    The optimization of chemical syntheses based on superstructure modeling is a perfect way for achieving the optimal plant design. However, the combinatorial optimization problem arising from this method is very difficult to solve, particularly for the entire plant.     Synthesis of the optimum conventional (with non-sharp separations) distillation column sequence (DCS) is a challenging problem, in the field of chemical process design and optimization, due to its huge search space and combinatorial nature.     Abstract
    SiO2-CaO-MgO glass and glass-ceramic powder doped with Nd 3+ were synthesized with sol-gel method. Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), Ca(NO3)2·4H2O, Mg(NO 3)2·6H2O, Nd(NO3) 3·6H2O, ethanol, distilled water, and HNO 3 were used as starting materials. The synthesized powder's properties were examined with simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The STA curves showed that the softening point and crystallization temperatures were shifted to higher temperatures with increasing dopant content.     Hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide alcoholic solution has been used to prepare the crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles at low temperature. Concentration ratio was used to control the pathway of sol-gel process and change the physical characteristics of TiO2 nanopowders. The crystallinity, morphology and size of aged TiO2 nanopowders were studied by X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).     Influence of hydrogen reduction on growth of tungsten oxide nanowires

    A simple method for synthesising W17O47 nanowires on tungsten oxide thin films deposited by sol-gel method on mica substrate has been reported. After thermally annealing thin films at 700 C in H2 ambient for different durations and subsequently in N2 ambient for 60 min, single-crystalline W17O47 nanowires along h0 01i direction were formed on the surface. Experimental results revealed that annealing under H2 ambient has an important effect on the growth of W17O47 nanowires.     Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was used to improve the hydrogen sensing properties of Pd and Pt-decorated TiO2 nanoparticles by facile production routes. The TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method and coupled on GO sheets via a photoreduction process. The Pd or Pt nanoparticles were decorated on the TiO2/RGO hybrid structures by chemical reduction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that GO reduction is done by the TiO2 nanoparticles and Ti-C bonds are formed between the TiO2 and the RGO sheets as well.     In this work we report a fast two-step microwave activated synthesis of the ZnS:Mn nanocrystals. Zn(NO3)2 and Na2S 2O3 were used as the precursors and Mn(NO 3)2 was employed as the source of the impurity. The aqueous synthesis was based on the heat sensitivity of Na2S 2O3, which releases some S species on heating. Consequently, the reaction was well activated under microwave irradiation resulting in formation of ZnS:Mn nanocrystals. Thioglycerol (TG) was also used as the capping agent and the catalyst of the reaction.     TiO2/multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) heterojunction arrays were synthesized and immobilized on Si(0 0 1) substrate as photocatalysts for inactivation of Escherichia coli bacteria. The vertically aligned MWNT arrays were grown on ∼5 nm Ni thin film deposited on the Si by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at 650 °C. Then, the MWNTs were coated by TiO2 using dip-coating sol-gel method. This necessitates new techniques and tools for synthesizing ESL designs and for verifying them before and after ESL synthesis.
