A Bayesian approach to the data description problem

    , Article Proceedings of the National Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 22 July 2012 through 26 July 2012 ; Volume 2 , July , 2012 , Pages 907-913 ; 9781577355687 (ISBN) Ghasemi, A ; Rabiee, H. R ; Manzuri, M. T ; Rohban, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we address the problem of data description using a Bayesian framework. The goal of data description is to draw a boundary around objects of a certain class of interest to discriminate that class from the rest of the feature space. Data description is also known as one-class learning and has a wide range of applications. The proposed approach uses a Bayesian framework to precisely compute the class boundary and therefore can utilize domain information in form of prior knowledge in the framework. It can also operate in the kernel space and therefore recognize arbitrary boundary shapes. Moreover, the proposed method can utilize unlabeled data in order to improve accuracy of...

Active constrained fuzzy clustering: A multiple kernels learning approach

    , Article Pattern Recognition ; Volume 48, Issue 3 , March , 2015 , Pages 953-967 ; 00313203 (ISSN) Abin, A. A ; Beigy, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we address the problem of constrained clustering along with active selection of clustering constraints in a unified framework. To this aim, we extend the improved possibilistic c-Means algorithm (IPCM) with multiple kernels learning setting under supervision of side information. By incorporating multiple kernels, the limitation of improved possibilistic c-means to spherical clusters is addressed by mapping non-linear separable data to appropriate feature space. The proposed method is immune to inefficient kernels or irrelevant features by automatically adjusting the weight of kernels. Moreover, extending IPCM to incorporate constraints, its strong robustness and fast...

A novel density-based fuzzy clustering algorithm for low dimensional feature space

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel density-based fuzzy clustering algorithm based on Active Learning Method (ALM), which is a methodology of soft computing inspired by some hypotheses claiming that human brain interprets information in pattern-like images rather than numerical quantities. The proposed clustering algorithm, Fuzzy Unsupervised Active Learning Method (FUALM), is performed in two main phases. First, each data point spreads in the feature space just like an ink drop that spreads on a sheet of paper. As a result of this process, densely connected ink patterns are formed that represent clusters. In the second phase, a fuzzifying process is applied in order to summarize the effects...

    Abstract
Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) has become a topic of recent research that effectively addresses the problem of limited labeled data. Many SSL methods have been developed based on the manifold assumption, among them, the Local and Global Consistency (LGC) is a popular method. The problem with most of these algorithms, and in particular with LGC, is the fact that their naive implementations do not scale well to the size of data. Time and memory limitations are the major problems faced in large-scale problems. In this paper, we provide theoretical bounds on gradient descent, and to overcome the aforementioned problems, a new approximate Newton's method is proposed. Moreover, convergence...

Recurrent poisson factorization for temporal recommendation

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering ; 2018 ; 10414347 (ISSN) Hosseini, S ; Khodadadi, A ; Alizadeh, K ; Arabzadeh, A ; Farajtabar, M ; Zha, H ; Rabiee, H. R. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Poisson Factorization (PF) is the gold standard framework for recommendation systems with implicit feedback whose variants show state-of-the-art performance on real-world recommendation tasks. However, most of the previous work do not explicitly take into account the temporal behavior of users which is essential to recommend the right item to the right user at the right time. In this paper, we introduce a Recurrent Poisson Factorization (RPF) framework that generalizes the classical PF methods by utilizing a Poisson process for modeling the implicit feedback. RPF treats time as a natural constituent of the model, and takes important factors for recommendation into consideration to provide a...

    Abstract
Recommendation plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives. Recommender systems automatically suggest items to users that might be interesting for them. Recent studies illustrate that incorporating social trust in Matrix Factorization methods demonstrably improves accuracy of rating prediction. Such approaches mainly use the trust scores explicitly expressed by users. However, it is often challenging to have users provide explicit trust scores of each other. There exist quite a few works, which propose Trust Metrics to compute and predict trust scores between users based on their interactions. In this paper, first we present how social relation can be extracted from users'...
