    Abstract
Control problem in a biological system is the problem of finding an interventional policy for changing the state of the biological system from an undesirable state, e.g. disease, into a desirable healthy state. Boolean networks are utilized as a mathematical model for gene regulatory networks. This paper provides an algorithm to solve the control problem in Boolean networks. The proposed algorithm is implemented and applied on two biological systems: T-cell receptor network and Drosophila melanogaster network. Results show that the proposed algorithm works faster in solving the control problem over these networks, while having similar accuracy, in comparison to previous exact methods. Source...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose using mobile nanosensors (MNSs) for early stage anomaly detection. For concreteness, we focus on the detection of cancer cells located in a particular region of a blood vessel. These cancer cells produce and emit special molecules, so-called biomarkers, which are symptomatic for the presence of anomaly, into the cardiovascular system. Detection of cancer biomarkers with conventional blood tests is difficult in the early stages of a cancer due to the very low concentration of the biomarkers in the samples taken. However, close to the cancer cells, the concentration of the cancer biomarkers is high. Hence, detection is possible if a sensor with the ability to detect...

Assessing the effect of wind farm layout on energy storage requirement for power fluctuation mitigation

    Abstract
Optimization of wind farm (WF) layout has been studied in the literature with the objective of maximizing the wind energy capture. Based on the power spectrum density theorem, this paper shows that the WF layout affects not only the total harvested energy but also the level of power fluctuation, which, in turn, influences required capacity of battery energy storage system (BESS) needed to mitigate the inherent power fluctuation of the WFs. Since, both harvested energy level and BESS capacity directly influence the profit of WF owner, the effect of WF layout on these quantities is taken into account simultaneously, and WF layout optimization problem is redefined. Genetic algorithm is then...

You are what you eat: Sequence analysis reveals how plant microRNAs may regulate the human genome

    , Article Computers in Biology and Medicine ; Volume 106 , 2019 , Pages 106-113 ; 00104825 (ISSN) Kashani, B ; Hasani Bidgoli, M ; Motahari, S. A ; Sedaghat, N ; Modarressi, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Background: Nutrigenomic has revolutionized our understanding of nutrition. As plants make up a noticeable part of our diet, in the present study we chose microRNAs of edible plants and investigated if they can perfectly match human genes, indicating potential regulatory functionalities. Methods: miRNAs were obtained using the PNRD database. Edible plants were separated and microRNAs in common in at least four of them entered our analysis. Using vmatchPattern, these 64 miRNAs went through four steps of refinement to improve target prediction: Alignment with the whole genome (2581 results), filtered for those in gene regions (1371 results), filtered for exon regions (66 results) and finally...
