Abstract
Electric power systems are typically operated at least cost, subject to technical and reliability constraints. This paper presents a probabilistic approach for optimal and reliable scheduling of a competitive electric power market. A competitive structure is proposed which includes a power-pool with centrally optimized scheduling. Ancillary services and transmission management issues are considered in the proposed approach. The value of unit commitment risk is deduced from the generation model. The required generation model is constructed using the outage replacement rate (ORR) of units. The load forecast uncertainty is included in operational risk evaluation. This is due to the increased...
Probabilistic Methods in Graph Coloring
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbari, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Graph Theory and Combinatorial Analysis like the other branches of science use the probability for solving their problems. At the first , we will introduce the most common tools from probability used in Discrete Mathematics, such as “The Lovasz Local Lemma”. Most of them are based on Linearity of Expectation, Concentration Theorems and some other innovative methods such as Deletation Method. We will present different examples for these techniques. Also we will introduce “Random Graphs” and their importance. Specially we will explain how to use “Threshold Functions” to obtain different properties about the majority of graphs. Rainbow Connection, is a natural and interesting quantifiable way...
Effective point kinetic parameters calculation in Tehran research reactor using deterministic and probabilistic methods
, Article Nuclear Science and Techniques ; Volume 28, Issue 12 , 2017 ; 10018042 (ISSN) ; Abbaspour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The exact calculation of point kinetic parameters is very important in nuclear reactor safety assessment, and most sophisticated safety codes such as RELAP5, PARCS, DYN3D, and PARET are using these parameters in their dynamic models. These parameters include effective delayed neutron fractions as well as mean generation time. These parameters are adjoint-weighted, and adjoint flux is employed as a weighting function in their evaluation. Adjoint flux calculation is an easy task for most of deterministic codes, but its evaluation is cumbersome for Monte Carlo codes. However, in recent years, some sophisticated techniques have been proposed for Monte Carlo-based point kinetic parameters...

Abstract
A 2-hued coloring of a graph G is a coloring such that, for every vertex v∈V(G) of degree at least 2, the neighbors of v receive at least two colors. The smallest integer k such that G has a 2-hued coloring with k colors is called the 2-hued chromatic number of G, and is denoted by χ2(G). In this paper, we will show that, if G is a regular graph, then χ2(G)-χ(G)≤2log 2(α(G))+3, and, if G is a graph and δ(G)<2, then χ2(G)-χ(G)≤1+4 Δ2δ-1⌉(1+log 2Δ(G)2Δ(G)-δ(G)(α(G))), and in the general case, if G is a graph, then χ2(G)-χ(G)≤2+min α′(G),α(G)+ω(G)2

Abstract
Stray capacitance of transformer winding is an important parasitic element influencing the behavior of the switching power converters, especially for high-voltage transformers. There are various methods for calculating the stray capacitance in transformers and inductors with ordered windings. However, an ordered winding is less likely with an increased number of turns and layers. In this paper, it is shown that a slight disorderliness in winding leads to a considerable difference between the value of winding stray capacitance of the former ordered winding and its slightly disordered scheme. Therefore, regular methods for calculating the stray capacitance have significant errors in a...

Abstract
A universal labeling of a graph G is a labeling of the edge set in G such that in every orientation (Formula presented.) of G for every two adjacent vertices v and u, the sum of incoming edges of v and u in the oriented graph are different from each other. The universal labeling number of a graph G is the minimum number k such that G has universal labeling from (Formula presented.) denoted it by (Formula presented.). We have (Formula presented.), where (Formula presented.) denotes the maximum degree of G. In this work, we offer a provocative question that is: “Is there any polynomial function f such that for every graph G, (Formula presented.)?”. Towards this question, we introduce some...

Abstract
Given two arbitrary pure states |φ〉 and |ψ〉 of qubits or higher level states, we provide arguments in favor of states of the form (1/√2)(|ψ〉|φ〉 + i|φ〉|ψ〉) instead of symmetric or anti-symmetric states, as natural candidates for optimally entangled states constructed from these states. We show that such states, firstly have on the average a high value of concurrence, secondly can be constructed by a universal unitary operator independent of the input states. We also show that these states are the only ones which can be produced with perfect fidelity, by any quantum operation designed for intertwining two pure states with a relative phase. A probabilistic method is proposed for producing any...
Identification of Damage Type and Location in Reinforced Concrete Piers of Slab– Beam Bridges Using Numerical Methods
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ahmadizadeh, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Bridges are among the crucial elements of transportation networks, and play an important role in facilitating emergency relief efforts following earthquakes. For this reason, it is emparative to monitor their damages to ensure about their performace in earthquakes. The structure of a bridge is divided into two parts, namely the superstructure and substructure. Due to the relatively high rigidity and strength of superstructures, most of structural damage is usually concentrated in substructures, which may ultimately affect the overall stability of the bridge. Therefore, assessing the level of damage in the substructure is of utmost concern. This research attempts to evaluate the damage in the...
Probabilistic Approach for Multi-label Classification
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Soleymani, Mahdie (Supervisor)
Abstract
In machine learning, classification is of great importance. Unlike the traditional single-label classification in which one instance can have only one label, in multi-label classification tasks, an instance can be associated with a set of labels. Multi-label classifiers have to address many problems including: considering correlations between labels, handling large-scale datasets with many instances and a large set of labels, and having only a fraction of valid label assignments in the training set. To tackle datasets with a large set of labels, recently embedding-based methods have been proposed which seek to represent the label assignments in an intermediate space. Subsequently, given the...
Assessment of Optimal Power Flow (OPF)Uncertainty in Hybrid Wind- PV Power Systems
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotouhi Firouzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
As a matter of fact, power systems are always faced with a variety of uncertainties. These uncertainties change system parameters in an unwanted manner which may deteriorate the system security and reliability. For instance, a transmission line which is designed for a certain capacity may be suffered as a result of load increment and consequently may influence the normal operation of other network elements. In recent years, as a result of environmental considerations and especially after the oil shock at 1973 which caused the the energy prices to increase unprecedentedly, the human has taken more attention to renewable energies exploitation. Theses energies have a fluctuating nature and are...
Is there any polynomial upper bound for the universal labeling of graphs?
, Article Journal of Combinatorial Optimization ; Volume 34, Issue 3 , 2017 , Pages 760-770 ; 13826905 (ISSN) ; Dehghan, A ; Saghafian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
A universal labeling of a graph G is a labeling of the edge set in G such that in every orientation ℓ of G for every two adjacent vertices v and u, the sum of incoming edges of v and u in the oriented graph are different from each other. The universal labeling number of a graph G is the minimum number k such that G has universal labeling from { 1 , 2 , … , k} denoted it by χu→ (G). We have 2 Δ (G) - 2 ≤ χu→ (G) ≤ 2 Δ ( G ), where Δ (G) denotes the maximum degree of G. In this work, we offer a provocative question that is: “Is there any polynomial function f such that for every graph G, χu→ (G) ≤ f(Δ (G)) ?”. Towards this question, we introduce some lower and upper bounds on their parameter...
An Efficient Approach to Quantifying the Probability Distribution of Structural Responses using Endurance Time Analysis
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Esmaeil Purestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide a simply applicable method for accurately determining the distribution of seismic responses of structures based on the Endurance-Time Analysis. This distribution is one of the pillars of the probabilistic Performance-based design of structures. In general, the Incremental Dynamic Analysis provides the most accurate results in this regard. However, the enormous computational cost of this kind of analysis makes it practicality questionable. In an Endurance-Time Analysis, the structure is analyzed under a limited number of special acceleration excitations functions. These excitations functions are specifically designed to apply an incremental seismic...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Esmaeil Purestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor) ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, probability distribution of structural demand is estimated using a simplified dynamic analysis which is named Endurance Time method. In this method, the structure is subjected to nonlinear dynamic time history analysis, which its acceleration increases in time. It can be extracted the median of structural demand for earthquakes with different return periods. In customary researches, this estimation is performed using Incremental Dynamic Analysis knowns as IDA. The significant computational effort of IDA is the dominant obstacle that researchers and engineers encounter with. The main advantage of Endurance Time method is the fast estimation of structural demands by reducing...
Reliability-based Evaluation and Calibration of Load Combinations for the Design of Steel Building Structures of Iran
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor) ; Ghasemi, Hooman ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to evaluate and calibrate design load combinations of steel building structures of Iran based on the reliability theory. The importance of this research stems from recognition that the design load combinations for steel structures in Section 6 of the National Building Code of Iran have been completely adopted from the ASCE/SEI 7-10 standard, whereas the factors that affect these load combinations differ in Iran from those of the United States. Examples are the difference in the construction industry economy, lower quality of here and the differences in probability distributions for the specifications of steel. Hence, the load combinations need to be calibrated...

(Supervisor)
Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to prioritize a portfolio of buildings for seismic retrofit. A new set of sensitivity measures is proposed to rank the buildings in accordance with the reduction in the loss of the entire portfolio. To this end, various risk measures are differentiated with respect to the cost of retrofit for each building. These risk measures are the moments of the portfolio cost probability distribution which imply the risk-neutral and risk-averse decision making. Two costs are considered: Construction cost due to retrofit and repair cost due to structural and non-structural damage. To quantify the risk, reliability methods are employed in which many interacting...
Data-Driven Uncertainty Quantification and Propagation in Structural Dynamics Inverse Problems
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor) ; Katafygiotis, Lambros (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study opens up new horizons in data-driven structural identification methods offering extensive improvements over the existing time-/frequency-domain probabilistic methods. It pushes forward a holistic Bayesian statistical framework to integrate the existing formulations under a hierarchical setting aiming to quantify both the identification precision and the ensemble variability prompted due to model errors. Since the computation of the posterior distributions in hierarchical models is expensive and cumbersome, novel marginalization strategies, asymptotic approximations, and maximum a posteriori estimations are proposed offering mathematical formulations for the uncertainty...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mohtatasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Rafiee Dehkhareghani, Reza ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
Abstract
Damage detection and rehabiltation is one of the most economical methods of increasing safety and service life of the structures. In this research, a wave-based methodology is introduced for laminar damage location in single axial members and combined axial-flexural members within a structure. Laminar damage is a kind of local damage in which the cross section area of a member decreases within a specific length. In the proposed wave-based methodology, a structure with a laminar damage is analyzed using a Finite Element (FE) software under a high frequency loading, and the strain values in specific points of the structure is collected. Thereafter, using the wave propagation theories and the...

, Article IET Renewable Power Generation ; Vol. 8, issue. 6 , 2014 , p. 649-658 ; ISSN: 17521416 ; Khajeh, M. G ; Rashidinejad, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
As a matter of course, the unprecedented ascending penetration of distributed energy resources, mainly harvesting renewable energies such as wind and solar, is concomitant with environmentally friendly concerns. This type of energy resources are innately uncertain and bring about more uncertainties in the power system context, consequently, necessitates probabilistic analysis of the system performance. Moreover, the uncertain parameters may have a considerable level of correlation to each other, in addition to their uncertainties. The two point estimation method (2PEM) is recognised as an appropriate probabilistic method. This study proposes a new methodology for probabilistic power flow...
