    , Article Journal of Central South University ; Vol. 21, issue. 1 , 2014 , p. 20-26 Faraji, A. H ; Bahmani, A ; Goodarzi, M ; Seyedein, S. H ; Shabani, M. O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A 2-D numerical model was developed to predict the shape of weld pool in stationary GTA welding of commercial pure aluminium, without considering fluid flow in the weld pool. A Gaussian current density and heat input distribution on the surface of the workpiece were considered. The parameters of Gaussian distribution were modified by comparing calculated results with experimental ones. It was found that these distribution parameters are functions of applied current and arc length. Effects of arc length, applied current and welding time on the geometry of the weld pool were investigated. To check the validity of the model, a series of experiments were also conducted. In general, the agreement...

    Abstract
Owing to the advantages of nanocomposites for structural applications, we present microstructural evolutions and texture development during dissimilar friction stir welding (DFSW) of an Al-matrix hybrid nanocomposite (Al-2 vol.-% Al2O3-2 vol.-% SiC) with AA1050. It is shown that DFSW can successfully be performed at a rotating speed of 1200 rev min−1 and a transverse speed of 50 mm min−1 while locating the nanocomposite at retreating side. Formation of macro-, micro-, and nano-mechanical interlocks between dissimilar base materials (BMs) as a result of FSW tool stirring action possessed an impact influence on the mechanical performance of dissimilar welds. Electron microscopy revealed...

Fabrication of aluminium matrix composites reinforced by submicrometre and nanosize Al 2O 3 via accumulative roll bonding

    Abstract
Aluminium matrix composites reinforced with submicrometre and nanosize Al 2O 3 particles were successfully manufactured in the form of sheets through eight cycles of accumulative roll bonding process. The mechanical properties of the produced composite are compared with accumulative roll bonded commercially pure aluminium. It is shown that only 1 vol.-% of submicrometre or nanosize alumina particles as reinforcement in the structure can significantly improve the yield and ultimate tensile strengths. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that particles have a random and uniform distribution in the matrix especially in the less volume fraction of alumina particles, and strong mechanical...

Plastic temperature-dependent constitutive modeling of pure aluminum diaphragms at large strains by using bulge test

    Abstract
A plastic temperature-dependent constitutive model is developed for 0.05 mm thickness pure aluminum diaphragms at large strains by using bulge test method. Rupture strain of the material is recorded below two percent according to tensile tests. In order to achieve the material behavior at larger strains, an own bulge test apparatus is used to extract equi-biaxial stress-strain curves at different temperatures, i.e. from room to 150 °C. Effective stress-strain behavior is then computed via a transformation scheme using the plastic work definition as well as the room temperature uniaxial stress-strain curve. It is illustrated that the Johnson-Cook constitutive model is not able to capture this...

Prediction of solidification behaviour of weld pool through modelling of heat transfer and fluid flow during gas tungsten arc welding of commercial pure aluminium

    Abstract
A mathematical model is developed to assess the solidification behaviour of the weld pools. To do so, during gas tungsten arc welding of commercial pure aluminium, equations of conversation of mass, energy and momentum are numerically solved considering three-dimensional steady state heat transfer and fluid flow conditions. The weld pool geometry, weld thermal cycles and various solidification parameters are calculated using temperature and velocity fields acquiring from the utilised model. The solidification behaviour of the weld pool at the weld centreline and the fusion line is then studied using the solidification parameters including temperature gradient G, solidification rate R and the...
