    Abstract
An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based helicopter identification system is proposed. All helicopters emit certain characteristic acoustic signatures, which are specific to them. This is due to some differences in their structures and design. These differences in acoustic signatures can be used with neural networks for detection and classification of different types of helicopters. The conventional system uses the ratio of the main-rotor blade passage frequency (bpf) to the tail-rotor bpf. The ANN is trained to use similar main/tail-rotor information, in addition to the parametric spectral representation technique (Reflection Coefficients). It is also shown that the classifier performance...

Effective Methods for Improving the Quality of THz Spectroscopy

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirsalehi, Mitra (Author) ; Kavehvash, Zahra (Supervisor) ; Fardmanesh, Mehdi (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has recently attracted great interest due to the special characteristics of THz waves, such as their capability of penetrating and passing through many non-polar materials, non-ionizing atoms and especially human tissues, and less scattering compared to optical waves and X rays. Also, polar molecules of some dielectric materials have vibrational or circular oscillations that create peaks in their spectral characteristics. This can be used to identify materials by spectroscopy. In this thesis, a simple THz spectroscopy system is introduced and modeled for detecting the C-4 material. First, a wideband Vivaldi antenna is designed and simulated for the frequency...

    , Article Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Vol. 32, Issue. 6 , 2014 , Pages 1168-1176 ; ISSN: 07338724 Torabi, A ; Shishegar, A. A ; Faraji Dana, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel method for computation of guided mode reflectivity from optical waveguide end-facet is presented. The method is based on the characteristic Green's function (CGF) technique formulation combined with the complex images (CIs) method for dielectric planar waveguides. By separability assumption of the structure, a uniform and closed-form expression of spatial Green's function is obtained. Derived expression consists of discrete and continuous spectrum contributions which denote guided and radiation modes effects, respectively. Having a full-wave solution, efficient optimization procedure is then used to calculate the exact reflection coefficients of guided modes at the end-facets. To...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nekuee, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Akbari, Mahmood (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The colloidal crystals are formed of spherical particles and can be fabricated using simple and low-cost chemical methods. Optical properties of colloidal crystals should be recognized properly in order to design optical devices based on these nano-structures. Reflection and transmission coefficients of these multilayer structures are very important for understanding their properties. Semi-analytical methods like Fourier Modal method (FMM) can be very useful to obtain their reflection and transmission properties of these multilayer structures. In this thesis, we try to implement Matched Coordinate (MC) and Adaptive Spatial Resolution (ASR) techniques in the FMM. These techniques increase...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Baneshi, Abdolkarim (Author) ; Movahedian Attar, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Production logging consists of running measurement instruments called logging tools into an oil or gas well to measure various parameters such as temperature, flow velocity, pressure, density, etc. The primary purpose for production logging is to allow enhancing production profits and decreasing costs. Nowadays the common way for fluid density measurement as a part of these tools depends on radioactive source. Special considerations must be taken upon the use of this principle due to its radioactive character. This thesis is focused on a non-radioactive method of determining density. The subject of this thesis is to consider methods for measuring density based on principle of acoustic...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hashemi Abrandabadi, Saeed (Author) ; Sadighi Bonabi, Rasoul (Supervisor) ; Anvari, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Structures that change color in an adjustable way have been noticed in recent years. There are structures in nature such as the skin of chameleons and octopuses and other animals that can change color. In recent years, inspired by these structures, materials based on photonic crystals or surface plasmonics have been proposed to change color. In this research, a review is made on these structures in nature as well as recent efforts to make such materials. In fact, photonic crystals create a special color due to the interference between scattered waves. For example, the change in the distance between the nanoparticles in the photonic crystals inside the chameleon skin is the cause of its color...

    Abstract
Nowadays, wireless communication plays a key role in everyday lives and has many different applications. Today’s communication systems require high bandwidths in order to transfer data with higher bitrates. Among these, modeling a wireless channel is one of the most important challenges in wireless communications. Modeling an indoor Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) wireless channel has been involved in a great number of researches. In order to model a UWB channel, we need to correctly investigate electromagnetic waves inside the buildings. Amongst different methods that are used for this aim, ray tracing method is one of the most accurate and fast ones. In this thesis, time-domain reflection and...

    Abstract
This paper presents a tunable reflection/transmission coefficient (TRTC) circuit based on a 45° hybrid coupler that is potentially useful for leakage cancelation purposes. The analysis of the proposed TRTC circuit shows that the circuit can cover any reflection/transmission coefficient of less than 0.5 on the Smith chart by adjusting only two variable resistors. Meanwhile, the real and imaginary parts of the reflection/transmission coefficient can be tuned independently, facilitating the use of this circuit in feedback systems. To implement the 45° hybrid coupler used in the proposed TRTC circuit, a new wideband planar topology for arbitrary phase and amplitude hybrid coupler is introduced....

    Abstract
A novel method for computation of modal reflectivity at optical waveguide end-facet is presented. The method is based on the characteristic Green's function (CGF) technique. The uniform derived expression consists of discrete and continuous spectrum contributions which denotes guided and radiation modes effects respectively. An optimization problem is then defined to calculate the exact reflection coefficients at the end-facet for all extracted poles obtained from rational function fitting step. The proposed CGF-RFFM-optimization...

    , Article Optics Letters ; Volume 35, Issue 2 , 2010 , Pages 115-117 ; 01469592 (ISSN) Miri, M ; Khavasi, A ; Mehrany, K ; Rashidian, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The transmission-line analogy of the planar electromagnetic reflection problem is exploited to obtain a transmission-line model that can be used to design effective, robust, and wideband interference-based matching stages. The proposed model based on a new definition for a scalar impedance is obtained by using the reflection coefficient of the zeroth-order diffracted plane wave outside the photonic crystal. It is shown to be accurate for in-band applications, where the normalized frequency is low enough to ensure that the zeroth-order diffracted plane wave is the most important factor in determining the overall reflection. The frequency limitation of employing the proposed approach is...

    Abstract
Properly terminating a transmission line, in order to transfer the maximum available power to the load, is an important issue. The problem, fully analyzed in linear lines, is still considered as a persisting problem in the area of nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs). In this paper, an accurate analysis is presented which gives a closed-form formula for the matching efficiency of the NLTLs. Using this analysis, optimal resistive terminating load for the NLTLs was extracted. These results will considerably ease the design of all kinds of the NLTL-based systems, such as high-frequency oscillators and ultrashort pulse generators. This consistent analysis also gives the reflection coefficient...

    Abstract
A novel UWB MIMO antenna with band-notched characteristic operating in the frequency range between 3.1 GHz and 10.6 GHz is presented. The designed MIMO antenna has two ports and the size of 32×14 mm2 which is fabricated on an FR-4 printed-circuit-board. The feeding system of the proposed antenna is a microstrip line. The two antennas are positioned face to face but laid reversely upon the substrate in order to have a good isolation, less cross polarization, high gain and good envelope correlation coefficient. S-parameters describe the input-output relationship between ports (or terminals) in a MIMO antenna. The effects of the strip feed line width on the variations in reflection coefficient...

    , Article Optics Communications ; Volume 282, Issue 12 , 2009 , Pages 2451-2456 ; 00304018 (ISSN) Bahrampour, A. R ; Zakeri, S ; Mirzaee, M. A ; Ghaderi, Z ; Farman, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The electric field of the modes of semiconductor microring lasers (SMRLs) in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are linear combinations of the clock wise (CW) and the counter clock wise (CCW) electric fields. The mode structures can be controlled by the waveguide reflection coefficients. The power ratio and phase difference of the CW and CCW fields of one mode is proportional to the ratio of the reflection coefficients of the left and right waveguides. It is shown that the degenerate CW and CCW modes in the presence of bus waveguide reflections are split into two modes with different frequencies. Employing these new modes, SMRL can be used as an element to design flip-flops used in...
