    Abstract
A new method for structural optimization is presented for successive approximation of the objective function and constraints in conjunction with Lagrange multipliers approach. The focus is on presenting the methodology with simple examples. The basis of the iterative algorithm is that after each iteration, it brings the approximate location of the estimated minimum closer to the exact location, gradually. In other words, instead of the linear or parabolic term used in Taylor expansion, which works based on a short step length, an arch is used that has a constant curvature but a longer step length. Using this approximation, the equations of optimization involve the Lagrange multipliers as the...

A robust wavelet-based approach to fingerprint indentification

    , Article Proceedings of the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo Workshops, ICMEW 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 413-417 ; 9780769547299 (ISBN) Omidyeganeh, M ; Javadtalab, A ; Ghaemmaghami, S ; Shirmohammadi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE  2012
    Abstract
A robust fingerprint recognition system based on marginal statistics of 2D wavelet transform is introduced which significantly improves the accuracy of previous wavelet based approaches due to 1) a better selection of features extracted from the wavelet transform, and 2) a more accurate distance measure to find the similarity between fingerprints. A combination of Jain and Poincare algorithms is employed to locate the fingerprint reference point. The main part of the fingerprint image is chosen as a rectangle with the reference point at its center. The image is then divided into nonoverlapping sub-images, the wavelet transform is applied to the bi-level sub-images, and Generalized Gaussian...

Concept of best energy transfer scenario and a true expression for power factor

, Article IEEE Power and Energy Society 2008 General Meeting: Conversion and Delivery of Electrical Energy in the 21st Century, PES, Pittsburgh, PA, 20 July 2008 through 24 July 2008 ; 2008 ; 9781424419067 (ISBN) Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Khajehoddin, S. Abstract
The best energy transfer scenario (BETS) is a situation under which the optimum transfer of power (or energy) from the electric utility to an electric power consumer is achieved. Such a scenario is important because it is used as a reference point to evaluate how efficient the load operates. The index of power factor (PF) is used to quantify such an efficiency. The closer the PF to unity corresponds to more efficient performance of the load. This paper is to show that the conventional definition of the BETS is inadequate and results in an unfair value for the PF unless the transmission line is perfect and lossless (which is an unrealistic condition). The paper also investigates an...

SME: Learning automata-based algorithm for estimating the mobility model of soccer players

    , Article 6th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Informatics, ICCI 2007, Lake Tahoe, CA, 6 August 2007 through 8 August 2007 ; October , 2007 , Pages 462-469 ; 1424413273 (ISBN); 9781424413270 (ISBN) Jamalian, A. Abstract
Soccer model and relation of players and coach has been analyzed by a learning automata-based method, called Soccer Mobility Estimator (SME), who estimates the mobility model of soccer players. During a soccer match, players play according to a certain program designed by coach. The pattern of players' mobility is not stochastic and it can be assumed that they are playing with a certain mobility model. Since knowledge about mobility model of nodes in mobile ad-hoc networks has a substantial effect on its performance evaluation, knowledge about mobility model of soccer players can be useful for coaches and experts for game analysis. In fact the mobility model of players could be an important...

Prediction of absolute entropy of ideal gas at 298 K of pure chemicals through GAMLR and FFNN

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 52, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 630-634 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Fazeli, A ; Bagheri, M ; Ghaniyari-Benis, S ; Aslebagh, R ; Kamaloo, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Thermodynamical optimization for energy conversion system can be performed by decreasing entropy generation. For calculation of entropy, we need to know entropy of ideal gases at 298 K as a reference point. Entropy is a thermodynamic quantity which is not easily measured and prediction of entropy by molecular structures for new designed molecules may be a challenge. An easy and accurate equation for prediction of absolute entropy of pure ideal gas at 298 K was introduced for the first time based on the quantitative structure property relationship (QSPR) approach. Thousand seven hundred pure chemical compounds and 3224 molecular descriptors were used for finding this easy equation by genetic...
