    Abstract
Power quality has become an increasing concern to utilities and customers. The increased concern has resulted in measuring power quality variations and characteristic disturbances for different distribution companies. This paper explains the results of power quality indexes for 50 customer loads at two voltage levels 20kV and 400v. The measurement period is 7 days with 10 minutes intervals. Also this survey has been presented according to IEC61000 and Iranian Power Quality Standard (IPQS). IPQS has some differences from IEC61000, EN50160 and IEEE standards in power quality indexes, which are investigated in this paper. At the end of paper, individual and global power indicators for all...

    Abstract
High-quality measurements of seismic activities around the world provide a wealth of data and information that are relevant to understanding of when earthquakes may occur. If viewed as complex stochastic time series, such data may be analyzed by methods that provide deeper insights into their nature, hence leading to better understanding of the data and their possible implications for earthquakes. In this paper, we provide further evidence for our recent proposal for the existence of a transition in the shape of the probability density function (PDF) of the successive detrended increments of the stochastic fluctuations of Earth's vertical velocity Vz, collected by broadband stations before...

In-the-wild no-reference image quality assessment using deep convolutional neural networks

    , Article 5th Iranian Conference on Signal Processing and Intelligent Systems, ICSPIS 2019, 18 December 2019 through 19 December 2019 ; 2019 ; 9781728153506 (ISBN) Otroshi Shahreza, H ; Amini, A ; Behroozi, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
With the ever-growing portion of internet traffic associated with multimedia data and the existence of multiple copies of the same content in various forms, it has become vital to measure the quality of the image and video files. In most cases, without access to the original file, the quality shall be assessed solely based on the available file. Specifically, the challenge of no-reference image quality assessment (NR-IQA) is to predict a quality measure for given images in a consistent manner with human perception of quality. Conventional NR-IQA methods try to fit certain distortion models to a given image and quantify the quality. In practice, however, an image is affected by a combination...

Fuzzy-based analysis of process capability for assembly quality assessment in mechanical assemblies

    , Article International Journal of Production Research ; Volume 50, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 3395-3415 ; 00207543 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Process capability indices are useful tools for evaluating the ability of a process to produce products that meet certain specifications. The assembly quality is dependent on the distribution of variations of assembly dimensions, which is in turn dependent on mating conditions in the mechanical assembly. Since it is often difficult to measure the assembly dimensions in the production stages, they are not considered as a direct inspection objective. Rather, the inspection and evaluation of quality is carried out by specifying whether the assembly requirements satisfy the specified limits. Therefore, we can basethe process capability indices on the assembly dimensions. In most real life cases,...

A sparse representation-based wavelet domain speech steganography method

    , Article IEEE/ACM Transactions on Speech and Language Processing ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 80-91 ; 23299290 (ISSN) Ahani, S ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Wang, Z. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we present a novel speech steganography method using discrete wavelet transform and sparse decomposition to address the undetectability concern in speech steganography. The proposed speech steganography method exploits the sparse representation to embed secret messages into higher semantic levels of the cover signal, resulting in increased undetectability. The proposed method also yields improvements on both stego signal quality and embedding capacity, which are the two major requirements of a steganography algorithm. Our experimental results illustrate that the stego signals generated by the proposed method are perceptually indistinguishable from the original cover signals,...

LP-based over-sampled subband adaptive noise canceller for speech enhancement in diffuse noise fields

    , Article 2008 9th International Conference on Signal Processing, ICSP 2008, Beijing, 26 October 2008 through 29 October 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 157-161 ; 9781424421794 (ISBN) Khorram, S ; Sameti, H ; Veisi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
Adaptive Noise Cancellers (ANCs) do not provide sufficient noise reduction in the diffuse noise fields. In this paper, a new hybrid structure is proposed as a solution to this problem. The proposed system is a combination of two subsystems, an ANC and a new multistage post-filter. The post-filter is based on linear prediction (LP) and attempts to extract speech component by using intermediate ANC signals. The system is implemented on an over-sampled DFT filterbank with different analysis and synthesis prototype filters. The experimental results using various quality measures show that the proposed system is superior to both the subband ANC and subband LP based speech enhancement systems.1 ©...

Wavelet domain binary partition trees for image segmentation

    , Article 2008 International Workshop on Content-Based Multimedia Indexing, CBMI 2008, London, 18 June 2008 through 20 June 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 302-307 ; 9781424420445 (ISBN) Ghanbari, S ; Woods, J. C ; Rabiee, H. R ; Lucas, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
When performing segmentation using tree based representations it is evident that contiguous objects are often dispersed widely across the tree making controlled selection difficult. This paper demonstrates robust segmentation by the generation of Binary Partition Trees entirely within the wavelet domain. By using spatial frequency in conjunction with colour, a threshold free tree is produced which compels objects to reside inside single branches of the tree by constraining their merging development. Experimental results show the superior performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the existing colour based BPT algorithms. ©2008 IEEE

User assessment of traffic quality measures on freeway weaving segments

    , Article 6th International Conference on Traffic and Transportation Studies Congress 2008: Traffic and Transportation Studies Congress 2008, ICTTS 2008, Nanning, 5 August 2008 through 7 August 2008 ; Volume 322 , 2008 , Pages 827-836 ; 9780784409954 (ISBN) Dehghani Sanij, M. Abstract
According to the Highway Capacity Manual, definitions of level of service for freeways are generally in terms of such service measures as freedom to maneuver, change in free flow speed, and drivers' physical and psychological comfort. These quality measures are inherently uncertain and are highly dependent on user perceptions. However, users' perception of traffic operational conditions has not been explicitly considered in defining LOS categories. This study attempt to evaluate freeways LOS and other quality measures describing LOS, based on user perception. Therefore, twenty 1-minute video clips of a weaving freeway segment were shown to users. For each video clip, users' perceptions of...

Application of constrained multi-variable search methods for prediction of PVT properties of crude oil systems

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Vol. 363 , 15 February , 2014 , pp. 121-130 ; ISSN: 03783812 Arabloo, M ; Amooie, M. A ; Hemmati-Sarapardeh, A ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Mohammadi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Accurate prediction of the PVT properties of reservoir oil is of primary importance for improved oilfield development strategies. Experimental determination of these properties is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, new empirical models for universal reservoir oils have been developed as a function of commonly available field data. In this communication, more than 750 experimental data series were gathered from different geographical locations worldwide. Successive linear programming and generalized reduced gradient algorithm as two constrained multivariable search methods were incorporated for modeling and expediting the process of achieving a good feasible solution. Moreover,...

    , Article IET Control Theory and Applications ; Volume 6, Issue 5 , 2012 , Pages 651-661 ; 17518644 (ISSN) Afshar, P ; Nobakhti, A ; Wang, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This study proposes a multi-objective control algorithm for simultaneous process and quality control in non-Gaussian stochastic batch processes. The objective is to control a non-Gaussian process so that each batch is delivered within a pre-specified time. During each batch, the process is controlled by a fixed-parameter PI controller. Between any two adjacent batches the controller parameters are updated by a differential evolution algorithm so that the integral squared of tracking error, entropy of tracking error, integral of absolute processing time error and entropy of processing time error are minimised. the proposed algorithm is applied to a batch continuously stirred tank reactor...

    Abstract
Aerosol measurement is used in a variety of fields such as nanotechnology, materials science, pollution monitoring, air quality measurements, combustion and engine exhaust analysis, inhalation toxicology, and medical studies. One of the most prevalent methods for aerosol measurement is to use electrical mobility. An electrical mobility spectrometer (EMS) is used to measure aerosol particles size distribution ranging from 10-1000 nanometers, under the influence of an electric field. The accuracy of this distribution is influenced by flow conditions, the geometry of the EMS, the electric field, and the number of electrode rings. In this work, a multi-channel EMS is studied using computational...

    Abstract
Adaptive Noise Cancellation (ANC) is a well-known technique for background noise reduction in automobile and vehicular environments. The noise fields in automobile and other vehicle interior obey the diffuse noise field model closely. On the other hand, the ANC does not provide sufficient noise reduction in the diffuse noise fields. In this paper, a new multistage post-filter is designed for ANC as a solution to diffuse noise conditions. The designed post-filter is a single channel Linear Prediction (LP) based speech enhancement system. The LP is performed by an adaptive lattice filter and attempts to extract speech components by using intermediate ANC signals. The post-filter has no...

The modeling and process analysis of resistance spot welding on galvanized steel sheets used in car body manufacturing

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 34 , February , 2012 , Pages 759-767 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Hamidinejad, S. M ; Kolahan, F ; Kokabi, A. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the resistance spot welding (RSW) process of the galvanized interstitial free (IF) steel sheets and galvanized bake hardenable (BH) steel sheets, used in the manufacturing of car bodies, has been modeled and optimized. The quality measure of a resistance spot welding joint is estimated from the tensile-shear strength. Furthermore, four important process parameters, namely welding current (WC), welding time (WT), electrode force (EF), and holding time (HT) are considered as the factors influencing the quality of the joints. In order to develop an accurate relationship between the process inputs (4-component vectors) and the response output (tensile-shears strength) at first a...
