iran. For this purpose, two meteorological indicators called the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and the Groundwater Resource Index (GRI) are examined. The groundwater drought study includes more than 26,000 wells in about 600 meteorological stations over 20 years being surveyed daily. This study discusses the spatial interpolation of drought steady-state probabilities based on recorded SPI and GRI data...

    Abstract
The emerging trend of distribution generation with existing power system network leads uncertainty factor. To handle this uncertainty, it is a provocation for the power system control, planning, and operation engineers. Although there are numerous techniques to model and evaluate these uncertainties, but in this paper the integration of Copula theory with Improved Latin-hypercube Sampling (ILHS) are incorporated for Probabilistic load Flow (PLF) evaluation. In probabilistic research approaches, the dominant interest is to achieve appropriate modelling of input random variables and reduce the computational burden. To address the said problem, Copula theory is applied to execute the modelling...
