Operation Planning in Restructured Power System Integrating Wind /Solar Energy

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Siahkali, Hassan (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In power system operation, the term "operation planning" carries a wide range of meaning. For some utilities, operation planning denotes primarily short-term planning tasks (up to several days), such as load forecasting, unit commitment, hydro-thermal coordination, transaction pricing, fuel allocation, and security analysis while for other companies operational planning is interpreted in a wider context, and include mid-term planning activities (up to several months), such as maintenance planning, fuel budgeting, rate forecasting, network planning, relay coordination, etc. The mid-term planning provides the link between the long-term and short-term planning programs. The duration of this...

Linked Planning of Power Grids and Subsidy Policies on Using Photovoltaic Cells for Residential Electricity Supply

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Balmaki, Saeed (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, due to restructuring in the electric power industry, distributed generation has become one of the most important subjects and DGs and renewable energy sources have been increasingly expected as a supplement and an alternative to a conventional large scale central power system. their success depends not only on the distribution of the available renewable energy sources in a region but also on the power grids connectable capacity in the area. Photovoltaic system is one of the best RESs for residential electricity supply because it is noiseless and solar power is widely available and households can use it via photovoltaic cells in their homes. There are two major problems...

Calculation and Distribution of Transmission Loss in Restructured Power Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Bojdani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Ehsan, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The electric power industry is experiencing important changes brought about by the deregulation. Electric power generators and users engage in power transactions which take place over the transmission system and create losses. Transmission losses represent up to 1⎯5% of the total generation, and cost millions of dollars per year. Consequently, the problem of “who should pay for losses” arises and the satisfactory sharing of the transmission system utilization costs among all market participants has become a key issue. Unfortunately, losses are expressed as a nonlinear function of line flows, and it becomes almost impossible to calculate exactly the losses that are incurred by each generator,...

Transmission Expansion Planning in Deregulated Environments

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Maghouli, Pouria (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Oloomi Buygi, Majid (Co-Advisor) ; Shahidehpour, Mohamad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
This study presents a multi-objective optimization framework for transmission expansion planning in restructured electricity markets under uncertainty considerations. Deregulation of power system has introduced new objectives and requirements for transmission expansion planning problem. Also, the unbundling of electricity industry introduced new uncertainties and escalated the existing ones in network planning. Under these circumstances there is an emerging need for new planning models to cope with restructured electricity industry requirements. The conventional least-cost approaches which represent the transmission expansion planning as a single objective optimization problem could not...
