    Abstract
There are several critical measures in the project performance evaluation such as time, cost, and quality. In this paper, a new method for project performance evaluation is presented by combining the project Golden Triangle and the methods in decision science. At first, strategies and measures are introduced for the perspectives of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method according to their effect on time, cost, and quality. Next, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is used to weigh the measures by the judgments of experts after integrating AHP and BSC. Then, the weights of the five project phases - from the initiation to the closure - are calculated by the Technique for Order of...

Evaluating fuzzy earned value indices and estimates by applying alpha cuts

    , Article Expert Systems with Applications ; Volume 38, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 8193-8198 ; 09574174 (ISSN) Moslemi Naeni, L ; Salehipour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The earned value technique is an essential technique in analyzing and controlling the performance of a project by providing a more accurate measurement of both project performance and project progress. This paper presents an approach to deal with fuzzy earned value indices. This includes developing new indices under fuzzy circumstances and evaluating them using alpha cut method. The model improves the applicability of the earned value techniques under real-life and uncertain conditions. A small example illustrates how the new model can be implemented in reality

Monitoring project duration and cost in a construction project by applying statistical quality control charts

    , Article International Journal of Project Management ; Volume 31, Issue 3 , April , 2013 , Pages 411-423 ; 02637863 (ISSN) Aliverdi, R ; Moslemi Naeni, L ; Salehipour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The earned value is a leading technique in monitoring and analyzing project performance and project progress. Although, it allows exact measurement of project progress, and can uncover any time and cost deviations from the plan, its capability in reporting accepted level of deviation is not well studied. This study presented an approach to overcome this limitation by applying statistical quality control charts to monitor earned value indices. For this purpose, project time and cost performance indices of a real construction project were monitored regularly on individual control charts. The results were quite promising, and not only competed well against traditional approaches, but also...

Measure the Project Progress with Standard Weight Factors and Calculate the Project Performance

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yarmohammadi, Ali (Author) ; Shadrokh, Shahram (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the methods that we used today to manage project are calculating project progress. By which we can calculate the actual progress of project by comparison the actual plan with the schedule plan. If the actual progress, measured with less error, then the control of project done with high accuracy.Project progress are calculated in control account. For this reason, if the number of control account increased, the accuracy of the calculation increased and on the other hand whatever this control account increase the amount of time used to collect information also increases. In this study, we are looking to create mathematical model that in addition increases the accuracy of measurement,also...

Job site weather index: an indicator for open environment construction projects

    , Article Construction Innovation ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , 2019 , Pages 110-124 ; 14714175 (ISSN) Alvanchi, A ; Javadi Aghdam, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Emerald Group Publishing Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Purpose: Many construction projects are implemented in open-environment job sites and can be significantly affected by various weather conditions. Evaluating the overall impacts of the weather conditions on a project can assist project managers to prepare effectively. Nevertheless, methods measuring the overall adverse impacts of the job sites’ weather condition on the project performance are still missing. This study aims to address this gap. Design/methodology/approach: In this investigation, a survey-based method was proposed to evaluate the overall impacts of the weather conditions on the construction project resources through a new indicator called job site weather index (JWI). The...

In-depth investigation of project planning and control software package application in the construction industry of iran

    , Article International Journal of Engineering, Transactions A: Basics ; Volume 33, Issue 10 , 2020 , Pages 1817-1825 Alvanchi, A ; Shiri, N ; Alikhani, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Inefficient project planning and control have been identified as the main contributor to the reduced performance of the construction industry in Iran. Meanwhile, improper use of planning and control software packages (PPCSPs) in these projects can be a key factor in this reduced performance. This study investigates different aspects of the PPCSP applications to draw the role of PPCSPs in the planning and control processes of construction projects in the country using a survey-based method. It is found that only 32.5% of the construction companies in Iran highly or very highly use PPCSPs. The low level of skill and the lack of management support are two main contributing factors to this...

Exploring worker's absence pattern in the construction industry in Iran

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 28, Issue 2 , 2021 , Pages 586-597 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Alvanchi, A ; Hashemi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Workers' absence considerably a ects the performance of labor-intensive construction projects. Identifying such absence patterns assists construction project managers in preparing proper project organization, reducing the absence rate, and improving the project performance. Despite its critical role, no study has investigated the absence pattern in the construction industry in Iran. This study addresses this gap by identifying the worker's absence pattern and providing recommendations to reduce the absence rate. First, a comprehensive literature review is conducted on the impacts of in uential factors in the worker's absence. Then, a questionnaire-based survey is designed and distributed...

A novel approach on project performance monitoring and overrun probability measurement using statistical process control techniques

    , Article Proceedings, Annual Conference - Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, 14 June 2011 through 17 June 2011 ; Volume 4 , June , 2011 , Pages 2937-2946 Mobtadi, R ; Mortaheb, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The earned value management (EVM) is a tool commonly used to monitor both cost and schedule performance, based on the current status of a project. However, EVM does not consider the variation rate of project performance during project execution phase, which may oscillate, causing unexpected time and cost overruns or even project failure at the end. In this research, a methodology for monitoring project time and cost adverse variation rate, by the use of statistical process control (SPC), is introduced. This methodology improves the previous investigations in this field by considering overall required conditions and circumstances. Process capability indices of SPC, as a very powerful tool for...
