    Abstract
The depth of anaesthesia estimation has been of a great interest in recent decades. In this paper we present a new methodology to quantify the depth of anaesthesia by quantifying the power-law correlations of the EEG signal. Extraction of useful information about the nonlinear dynamics of the brain during anaesthesia has been proposed with the optimum fractal scaling exponent. This optimum solution is based on the best domain of box sizes in the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) algorithm which have meaningful changes at different depth of anaesthesia. The experimental results confirm that our new algorithm on the raw EEG data can clearly discriminate between aware to moderate and deep...

Investigation of Reaction Times and Maneuver for Bus Drivers Based on Road and Drivers Characteristics Using Driving Simulator

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yahyazadeh, Ehsan (Author) ; Vaziri, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most prominent issues in road safety is to observe reaction time and sight distance in geometric design. Various sight distances are available is Iran's specifications on "Geometric Design of Roadways" taken from the AASHTO standard from which stopping sight distance, decision sight distance and their corresponding car driver reaction times are noteworthy. This research puts effort in obtaining these values for bus drivers in Iran. To achieve this, a test designed using bus driving simulator apparatus, developed in K.N.Toosi University of Technology, was conducted on a number of bus drivers. Obtained results of driver behavior were then analyzed and compared to corresponding...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Faraji, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Rezaei, Saeed (Supervisor) ; Hassanzadeh, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
English language is peppered with phrasal verbs (PhVs) and native speakers use them frequently and endlessly in daily life. However, due to various semantic and syntactic difficulties, polysemy, unpredictability, and learners’ L1 differences, this omnipresent aspect of English language morphology poses formidable challenges for learners in terms of fluency and accuracy, and leads them to resort to avoidance strategies. The problem has also been exacerbated with the arbitrariness of PhVs’ teaching methods prescribed by various textbooks. In order to shed more light on the ongoing debate over implicit and explicit types of instruction as two viable approaches to tackling PhVs, this study aimed...

    Abstract
Storing information from incoming stimuli in working memory (WM) is essential for decision-making. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a key role to support this process. Previous studies have characterized different neuronal populations in the PFC for working memory judgements based on whether an originally presented stimulus matches a subsequently presented one (matching-rule decision-making). However, much remains to be understood about this mechanism at the population level of PFC neurons. Here, we hypothesized differences in processing of feature vs. spatial WM within the PFC during a matching-rule decision-making task. To test this hypothesis, the modulation of neural activity within the...

Spike phase synchronization in delayed-coupled neural networks: Uniform vs. non-uniform transmission delay

    , Article Chaos ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2013 ; 10541500 (ISSN) Jalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, we investigated phase synchronization in delayed dynamical networks. Non-identical spiking Hindmarsh-Rose neurons were considered as individual dynamical systems and coupled through a number of network structures such as scale-free, Erdos-Rényi, and modular. The individual neurons were coupled through excitatory chemical synapses with uniform or distributed time delays. The profile of spike phase synchrony was different when the delay was uniform across the edges as compared to the case when it was distributed, i.e., different delays for the edges. When an identical transmission delay was considered, a quasi-periodic pattern was observed in the spike phase synchrony. There...

    Abstract
In this work, a novel heterogeneous organocatalyst was synthesized by immobilization of hydroxide ions on the modified salep as a natural polymer. Because of the grafting of ionic polymer chains onto the salep backbone, catalyst has high loading level of hydroxide ions (3.01 mmol/g). The resulting catalyst shows excellent activity in the synthesis of 4H-benzo[b]pyrans in water at room temperature in short reaction times. The present catalyst and protocol represent a simple, ecologically safe and cost-effective route to synthesize 4H-benzo[b]pyrans with high product yield, as well as easy catalyst recycling
