    Abstract
This paper presents a new method to determine the optimal number and locations of autorecloser and sectionalizer switches (AR/S) in distribution networks. The costs of AR/S investment, switch maintenance, and undistributed energy as well as reliability coefficients are considered in the objective function. Reliability parameters such as SAIFI, SADI, MAIFI, and ENS are evaluated in the case study system. As a new method, the weights of the reliability parameters are obtained by decision-makers using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The optimal size, type, and location of automatic switches are determined by minimizing the objective function using the particle swarm optimization (PSO)...

    Abstract
In power distribution systems, sometimes, system reliability indices are available, where some components' reliability parameters are unknown. This letter presents the inverse reliability evaluation (IRE) problem in radial distribution systems to find unknown components' parameters from the known system reliability indices. To this end, a nonlinear system of equations is presented and solved. The solutions are analyzed in the RBTS bus 2 to verify the applicability of the proposed approach and to show the importance of the IRE problem. © 1969-2012 IEEE

Reliability modeling of PMUs using fuzzy sets

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 25, issue. 4 , 2010 , p. 2384-2391 ; ISSN: 8858977 Aminifar, F ; Bagheri-Shouraki, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Probabilistic analyses of a wide-area measurement system (WAMS) would require equivalent reliability models for its components which include phasor measurement units (PMUs). In this paper, the reliability modeling of PMU is proposed and the proposed model is extended to consider options for the PMU hardware. The Markov process is employed to analyze the proposed model and to present an equivalent two-state model of PMUs. Reliability parameters of PMU are estimated with major difficulties associated with limited and uncertain data. In this paper, uncertainties are taken into account to achieve more realistic estimates of PMU characteristics. Fuzzy sets along with reliability analyses and...

Optimal Placement of Automatic Switching Equipment in Radial Distribution Networks Based on Protective Coordination

    Abstract
Automatic switching equipment and protection devices (AS/PDs) play a fundamental role in radial power distribution networks. In this paper, a new hybrid method is presented to determine the optimal number, types, and locations of AS/PDs based on protective coordination. When a short circuit fault occurs in a medium voltage distribution network (MV feeder), AS/PDs such as relays, fuses, auto-reclosers and sectionalizers can be employed to disconnect the faulty part from the healthy area. The use of automatic switches at proper locations can significantly decrease system interruptions. The costs of investment, maintenance, and unsupplied energy are considered in the cost function. This...
